consensus has la cleve bos orlando and sa as the contenders - curious to see in sa can stay at all healthy before i elevate them - but anyway i see it something like

1 lakers - bynum big improvement more than compensates for likely slight declines from kobe n lamar - curious to see if artest can regain some of his defensive form
2 orlando - theyre getting a healthy nelson back and carter is a big upgrade over turkoglu - howard should improve and theres no reason to suspect the D wont be just as good - this team is serious - kinda want to pick them to win
3 cavs - lebron needs help man its sort of sad - but then maybe lebron doesnt neeed help eh - prediction: shaq will not at all be able to guard howard even tho thats 100% why they got him
4 prob too old - see what rondo and an improved bench can do but id be superised if they have the legs to really make this happen

this was the conventional wisdom last year - but they werent a great offensive team - they were on the other hand the best defensive team - if they were such a great match up team youd think itd show up in great offensive stats particularly for turkoglu - but theyre just not there

To be fair, people have been saying this about O'Neal (he's in rapid decline) since he was traded to Miami.

He isn't the player he was in Miami, but we essentially would up trading Shaq for Jermaine, and even last year, I'd have happily taken Shaq of the two.

shaq is losing it slowly but he is losing it. why did cleveland think that getting older and slower was a good idea?

Big centers are valuable.

And he's among the best ever. Not saying Cleveland made a good decision, but -- like Phoenix -- it was an understandable decision (actually moreso than the Suns, since they were such a run-and-gun team).

now they have two big slow guys

my feeling has been that cleveland is deficient on athletes and this isn't any wiser for them than it was for phx

If they can play Z and Shaq for 24 minutes a game each, then maybe they can keep them both fresh. But I wonder what they look like when they want to go small.
