Why did no-one shoot 3s in the late 8s/early 90s?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 28 November 2009 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

The NCAA didn't have an official three-point line until '86 or so.

Conservative HOT Mom! (govern yourself accordingly), Saturday, 28 November 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

And even though the NBA had one starting in 1980, it was 23'9" (the eventual college line was originally 19'9").

Conservative HOT Mom! (govern yourself accordingly), Saturday, 28 November 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Guys didn't grow up shooting that deep, therefore weren't as proficient at it, therefore it was a riskier shot, therefore coaches weren't too keen on it. Plus, coaches weren't used to it, and so didn't run an offense that utilized it.

OP: i guess you never heard of the Denver run-n-gun???

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

The most successful use of the system was by Loyola Marymount in 1990 when they advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, beating the defending champion Michigan 149-115 along the way. The style has been used at some other teams. Coach Westhead tried, rather unsuccessfully, to implement the system in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets in the early 90s

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:23 (fourteen years ago)

lol avery only player not to score in that DEN/PHX game

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

You're probably too young to remember, but Westhead's LMU upset the crap out of defending national champs Michigan in the tourney the season previous by something like 40 points. It was kinda a big deal.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:28 (fourteen years ago)

haha in the wiki quote

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 04:29 (fourteen years ago)

nah I was 12 in '90 and still into college ball. I remember being excited to watch LMU after hearing the hype, but somehow they make scoring 150 points boring. Give me UNLV w/Larry Johnson, Augmon, Greg Anthony any day, instead.
