NBA CBA

ira winderman suggests that, if the league wants to create stronger deterrents against stars moving from team-to-team in free-agency, such deterrents can be built-into the new cba. this is one of many issues that will surface over the coming months, as owners and players stare-down one another, and prepare for a possible lockout the following year.

this thread is for discussion about the cba negotiations, the possibility of a lockout, and related topics. i realize this may be (a) premature and (b) too much "insider baseball" to elicit much response. but it's of interest -- broadly at least -- to fans (and lawyers!, actually).

this stuff is v interesting 2 me, esp since 1 of the tite things about the nba is how much clout the players have. THE NBAPA UNION FOREVER!

lol. david stern, as it happens, was an outside counsel with my old firm. so THE COMMISSIONER AND THE NBA TEAMS, (see 2005 CBA, Art. I, ยง 1(i), (kkk), attached as Ex. A), FOREVER!

i think winderman is responding to a problem that doesn't really exist--the nba is a strikingly stable league actually. why is it so dire that chris paul stay in nola with a bad team and terrible ownership situation?

i think the nba has a pretty decent model actually. mlb players are under team control for their first like 6 years or something and the franchise tag in the nfl is straight inhumane

b/c sterndr wants a chicken in every pot and 1 franchise player to be isolated in every market

xp

yeah agreed. in both of those leagues players can easily price themselves out of their original team's budget so the nba already has a big advantage in this area. and guys who play for a team that doesn't suck (kobels, dirk, duncan, etc.) don't generally leave.

i love the soft cap and bird rights tbh, silly sign and trade deals are a small price 2 pay 4 team stability+players getting paid.

i feel like maybe a two-tiered luxury tax system might bring more parity. right now, i think it's a dollar tax for every dollar spent over the limit. maybe a threshold that's another 10 mil above sez u pay $2 for every $1 you spend over that.

NBA benefits by having such small teams, making superstar players much more affordable. Pretty much any team can afford two max contracts in the NBA.

yeah, but iirc, the owners are emphasizing the need for a "franchise tag" in the new cba.

What do people want as fans? I realised the other day that I'm not sure I've *ever* seen Chris Paul play - NOLA are just never ever on TV at all.

a personal wish of mine: contract 2 teams, and move one other team to seattle to be renamed the sonics

So I know Stern is just trying to scare the players as much as possible right now, but it's still hilarious that he can't decide whether the league needs to think about contracting teams or, uh, create an NBA division in Europe.

Also, apparently Mo Evans is on the NBPA executive committee.

I know you want to have some backup if someone kills Fish, but that's a whole lot of VPs.

did not realize that the nfl may have a lock-out in 2011, also.

bizzare if next year brings no nba or nfl seasons.

Yeah remember when the Marlins kept crying poor. Don't trust anything owners say.
