assemble an all-time starting 5 + 1 for a franchise: who the best

ok so basically take the best PG, SG, SF, PF, and C to star for a franchise and then just throw in one as a wild card/bench guy. i guess a good rule of thumb is to pick what team someone played for in their prime. so KG reps minny, shaq would be lakers imo. someone like wilt chamberlain might be more subjective, but i'll leave that to the voting public.

kinda feel like this is already another lakers v. celtics argument in the making.

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Saturday, 12 September 2009 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

c's:
1 - bob cousy
2 - john havlicek
3 - larry boid
4 - kevin mchale
5 - bill russell
x - take yr pick (kc or sam jones, parrish)

lakers
1 - magic
2 - kobles
3 - james worthy
4 - elgin baylor
5 - kareem
x - shaq

lakers due to having more guys recognized by one name

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Saturday, 12 September 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

who else would even be in this argument? sixers, i guess? maybe the spurs. the bulls just on account of having mj?

Clay, Saturday, 12 September 2009 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

The Spurs seem like a bad choice to me. You can add Gervin and Robinson to basically their present-day roster, and I don't think that stacks up to the Celtics/Lakers choices.

That c's roster should have Paul Pierce over kc or sam jones, imo.

New York: Mark Jackson, Earl Monroe, Frazier, Reed, Ewing
Sixers: Cheeks, Greer, Erving, Barkley, Malone, Cunningham, Iverson

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 September 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

w0w that Celtics/Lakers all-franchise matchup is amazing. What a backcourt by the Lakers. What a frontcourt by the Celtics. Would it be totally heretical to take Shaq over Kareem? And wow, no room for Garnett on that Celtics squad, I guess.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 12 September 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

i'd consider kg a minny all-time guy, anyway

jazz might have an interesting team:

stockton, maravich, boozer, malone, mark eaton, d-will

re: spurs, gervin and robinson to their present day lineup would be pretty impressive

parker, gervin, sean elliot, duncan, d-rob, ginobili

u know who look intersting is the warriors

tim hardaway, spree, rick barry, chris mullin, wilt, baron

can't think of a proper 4 there, though

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Monday, 14 September 2009 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

xxp i'd take hornacek even at that point in his career over boozer

tim hardaway, spree, rick barry, chris mullin, wilt, baron

I'd take Nate Thurmond over Spree, and they could use some size up front imo.

None of these teams comes closes to Celtics/Lakers all-franchise squads. Not even my beloved Miami Heat! (who probably come in middle or toward-bottom of the league, I guess).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 September 2009 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

I meant "as they could use", btw.

I agree about those teams not coming close.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 14 September 2009 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

I always think of Baron as a Charlotte Hornets kinda guy tho

xp glen rice squeaks in i think. eddie jones? (dunno about prime but had his best scoring years there)

to ehhhhhhrrrrrr (tremendoid), Monday, 14 September 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

I guess. Still not a very formidable team. Now if you want to play 2-on-2, then we can have a debate (still take Celtics or Lakers; beyond that . . . ?)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 September 2009 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

can't think of a proper 4 there, though

If you get to say Mark Eaton for the Jizz, then the Warriors can get Webber as the PF. Failing that... Tyrone Hill? Tom Guggenheim?

Leee, Monday, 14 September 2009 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

haha mark eaton was there his whole career! c-webb was there for like 2 nonconsecutive years, rite? and mark eaton is second all-time in career blocks! role players can be all-time franchise guys in this situation.

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Monday, 14 September 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

that lakers team doesn't even have jerry west in it! pretty stacked.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Celtics team doesn't have

  • K. Garnett
  • Dennis Johnson
  • Ray Allen
  • Nate Archibald
  • Bill Walton
  • Two of the following: Robert Parrish, Sam Jones or KC Jones
. . . among others. So also pretty stacked.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 September 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

Garnett and Allen are ineligible!

suns are pretty good, first round playoffs prob?

Kidd Nash Barkley Hawkins Adams Amare

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

i guess a good rule of thumb is to pick what team someone played for in their prime. so KG reps minny

I ain't goin' by this. KG won his Championship with the C's.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 September 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

That's silly though. If you aren't going by prime, you at least have to go by where he played a majority of his ball.

Anyone other than the Lakers or the Celtics getting votes is silly. There is a reason why they have won like half the championships. Gotta figure Sixers, Detroit and Houston are probably 3-4-5.

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

"K. Garnett
Dennis Johnson
Ray Allen
Nate Archibald
Bill Walton
Two of the following: Robert Parrish, Sam Jones or KC Jones"

Except for the two of the followings, all of those players were past their peak when they played for the Celts and/or they barely suited up for more than a season or two. Bill Walton was a great player and a great role player for the Celtics, but he doesn't deserve a vote over Robert Parrish.

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta figure Sixers, Detroit and Houston are probably 3-4-5.

Spurs deserve mention, too.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 September 2009 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if the lakers claim to wilt is a stretch (and it is) no way the celts get those guys

to ehhhhhhrrrrrr (tremendoid), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

Or the Celts get 'em, but they get them in the capacity that they played for them (so old KG, DJ, Tiny, Bill, etc, not in their primes.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

"Spurs deserve mention, too."

Yeah although Gilmore was pretty old by the time they got him so really you are talking about Robinson-Duncan-Gervin-Manu-Parker. And Rodman haha.

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 September 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

if you're making Houston's team do you try playing Yao and Hakeem together? do you let Stevie onto the team? do you count T-Mac or give him to the Magic?

we like cars, we like cartoons (dyao), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

if you're making Houston's team do you try playing Yao and Hakeem together? do you let Stevie onto the team? do you count T-Mac or give him to the Magic?

I think if you play them together, they have no chance of winning against these other teams.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

"if you're making Houston's team do you try playing Yao and Hakeem together? do you let Stevie onto the team? do you count T-Mac or give him to the Magic?"

Where do you play MOSES and Yao and Hakeem? Team is crazy deep at center.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a Philly guy so I think of Moses as Philly first; even if he did play longer/win an MVP with Houston

it's okay though, Houston can just roll out Ming/Sampson/Hakeem and then maybe play Stevie and T-Mac in the backcourt
