anyone who thinks he is a top 5 player is just an absolute lost cause stan at this point - he's in the 8-12 range

bros -izing bros (k3vin k.), Friday, 1 July 2011 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

voted top 10

bros -izing bros (k3vin k.), Friday, 1 July 2011 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah we did this in the other thread but he's right on the edge of top 10. voted top 10 a little warily (i'm not sure he'll necessarily be there at the end of whenever the next season is) but would say top 15 with confidence.

dude's per minute avg's in pts, rebs, asts all went UP last year. granted, if a guy can sustain play for less than 35 mpg when he used to be able to give you 38ish, that's a dip in a production catergory.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i said he was top 10! i'm not sure there are 19 players better than him is what i'm saying

Kobe is the type who will utterly destroy his body before he quits, because he is completely mental. After he retires, he will cart his worn-out husk of a body from place to place, glaring at people, muttering, "I'm fucking KOBE BRYANT, that's who I am", and frequently hitting anyone with reach of his crutches.

I dunno 'bout CRAZY. It looked like a decent, but not extraordinary, fall away jump shot to me. However, the crowd seems a bit CRAZY.

kobe helps out some bros in the laker video dept

Kobe Bryant insisted on giving some of the team’s playoff bonus to two members of the Lakers’ video department whose contracts were not renewed after the season. Chris Bodaken and Patrick O’Keefe split about $65,000 of the Lakers’ playoff bonus.

Bodaken started with the Lakers as a ball boy in 1986 and spent the last 10 seasons as their director of video services. O’Keefe was the Lakers’ video coordinator for six seasons. They both hope to be re-hired by the team when the NBA lockout ends. For now, they are thankful for Bryant’s financial gesture.

“He always looks out for people who are lower on the totem pole,” O’Keefe said.

Said Bodaken: “At the end of the day, he told us he was going to take care of us and he did, and that’s not how most people in the world operate. He not only talks the talk. He walks it.”

i'm not saying he's the 20th best player in the nba -- i would put him closer to like... 12th. but the options are top 10 or top 20, so that's what im voting

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

i think we went over this in the other thread but

players that are better than kobe right now

bron
wade
dirk
dwight
cp3
durant
melo
rose
amare

... at this point it gets super close! kobe could be #9 or #10 imo, or he could be #11 or #12, i guess i'm willing to bet on a player or two (love? z-bo? blake? aldridge?) making a leap up over kobe at his age than kobe maintaining that exact level

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

the thing is for a player like kobe once he's out of the top 10 it doesn't even matter if he's 11th or 12th, either he's one of the most relevant players in the NBA or... he's not.

dayo, Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah you're right xp

mark (er) s (k3vin k.), Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

don't know if i'd rather have melo or amare rather than kobe on my team. already super close at that point imo. pure skill/athleticism yes they have eclipsed the bean but they both are so deficient in the mental aspects of winning nba games/nba playoff series that i don't know if it makes up for that.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 21 August 2011 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah like against the mavs last year

k3vin k., Sunday, 21 August 2011 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

the thing about kobe is that he's generally adjusted well to his age, letting guys like gasol & bynum & odom get theirs... except sometimes when he still feels the need to be like KOBE BRYANT, ONE OF THE BEST EVER which can be damaging. thinking of game 7 of the last boston finals, the game in miami last year where he was just jacking up threes and you knew nothing was gonna go in

again, if someone told me that kobe was going to be a top 5 player in the nba next season i wouldn't be shocked or anything. but at this point i'd place my bet on someone like carmelo or amare

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah those dudes are in their primes and kobels is on the decline. like you said, he's aged pretty well - the two factors that best correlate w/ basketball longevity are height and shooting ability, and kobe's big for a guard and has improved his j - and is still an elite or almost-elite player.

k3vin k., Sunday, 21 August 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

This must made me a little sad, again, for the years of Yao we won't get to see.

a++ argument

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

i voted top 10. of the guys on j0rdan's list i'd put him ahead of amare and carmelo and about equal to a few of the others. if there's a season it'll be interesting to see how he looks by the end of it.

looking at the per rankings for last season, kobe was 5th, but players 6-11 were all really close. and kevin love was #4, which seem way high at this point.
