Poll: Blocks vs. steals

A steal is by definition a change of possession. A block is not necessarily one. So I'd value steals higher, but blocks are cooler.

Blocks, while they may not result in a change of possession, often have a lasting disruptive effect on the subsequent flow of the offense toward the basket, so they have a long lasting ripple effect. The more blocks, the bigger those ripples.

Steals often result in breakaway baskets which can alter the momentum of the game. Look at how often a TO is taken by the team that had the ball stolen vs. had a shot blocked, in an attempt to dull the impact of the play.

steals definitely, mostly for what EZ said. their point values have actually been quantified, i forget what they are though. an assist for example is worth 0.66 points i think

blocks tend to be cooler though

imo steals have more intrinsic value, but there's more noise w/r/t who collects steals and their actual defensive abilities. So if I was picking a stat to judge a player's value by I would go with blocks.

steals+deflections is wayyy better.

i lurk on ilh (but did not vote in this poll). mostly because i live in a timezone that doesnt allow me to watch nba games and also coz i feel like i'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to say anything worthwhile !

blocks are good imo because they create the threat of a block
