you may have heard i have a free throw proposal, its based on the observation that the most tedious part of the nba game is the dead ball free throw rebound, this aims to eliminate that

in short there is only ever one free throw taken per trip to the line - if its an and one the free throw is worth one point, if its a 2pt shooting fount the free throw is worth two points, if a shooter is fouled behind the 3pt line its worth three

think abt it, never see another between free throws listless low five ever again!

I played in a basketball league with a running clock once. It was pretty cool, the only bummer was like if you were taking free throws with 3 seconds left, and down 1, you were screwed...they wouldn't let you take any after time hit :00.

TV timeouts are the absolute worst IMO - they're just such an open concession of not caring about anything but $$$. I wish there was some premium league pass package where if you watched the game on delay they just cut all the breaks and free throw warmups to > 5 seconds - would be amazing to watch.

I don't but I have done a complete 180 on the sport in the past year or so - used to think it was boring, now think it's fucking awesome - in a weird way it's got a lot in common with perennial LJ faves cricket and snooker in that it is a sport of consistency where genius is revealed sometimes in moments of brilliance but most commonly in displays of persistence and reliability - when reliable opponents are pitted against each other it is great seeing who will prevail under pressure

this 'reliability', privileging process over moment, tending towards eternity rather than singularity, is a great draw for me - it encourages equanimity and a broader worldview perhaps - now in 'momentary' sports such as soccer and NFL, this worldview can still be attained as those sports can be viewed not as being about the moment of score as about the momentum, the shift in gameplay which permits acts of expression that may not lead to a score - furthermore, both sports can be seen as gameplay where EVERY action is crucial - even an inept action creates positivity for some - hence, with those sports one can make peace with the violence of moment and accept the efforts of every player as valid. just saying that the 'reliability' sports make this peace more manifest; they demand it in their very nature; it must not be extracted by knowledge of gameplay but lies plain to see in the very nature of the scoring.

thought u wd like what i wrote - am growing increasingly interested in ideas of equanimity and buddhist theory - what is 'winning' and 'expression', and why must they be balanced by 'losing' and 'silence', and is this a bad thing, and if there is losing, must there also be designated losers (no to both imo)

basically in basketball everyone wins if they have integrity and put in effort - they usually have material gains to show for it too! not that this is impt - playing to win is more honorable than winning or netting loads of points

it is a sport of great democracy - one can never be the 'loser' who fucked up that one time - it always offers u more chances - also u can never be the one-moment hero unless u threw the length of the court with 0.3 seconds to go that one time

New rule - if you beat a team by forty or more points, you get to officially rename that team for a week...

of course i've always held that basketball and soccer are the same sport but you've got a great point about the importance of reliability, consistency, the long haul. you never get basketball players or pundits saying "we deserved the win but didn't get it" - you have enough chances to do your very best
