Why are the Nets so atrocious?

I look at their roster, and it's definitely below average, but they don't seem like they should be THIS bad.

they have to be utterly terrible at defense right? that's all i can think about. and their bench. they still shouldn't be worse than like EVERY expansion team ever

with lopez / harris / (the improved) yi they'd be pushing for the eighth spot in the east.

just taking a look at the stats, first thing that jumps out at me is that they're shooting a league-worst 42% from the field as a team, a full percentage point behind the second worst team. they make less threes than any other team while also shooting worse than anyone from outside. they're second to last in total rebounding. they score about 90ppg, 2.3 full points worse than the second-worst team in the league.

Basically, they can't put the ball in the goddamn basket.

But like, compare their roster to Golden State's. Is Golden State really ten wins better than them? It's weird!

Why? In a word, mismanagement.

i'll defend golden state and say a LOT of their losses this season could have been avoided but they always totally fuck it up in the 4th quarter. ok i'm outta here

Poly otm. Warriors have been a walking hazmat hazard this season. They can barely dress 9 guys each night, and one game Curry got 6 fouls but stayed in the game because that would've left the team with 4 guys on the floor. How they should be better than any team is a bit o_O aside from Ellis and Curry and lolmaggette.

In fact, only an NBA rule requiring five players to be on the floor kept the Warriors from playing with four in the closing seconds of a 113-104 loss to the Bucks at Oracle Arena.

The Warriors started the game with eight players, but lost one to injury and three to fouls. Stephen Curry was the last to foul out, with four seconds left, and with that the Warriors made NBA history.

One thing is that they have a massively weak bench imo - obviously this is no excuse against Golden State's 48 minute crew but it's a serious wasteland over there past the starters.

otm - this is what's so crazy about it! Like, new expansion teams begin with two rookies and a bunch of guys who have previously been shown to be not good enough to make an NBA roster? And they win more than three games in half a season?

Also, the Nets are in the Eastern Conference!

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The chief executive of the New Jersey Nets will have lunch with a fan who recently wore a brown bag over his head to protest the team's woeful season.

Nets CEO Brett Yormark and Chris Lisi of Middletown will sit down for lunch Tuesday at the Nets' headquarters.

Lunch, of course, will be brown-bag style.

Yormark had a brief heated exchange with Lisi a week ago after seeing him with the brown bag on his head during a game.

Yormark defended his actions the next day, saying he was standing up for his team, which is 9-64 and needs one win in its last nine games to avoid matching the NBA record for fewest wins.

The meeting will be streamed live at www.njnets.com. Yormark and Lisi will be joined by Nets radio broadcasters Chris Carrino and Tim Capstraw.

Two days after the exchange, the Nets offered any fan who put a paper bag on his head during a game against the Sacramento Kings a nylon Nets bag containing a poster, a pack of player trading cards and a printed note from Yormark that said: "Thanks for letting us see your face. We hope to see it more often at Nets' games."

Two people accepted the exchange offer, the Nets said.

NETS REACH AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE WITH AVERY JOHNSON TO BECOME HEAD COACH

East Rutherford, NJ – The New Jersey Nets have reached an agreement in principle with Avery Johnson to become the team’s new head coach, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today.

“We are very pleased to welcome Avery as the new head coach of the Nets,” said Thorn. “He has enjoyed success in this league as both a player and head coach, and we feel that he possesses all of the characteristics, including knowledge, passion and leadership, that are necessary for us to be a championship contender in the years to come.”

“The hiring of Avery Johnson as the Nets head coach is a wonderful first step towards building a winning team,” said Nets Principal Owner Mikhail Prokhorov. “His leadership qualities, knowledge of the game and ability to motivate are all talents we will be calling upon as we move forward. This is the beginning of what I hope will be many more exciting announcements to come before the start of the season.”

“I am really excited to be the head coach of the New Jersey Nets, it’s an honor,” said Johnson. “I want to thank Mikhail Prokhorov and Rod Thorn for their confidence in appointing me as head coach. Johnson brings a 194-70 (.735) career coaching record to the Nets, having led the Dallas Mavericks to the postseason in each of his three-plus seasons as head coach. He holds the highest coaching winning percentage in NBA history and set the record for reaching the 150 win plateau the fastest (191 games). In 2005-06, Johnson led the Mavericks to their first ever appearance in the NBA Finals en route to earning NBA Coach of the Year honors.

Johnson was appointed head coach of the Mavericks on March 19, 2005, following the resignation of Don Nelson. An immediate success, Johnson finished the season with a 16-2 mark, earning Western Conference Coach of the Month honors for April. In his first full season as head coach, Johnson led the 2005-06 Mavericks to a 60-22 record and the team’s first ever Western Conference Championship. The following season, he guided the team to an NBA best 67 wins in 2006-07. Making the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, Johnson holds a career playoff record of 23-24 (.489).

Johnson began the 2004-05 season as an assistant coach with Dallas after retiring as a player on October 28, 2004. In 16 NBA seasons, he averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 25.3 minutes played in 1,054 career games with seven different teams.
