Blazers #1, Bill Simmons can suck it.

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I posted on the playoffs thread already, but shit! Blazers! I can't think straight about it!

Clay, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

and Sonics #2! my northwest is pulling it down. So who goes 1/2? Some mock draft thing i read has it as Oden first, then Durant.

um okay

thing is, blazers need oden more than they need durant -- a big man down low with actual skills is really our only huge need. on the other hand, i would not be surprised to see us trade the pick for a superstar veteran. PAUL PIERCE ARE YA FEELIN IT.

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 13:03 (seventeen years ago) link

oh so cruel stop toying w/me.

aldridge and randolph can be v productive for years and i'm not shure who you think you've got playing the 3 that's so hot... but all of that is irrelevant - durant is gonna be better.

jhøshea, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

So wait if Mourning is Oden's upside, then Durant = Jordan?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Plus Alonzo Mourning back in the 90s when there were still a few centers /= Alonzo in the 00s where there is basically Yao and ol' Shaq and nothing else.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks be to all the gods and minor powers! The Blazers now have a new GM, Kevin Pritchard, who knows how to evaluate talent. He has stated that his philosophy is to draft the best player available, not the one who fills in some hole in the chart. I trust his judgement.

That is good news. It deftly avoids the Sam Bowie vs. Michael Jordan trap the Blazers so famously fell into, when they took Clyde Drexler the year prior and then wanted to fill their hole at center. (BTW, Olajuwan went #1 in that draft. Bowie was #2. Jordan was #3.)

Aimless, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

also it seems like paul allen is interested again

jergïns, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Fuck the Boston Celtics. When your team gives a contract extension to the worst coach in the history of the NBA you don't deserve Oden or Durant.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 24 May 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh and not to mention the fact that Boston fans still have the Patriots and the Red Sox. What do us Cleveland fans have? We haven't had a championship in any sport in forty years!

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 24 May 2007 01:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Although I feel a little sympathetic, Cleveland-wise, I am REALLY OTMing the Mr. Snrub eff-a-Boston sentiments. Sorry but no sympathy.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 24 May 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

listen i'm not asking for sympathy but consider this: over the last 20 year the celtics have had their 2 most promising young players die and whiffed on 2 of probably the 3 most important drafts of that span - one of which they had the best chance to land the top pick and the other they had the second best chance. sure the pats and sox are sweet, but what if the c's are by far your favorite team - then what!

(and i wont even get into how fucking retarded managements been during that whole time)

jhøshea, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:07 (seventeen years ago) link

ok 2 out of three of their most promising young players died - and the other one got the shit stabbed out of him.

David R., Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Then I'll t on your cs.

Leee, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

any "problems" your winningest-ever franchise has had are more than balanced out by the number of times we've had to hear 'jail blazers'. also, stephen smith crying about how this is so bad for the nba because the top pick isn't going to an east coast team -- so excellent. CELTS JINXED BY EAST COAST BIAS THEY CREATED IRONY.

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:17 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry i'm being an insensitive asshole. that was uncool, and I apologize.

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i actually do have a lot of sympathy for the celtics. just not for the whole "NBA IS OVER BECAUSE THE NORTHWEST SUXXXOR" line of thinking. eff that.

but my comments about boston were indefensible. i blame the beer and my six years living in boston as a blazer fan.

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Leee, Friday, 25 May 2007 01:21 (seventeen years ago) link

ha

listen i propose that nothing before bird/magic counts as real nba except maybe dr j. there were 16 teams during russell's era and everyone kinda sucked at basketball. so see the c's arent the most winningest franchise eva. and ffs i was 10 the last time they brought it home. and as for the jail blazerz, at least thats hilarious and stuff.

for what its worth i like the blazers. this line up is sweet for years to come.

spanish chocolate
roy
durant
randolph
aldridge

and i pity the blazers fan who hasnt seen this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm7irrWaHTQ

but whatever i dont really like nba no more anyways

the thing adding insult to injury: the suns got screwed too wtf

jhøshea, Friday, 25 May 2007 02:46 (seventeen years ago) link

srsly the combo of this shitty overly physical playoffs when these sweet teams were built around the "new" (except in the playoffs wtf) officiating, the nofun bullshit suns suspensions and now this horrible disaster of a draft has me hating the nba like never before.

