i am stoked for dejuan blair who rebounded 19 times in 22 minutes

jesus! that was one of those 2nd round steals that was completely obvious to everyone, including the six teams picking in front of them.

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

popovich pretty much h8s giving young guns minutes in the reg, so i'm expecting blair to get less playing time until he learns team stuff better. but he's a total beast on the boards. i don't know where his ceiling is though! he's at least an energy bench player who will hustle hard and bust chops, but if he develops into a good interior d man, i think he could be starting pf for the spurs in a few years (this is assuming duncan is still playing and would be moved to center and tiago splitter either never comes over from tau cermaica or he does come over and sux). he's got barkley size (:-/), have heard comparisons favorably to larry johnson (:-)). he's like already a fan favorite among the type of ppl who care about preseason spurs games (i.e. me).

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah i guess his knees were what scared most teams off, though i don't remember him having any issues last season. Last years draft will be interesting to look back on 4 or 5 years from now. There seemed to be a lot of parity in the entire 1st round (save Griffin). I'm especially siked to see how J Teague does for the Hawks. the early word on him so far is that he's looking like a Jason Terry type player.

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

"he's got barkley size"

Nah he's taller w/ longer arms isn't he?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

arms are longer, but he is generously listed at 6'7" (closer to 6'5" most likely).

your regulatory body is a wonderland (m bison), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't Barkley like maybe 6'4" (listed as ROFL 6'6")?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

That's only an inch obv, but I thought I read somewhere that including wingspan Blair was basically the same height as Griffin?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

obv w vertical leap griffin obliterates him

there's a blap for that (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

Bet you Blair still stomp the shit out of his ass on the boards.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

well sure, griffin is better tho

there's a blap for that (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

from - http://www.nbadraft.net/node/6156

DeJuan Blair measured just 6'5.25 without shoes making him just 6'6 (exactly what we had him listed at all season), but an amazing 7'2 wingspan and a standing reach of 8'10.5 gives him legitimate power forward size. His 1.5 inch standing reach advantage over Griffin almost doesn't seem possible.

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

Probably. Griffin'll certainly get more opportunities to put up big numbers this year. Anyway I was just saying that this isn't quite like Barkley who really was freakishly short w/ an enormous ass basically. Blair maybe on the short-ish side (and he certainly wouldn't be the first *cough* Kevin Love *cough* PF who'd exagerrated about his height) but I don't see it affecting his performance even at the NBA level cuz his overall length is perfectly acceptable for his position.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

the drawback to his shorter body would be offensively, thinking like outside the low post trying to put shots over tall and longer players who can get a lot of hands and arms in his face, but yeah his reach makes the other stuff less of an issue.

Stephon Marbury says he has "shut everything down" and has no plans to play this season, but expects to return to the NBA in 2010-11, the New York Post reported.

"I'm resting, doing what Michael Jordan did, enjoy life, do things I haven't done in 16 years, keep building my empire," Marbury said, according to the Post. "I wasn't going to Boston for that money. It was a prudent business decision to take off this year."

Marbury said he plans to attend the Knicks' home opener on Oct. 31, according to the report. But he says he's surprised anyone else wants to pay to see the Knicks. And he made it clear that the bad blood between him and the team -- and coach Mike D'Antoni -- has not yet been forgiven or forgotten.

"I'm just talking as a fan and New Yorker who grew up loving the Knicks: Why would I give you my money to watch them?" Marbury said, according to the Post. "This is atrocious. Guys coming down court, just raising up 3-pointers from anywhere. The coaching is horrible. What kind of coaching is this?"

"The only person who seemed to be really into the game was Saunders. At the start of the fourth quarter, Fabricio Oberto was called for fouling former Maryland product Joe Smith. Saunders cursed, saying that the foul call was horse manure. He was immediately handed a technical foul. "If I got a tech every time I said that, I wouldn't coach a game in this league," Saunders said.

But Saunders provided more entertainment afterward. When Hawks guard Mo Evans missed the technical foul, Saunders channeled his inner Rasheed Wallace and shouted, "Ball don't lie!" The coaches on the bench chuckled.

Smith went up and missed the first free throw and Saunders shouted again, "Ball don't lie!" Smith missed the next free throw and Saunders shouted, "Ball really, really, really don't lie!" Sam Cassell nearly fell out of his chair."

Bryant was engaged defensively, helping hold Jackson to four-for-11 shooting after the Warrior berated him in an interview leading up to the game in which he called Bryant a "dirty" player who gets away with fouls that don't get called.

"I'm not a fan of Kobe. I'm not somebody who looks up to him," Jackson told Bay Area reporters. "I'm a grown man, so when I go out there and play the game, I play the game. I feel like I'm just as good as him. I might not get the publicity or the notoriety he gets, but I feel like I can play with anybody in the NBA."

Bryant declined to comment after the game, but Phil Jackson said Stephen Jackson's comments had an effect.

"That'll motivate Kobe," Jackson said. "I was wondering why he was so hyped up to start the game."

In a recent interview with Maxim.com, Cavaliers superstar LeBron James(notes), who was in fact dunking on a regulation rim before the age of one, was asked who he would most like to be able to posterize.

His answer was a little surprising:

If it doesn't have to be a basketball player, George W. Bush. I would dunk on his ass, break the rim, and shatter the glass.
