Sabonis had a very pretty passing game and knew precisely how to position himself on the floor for solid picks and rebounds. He had a nice touch around the basket, but the Blazers never used him as an offensive option, so he had to create anything he got in the way of baskets.
On the minus side, by the time he arrived in the NBA he was no longer young or especially athletic. He never overpowered his opponent the way Shaq could and did, despite being Shaq's size. He was enormously strong, but his game was all predicated on finesse.
He often seemed bemused by his less disciplined teammates, such as Rasheed Wallace and J.J. Rider, and his attitude of holding his distance was obvious. I couldn't blame him, really. His solid contribution to the Blazers of that era were mostly overlooked and overshadowed by the freak show.
