saw him grab 33 boards past his prime as a rocket the other day on classic, while also dishing out some nice assists, and was struck by what a smart player he was, at least at that point in his career.

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

def smart but id say too flawed for these purposes

these all seem to fall into a few archetypes, like dudes who trash talk you to get you all shook and not playing right or like guys who like duncan or mj who hold the ball on the wing and wait for you to shit yourself before they hit a bank shot or like point guards who just completely run the offense.

Clay, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

i knew this moment was coming and i have to go ahead and disagree - kobe has never found the personal aggression / team involvement balance that epitomizes the mastermind experience

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I don't agree fully, thus the parenthetical. Half the time he outplays himself psychologically. But the nights when he's on he's as dominant as they've ever come he gets in that psyche-you-out zone and that has to count for something.

Clay, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

yah i think youve got to be consistent to be a mastermind

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

o that's true

Clay, Thursday, 25 December 2008 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of these dudes outplayed the competition physically too (I mean Magic and Bird didn't grab rebounds and get assists with their MINDS). Anyway two nominations for defensive psychout artists:

Dennis Rodman
Bruce Bowen (much as I hate to admit it)

yah obv youve got to have physical skills to get anywhere near the nba - point is when paired w/a dominant mind things get nuts

bowen is sadly somewhat otm - tho i discount him cause his technique is at least somewhat reliant on the threat of injury - it is admittedly some sort of magical psych out that he hasnt been thrown out of the nba

Reggie Miller

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 December 2008 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

yeah obv mj had amazing talent but it was his brane that lifted him above the dominiques and gervins of the world

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

and while i would argue that bird DID get rebounds and assists with his mind and that he wasn't particularly notable speed strength or leaping wise, his hand-eye coordination was 2nd to none

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

i mean i don't know about y'all but there's been tons of times i've played with dudes who are far superior to me physically but have no clue how to play the game and i'm able to get boards/assts/even blocks on them

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

not masterminds: Tracy McGrady, Clyde Drexler.
