the cavs need to get someone young and strong up front given the likelihood that they'll meet up w/howard again in the future.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

hawks need to:

-trade josh smith (douchebag, will never reach his superstar ceiling)
-possibly should trade joe johnson (who i LOVE, but he's in the last year of his contract so idk - he is only 28 though so maybe a 3 or 4 year deal? or maybe just something to think about at the deadline next year if the hawks happen to be out of it)
-re-sign bibby i guess
-sign rasheed wallace because he is a glorious scholar king

Some speculation in Miami that Toronto will trade Bosh this season (rather than lose him in the 2010 offseason), and further speculation that he could be traded to Miami for Michael Beasley.

(I'll dig up the link shortly).

Links (all from Miami Herald): Heat Can Be The Real Deal Sooner Than Expected; Raptors' Chris Bosh Interested In Playing for Heat; and, to be fair, Sentiment Against Trading Beasley (for Bosh).

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love said on Twitter that Kevin McHale will not return as coach next season.

In an update posted early Wednesday, Love tweeted, "Today is a sad day ... Kevin McHale will NOT be back as head coach this season."

"P.S. I am not a breaking news guy..." Love tweeted. "I had no idea no one knew..I'll tell them I stayed at a holiday inn express (sic) last night. Always works...."

One NBA executive: "I'll just tell you this is the worst draft in decades. People are going to get excited about guys. But this is a terrible draft. Guys are going to screw up big time." He meant his peers. "A number of my colleagues are warming up to it," Mr. Sunshine continued. "I think they're making a big mistake."

The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto, a Bucks source told ESPN.com's Chad Ford.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

This makes the Spurs dangerous - if they can stay healthy. I'm a little suspect about trading away one of their few legit big men who could spell Timmeh - he was running on an empty tank and bum knees at the end of this past season.

But shit - if he can recuperate and maybe start getting some quality rehab, if he's got a healthy Parker, Ginobilli and Jefferson? Yikes.

With this past year's emergence of Houston and Denver as big-time competitors, and Portland waiting in the wings, the Western Conference playoffs should be scary as hell next year.

Any word on Yao's foot?

the outcome for the spurs really depends on how they fill those 4/5 slots.

Trading for another old guy when you are already too old seems like a bad idea to me.

Sad that the most exciting offseason news thus far is Dirk's personal life.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

jefferson's like 29 or 30, fits in well with the 2 year window the spurs probably have.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

Word is that the Spurs are going to make a run at Gortat.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

I don't buy it. I think they need to get younger and more athletic around the big three even short term (that's assuming that Ginobli is every healthy enough to be part of the big three.)

I do not understand why Dumars wouldn't pull the trigger on Rondo/Allen for Hamilton/Prince/Stuckey.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

I'd rather have Rondo than any of those dudes and dumping all those cap problems on the Celtics is yay yay.

something fucked abt this rumor imo.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

he just needs to go on a bender w/ nash (xp)

am0n, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

That I would totally watch. Nash on Letterman was great. He's a funny guy.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

rumors about perkins trade too right?

am0n, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

In terms of particulars:

Allen: 1 yr, 18 mil
Rondo: 1 yr, 1.3

for

Prince: 2 yr, 9.5
Stuckey: 1 yr, 1.6
Hamilton: 4 yr, 10.8

So Detroit clears space for the much-ballyhoo'd 2010 offseason, trades a good young point guard for a better one, gets out from under 31-yo Hamilton's long-term deal.

BUT: Their roster is then Rondo, Allen/Afflalo, Maxiell/Amir Johnson, Kwame Brown, and their draft pick (SF Earl Clark? C Mullens? Hansborough?). That team is not going to win a lot of games this year, imo. Maybe they could add some short-term contracts?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

They weren't going to win a lot of games anyway. What's the difference between 20 and 30 wins, really?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

detroit's not gonna sign anyone who can bring them a championship in 2010.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Given how bad their attendance was last year, they might be worried about the health of the franchise in general, and prioritizing that over winning a championship in the near future.

Replacing Bowen and Thomas with Jefferson already makes them younger and more athletic. All they need to do is put Ginobili in touch with Grant Hill's bionic ankle repair services.

In other news, the Sixers have gone back to their old, unimpeachably classic logo. What a relief.

"We reached out to Michael Henderson because he is someone who has experience reffing NBA games, and we actually feel that makes him an ideal candidate," said NBA executive Joel Litvin, who argued that the league is better prepared to impliment a replacement officiating staff than it was 14 years ago.

Wholesale replacement of NBA referees somehow strikes me as a very refreshing idea.

It might just change some of the worst trends in pro ball - the favoritism for established stars - the blind eye turned toward traveling violations and palming - allowing some teams to grab and hack constantly because they do it so much it becomes their "style of play".

College refs who are picked to work the NCAA tournament are a big pool of talent to draw on. Most of them are pretty good. Surely they wouldn't totally flounder at the pro level, if given a chance.

I don't think it's the technical skills of the replacement refs that's at stake here; it's more about the ref's ability to deal with the outsized personalities of the players in the league
