andrew bynum-led lakers shock the suns, tyrus thomas/big ben era begins in chicago, shaq breaks his leg. tune in tonight.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

this is going to be a really really fun season, I can feel it.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

the bulls look good, the heat look old.

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

yeah this second period is B A N A N A S

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

damn if the suns dont look kinda unbeatable right now

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

Damn if that didn't change REAL quick.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah no shit. clap clap clapclapclap ANdrew BYnum!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

Bynum has had a really good pre-season. I wouldn't be shocked if he's the real deal, but I haven't seen him play. He's gotta have better hands than Kwame Brown anyway.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

He has a real shy retiring physical presence at the start of every play, but then he gets a notion and moves around a little and suddenly it's all like BLAM.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

that retiring presence is him figuring out which of his ten post moves he's going to bust out. i kept thinking "let's wait until he's going against a real center", but diaw and thomas and amare are as real as whatever most teams are throwing out there.

look a few years into the future and see jordan farmar and andrew bynum picking up two or three rings with old man kobe and old man lamar. you'll be able to say you saw it coming!

dan (dan), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

He has TEN post moves?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

watch tonight. he'll be tested by savvy veterans adonal foyle and troy murphy.

dan (dan), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, whom did you just call "savvy veterans"??

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 2 November 2006 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, so Milwaukee goes into Detroit and whips that ass, and then Portland comes back from a nine-point deficit to beat the Supes in Seattle? And I got to watch both games because of the free week of NBA League Pass? HOOPS HEAVEN GOD DAMNIT I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 2 November 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

Haha and RONNIE TURIAF goes nuts last night (against the Warriors, but still)!?!?! What happened to my Lakers?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Lamar Odom believes this is the true face of Jesus:

jesus horatio alvarez christ, dwight howard is becoming a BEAST. brian hill is a genius for devising the complicated offense of "flash howard to the high post, then have him break towards the hoop and lob it to him".

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

bynum is looking shockingly good! and surprisingly i don't hate him. i rather like some of the new lakers- maurice evans in particular seems like he'll work his ass off instead of just kobe-watching.

my clips pulled off a squeaker against the nugs last night. they still look rusty, but doug collins actually made a good point about how they spent most of the preseason in russia instead of, you know, practicing. so 40% from the field is not surprising.

it was nice to see tim thomas finally bring out the hot hand from three. through the first game and a half all i saw was him front-rimming threes.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

also melo can suck it. i think he might get ejected 19 times this season under the rasheed rules.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Mo Evans is awesome and I can't believe the Lakers got him from Detroit for basically nothing. That dude has some serious leaping ability, he can hit an occasional outside jumper and will get after it on D. Fun guy to watch. With him and Turiaf (who can't pull for a guy who comes back from heart surgery), it's getting harder to hate the Lakers.

Not impossible, but harder.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

Utahns are undefeated and the Mavs are pitching an 0-fer. WHOOPS.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

the mavericks wait for nelly to come to town, hang their western champs banner, then lose to the warriors. beautiful.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

lil breezy oberto goes for 22 and 10, going 11-for-11, supplants ginobili as most cost effective argentinian on the spurs

ps - suns are 1-4, what is happening to fun and gun?

Dionne Warrick Dunn football psychic hotline (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 9 November 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

it was amazing how oberto was found all alone in that same spot under the hoop that many times.

5 games in---too early to make any judgments. they have had big leads in nearly every game they lost, which i suppose can be seen as a positive and negative.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Thursday, 9 November 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

woo clips!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 9 November 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

so far every time i leave a game to watch or do something else the clips put the burners on and take a lead. as soon as i start watching full games they'll go 0-77 the rest of the way

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 9 November 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

also, the truest thing bill simmons ever wrote is that doc rivers might really be the worst coach in history, even if boston won tonight

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 9 November 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

oberto was pretty amazing. not bad for a 55 year old rookie

manu can suck it, i hope raja punches him the face next time the suns and spurs meet

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 9 November 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I know shinola about basketball, but can anyone watching the Knicks this year claim that Zeke isn't the worst coach of all time ever? (Eat a duck, Bill.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 9 November 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Bodog had the over/under on Mavs wins at 57.5 - I was so close to taking the under for $200. sigh

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I think that Ike will get more wins out of the Knicks this year than Brown got out of them last year, so in that respect, no.

He is easily the worst GM of all time though. Scott Layden and Babcock are not in the same league.

i'm gonna have to call bullshit on that one.

Did someone trick Zach Randolph into thinking this is a contract year?

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Sunday, 12 November 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

OK, so someone needs to, like, COACH the Knicks. Or maybe just brainwash them into, like, RUNNING A PLAY that isn't a one-and-done pass/shot or one-on-five how-to-lose-the-ball exhibition.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 November 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

no, all that can wait til at least after this year. (bulls are getting their 1st pick next draft)

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

Who is more poorly coached: the Knicks or the Raiders.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Raiders defense seems decent at least. I don't think the Knicks have anything going for them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the Suns' D has improved (tho they're in a LOT of close games, from what I recall), & while they aren't as ZOMG explosive as they once were (what w/ Q & Joe Johnson getting all stupid for other folks), they're a much more cohesive team (yay bullshit generalizations) - there's no Walter McCarty walking through those doors any time soon.