jhøshea, Friday, 25 May 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago) link

well okay then, more hoops for me

'o noes suns suspended nba hates fun' = most overhyped thing of all time, but you can certainly overreact to it

also: you were 10 when the celtics last won the nba championship, i was 11 when the trailblazers last won the championship, BUT I AM MUCH MUCH OLDER THAN YOU. also, ignoring 80% of nba history makes you the lex of hoops

but i still love ya jhoshea, keep it realz

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

IM NOT THE LEX OF HOOPS FU

it was bad no one watched it it almost went out of business people didnt know how to jump yet double teaming wasnt even invented they had player coaches and everyone loved to punch each other in the face after staying up for days high on coke - it wasnt like a real "professional sports league" something like lacrosse or the wnba

then there was dr j and he felt a little out of place then larry/magic came along and set shit off then jordan went all man/god then pat riley and david stern decided things were too fun and instituted the basketball/wrestling hybrid we now enjoy

this is what we call the nba

yep the hawks are the most pathetic franchise, that is true. i was in atl for a convention a bunch of years ago and I got great seats for a make-or-break playoff game and if I wanted I could have gone down a bunch more rows, apparently basketball is not a popular sport in that city

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:09 (seventeen years ago) link

FWIW jhøshea, Zach Randolph is twice as boring to watch as Karl Malone was. Maybe three times, cuz Karl at least had a pretty face. He can back down most of the league with his wide body and put the ball in the hole about 47% of the time, but I just don't see how he fits into the talent the Blazers have been assembling. Coach MacMillan seems to have similar thoughts, but hides them as best he can.

I know that I am just blowing smoke, but I have been wondering about the possibility of moving Aldridge to center, drafting Durant, and building the starting team around speed and quickness. They could build a second unit with Pryzbilla at center that runs more sets.

This scheme would include trading Zach for a rebound machine who runs the court and can finish on fast breaks and maybe fishing in the free agents for a shooting guard who doesn't need to dribble to create shots (the ball belongs in Roy's hands).

Like I said, just blowing smoke.

Aimless, Saturday, 26 May 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

a rebound machine who runs the court and can finish on fast breaks

Aimless, you make it sound pretty easy -- but do you really think if such a creature existed, his team wouldn't want to trade him for a player you think is so useless?

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 26 May 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i can understand not liking randolph there is something sort of unsavory and tedious about him. but he's a monster none the less: 23 and 10. granted his fg% couldve been better for someone who spends most of his time on the block, but he offset that by getting to the line and shooting well.

agreed the the blazers would be a lot more fun if they ditched him and just ran and ran. likely durant could play the 4 on a team like that after a few years of nba weight training.

still giving away such a dynamic player for someone to fill a need would be hueg mistake for a team w/so much promise. besides zach still loves you.

http://static.flickr.com/40/79558028_60668732dc.jpg

jhøshea, Saturday, 26 May 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I know Zach can be quite effective at what he does. So was Malone (although Zach is only about 85% of a Karl Malone, 90% tops; Karl was known to move his feet on defense from time to time.) But Zach needs to be at the heart of a grind-it-out half court team and he would fit much better into the Eastern conference than he will into the personnel the Blazers are putting together.

As for who would trade for him and what the Blazers could get, that is much too realistic a problem to fit nicely into my daydreaming, so I ignore it. Surely he's worth something on the trading block (gawd that's sounds so much like a meat market). =:o

Now, if only Darius Miles will declare his career over, due to injury, the whole apparatus might get enough lift to reach the second playoff round next year.

