Over the weekend, news broke that the New York Knicks were dragging their feet in matching the Houston Rockets' matching the Houston Rockets' $25 million contract offer to point guard Jeremy Lin5 million contract offer to point guard Jeremy Lin. As the nervous laughter of Knicks fans ("Ha, this is hilarious ... can you imagine? No but really, guys. Sign him.) turned into acts of hair-pulling and fist-shaking and full-blown Twitter meltdowns, our fearless leader, Bill Simmons, posed the question: If the Knicks, following the apparent financial advice of Carmelo Anthony, turn their back on the most exciting, well-liked player to rock blue and orange since [insert beloved Knicks player Sprewell, Starks, Ewing ... Renaldo Balkman], would New York fans be wise to turn their back on the team and become fans of the other New York franchise, the Brooklyn Nets? Simmons certainly thought so. We asked several members of the Grantland family, some of whom count themselves as Knicks supporters, for a verdict...

I'm not reading this nonsense either. I have no idea if Lin is worth that kind of money, but it is clear to me that the Knicks don't have a coherent strategy and most of their moves are just reflexive, so whatever they do it won't be aimed toward winning, but based on random ideas passing through the front office.

Lin is worth the first two years of the contract, especially when you factor in marketing, but the third season is nuts. And with those three huge contracts weighing them down, it doesn't make sense to add a fourth.

Poblano disagrees with me:

both teams are doomed to spend $200 million on at best 2nd round fodder for about the next 10 years, its just a matter of which stadium is closer for you to go to or what team colors you prefer

all these say basically the same thing.

I agree with Poblano. With or without him they're probably a first-round team for the next few years, but with him they at least have a basis for fan excitement. And frankly with the Nets coming to town and Brooklyn becoming the preferred address of a growing number of the young and moneyed, the Knicks have to compete for fans.