It'd be nice for them to get Kurt Thomas back, tho. & while I'm not sure if there's any actual proof of their reliance on the starting five (specifically Nash & Marion) hurting them towards the latter stages of the playoffs, it wouldn't hurt for them to ease off the playing time a smidge whenever possible.

x-post abt Ginobili

Numbers lieee, dude can be a terrible decision maker sometimes and his face first driving-to-the-hoop style is scary to watch (course, he's always played like that, but now he expects to draw a foul everytime his hands go above his shoulders and he's not getting the calls he once did). He's come on stronger lately, though, but once every 4 or 5 games he shoots terribly or turns the ball over a ton and ends up being a liability. I guess it's worth it for the 3 or 4 games where he plays well and his defense and rebounding are consistent, but it's hard to predict how he's gonna play with the ball in his hands.

LL cool ranch (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

WHAT IN THE DING DONG is with my re-submitted posts emerging like deformed babies from the womb of Cthulhu (sic)?

Also (to go back to an old topic), if Kobe actually did punch Ginobli in the face on that last-second shot then A) kudos to him, because Manu's a hustle punk, B) he (Kobe) shd be up for an Oscar, and C) CALL IT DURING THE STUPID GAME - I imagine a shitload of bloody-yet-accidental fouls look totally intentional when you're viewing them at quarter-speed 50 times in a row. If the refs don't call it, it shouldn't be worthy of review by anyone else, and it definitely shouldn't result in a suspension.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

The dude's got plenty of Nutella money - fine him a couple grand, then move on. Tho that might set a nasty precedent - if they decide to go back to the video tape so work up a bill for Laimbeer or Rodman or Stockton or whomever...

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

ain't got shit on the o.j. mayo situation, that's some cracker-ass bullshit right there with the flopping ref!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

My guess is that Mayo clipped his shoe from behind.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

my guess is that he was trying really hard for some contact so he could dive and toss him, i would not be at all surprised if it turns out there was some money behind this. did you read the coach's report?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

apparently you can get suspended for the season in that league for contact w/a ref - so it would be money well spent by a rival.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

did you read the coach's report?

Oh my, that certainly sheds a different light on this stuff.

That coach has nice handwriting!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Despite the way he misspells "receive," Coach is pretty articulate.

c(,,c) (Leee), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

SHIT IS FOUL. these two teams are apparently huge rivals in rival cities, wouldn't surprise me a bit

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 1 February 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

That is ridiculous! Getting T'd up for picking up & walking w/ the ball after the dunk = OK, understandable. The nonsense afterwards (where the tape shows that same ref eyeballing Mayo the entire time after that confrontation @ midcourt post-dunk, then T-ing him up after walking back towards the middle of the court, then flat-out FALLING FORWARD when Mayo just walks up behind him) is, um, nonsense. Of a cracker-ass fashion.

I don't know how a world-class jump shooter "accidentally" flails his arm in the direction of a defender in a motion that was not part of any other shot he's ever taken.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Friday, 2 February 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, come on. Like you've never wanted to hit Ginobili in the face? This is maybe the only time I've ever felt sympathetic towards Kobe.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Friday, 2 February 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

sweet sweet game last nite - ginobili and his knee lifting stodimire up by his crotch was uuuuugh brutal, suns winning was too satisfying. they seemed a little unsure @ first like is this shit really gonna work against a serious team, then they hit the groove and took care of em. spurs are def a little out of synch these days - not sure why. and i am just so sick of traveling being called at the beginning of a drive - why when you've got all these new rules/enforcements to improve flow must you harp on such bullshit?

Cute item, but I'm quite bothered by the spun "See? We're doing good!" PR-ness of the article: "Like blindness, guide dogs do not discriminate and are a resource for anyone." Blindness is a resource! And if only we were dogs instead of racists!

Aww, Malinka!

But this King James quote throws me:

LeBron James, however, said he didn't think an openly gay person could survive in the league.

"With teammates you have to be trustworthy, and if you're gay and you're not admitting that you are, then you are not trustworthy," James said. "So that's like the No. 1 thing as teammates -- we all trust each other. You've heard of the in-room, locker room code. What happens in the locker room stays in there. It's a trust factor, honestly. A big trust factor."

Does the article misinterpret what Lebron's saying? Because I read it as saying that being out = being trustworthy.

c(,,c) (Leee), Friday, 9 February 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I believe 100% that Lebron's being progressive here, just holding out some hope that someone (who matters, NBA-wise) isn't going to trot out the old "LOL GAY OK BY ME JUST DON'T SLIP YOUR DIGGLER IN MY SWEET ANUS YOU UNCONTROLLABLE GAY" chestnut.

c(,,c) (Leee), Friday, 9 February 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

that just seems like a good excuse to be mad at gay guys -- 'i woulda been okay with yr homoösity if you'd just told me, i woulda respected that. but NOW I HATE U', typical have it both ways scenario

Foyle darted over to the federal building in downtown Oakland after practice Thursday to take an oral exam. He was given about 100 questions to study. He was asked about 20 of the 100 questions Thursday. How did he do?

The worst part for Black President?
I think the worst part about it was that my Internet connection wasn’t acting right last night so my video game session wasn’t working. It kept kicking me offline so I didn’t actually get to fully play.

So, when you’re injured and video games is your life and you can’t play it, it just makes the injury that much worse.