Yeah. Even before this I was coming around to be solidly in the Oden camp. Seems to me like a lock for #1. Durant can't quite stack up against Oden's plus side.

i must admit oden and aldridge will be a sick defensive force for years and years. so now they trade randolph for a 3, no?

jhøshea, Thursday, 28 June 2007 13:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe they can trade him to Boston, and Boston will trade their #5 to Minnesota with Wally Szberbiackakak back to Minnesota, who'll sent Kevin Garnett and 500 autographed Joe Smith 4 x 8s to Atlanta, who'll burn them as part of a sacrifice to The Human Highlight Reel while sending the #3 pick to Phoenix for Amare Stoudamire and D'Antoni's moustache, and the Knicks will pick a 2nd round player 15 picks early and David Stern will choke Isiah Thomas like a bitch.

David R., Thursday, 28 June 2007 13:53 (sixteen years ago) link

jhoshea I know you hate Tim Duncan, but with that one pick the Spurs conjured up four titles, which is mighty impressive given that they would have none otherwise, so I don't think any team could pass up on Oden as the first pick this year.

wow i cant believe i was drunk posting just 5 hours ago - waht a beautiful dream. also cant believing how much the nba hates zach randolph. wtf dude must actually be the douche to end all.

jhøshea, Friday, 29 June 2007 12:43 (sixteen years ago) link

There are much worse douche bags in the nba than Randolph. That isn't saying much in his favor, though. He can give you 20 and 10 every night, but his big problem is that he can't be a role player and you can't build a successful team around him. So he's just another expensive millstone, like so many other players are.

Aimless, Friday, 29 June 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

But is he a bigger or smaller millstone than Steve Francis?

David R., Friday, 29 June 2007 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

He also gives the guy he's guarding about 30 a night while he's obsessing over his own 20 and 10. I went to almost every game at the Rose Garden over the last couple years. Hope Knicks fans enjoy watching Zach stare at the stat counter for 48 minutes.

Clay, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Now the Knicks have two Eddy Currys, although at least Randolph can stick his arms up in the air and grab some boards. The DePaul kid is benefiting quite nicely from the Renaldo Balkman effect!

I love how Marco Bellinellinnellyball wasn't on ANY first round mock drafts, but the talking heads still insisted he was a good pick. It reminds me of when the Patriots draft ... automatic praise. If the Warriors drafted Roberto Benigni or Francesco Totti, I think the response woulda been exactly the same.

Was Tiago Splitter DESTINED to go to the Spurs or what? I was kinda hoping they'd grab Big Baby and have Duncan/Pops whip him into shape, though. Also, I really liked Oberto's play in the playoffs, so it'd be weird if they let him get away in free agency. Resign that fella.

Minnesota drafted Rashad McCants for the third consecutive year.

I'm gonna miss J-Rich. :(

polyphonic, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha, Tiago fulfilled the Spurs annual requisite foreign power forward selection (Luis Scola, Ian Mahinmi) and I'm guessing dude will probably never play for us.

Aimless is otm with this: "but his big problem is that he can't be a role player and you can't build a successful team around him." How many guys in the league can be described this way that basically fill up stat sheets and do fuck all for a team?

m bison, Friday, 29 June 2007 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

oh right. "The brother from DePaul" was maybe my favorite moment of the draft.

Clay, Friday, 29 June 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Is anyone calling Oden "thunder god" yet?
Because I am.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 30 June 2007 09:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Man, Spencer Hawes, strikes one and two here:

Spencer Hawes is a hardcore conservative from, of all places, the liberal stronghold of Seattle. He was drafted into a city (Sacramento) where one of the country's most recognizable Republican governors (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is in office. Hawes says he "loves" Arnold, and that he brought True Lies with him on the trip to New York, with plans to watch it on the flight home. "Now it has a little extra meaning for me," Hawes said.

When I spoke with Hawes at the league's predraft camp on May 31, he talked about a recent Public Debate class exercise at the University of Washington. In it, he said, he denied the entire existence -- and human cause -- of global warming. When asked for his take on Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, Hawes said, "It's one big lie. I talked about that in my opening speech -- it's the media's liberal overexaggeration of just about everything."

Will root for his demise openly.

m bison, Saturday, 30 June 2007 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

God of lightening, more like.

The past two days I've picked up The Oregonian newspaper to find stories and photos that try to emphasize how immensely huge Greg Oden is. That's silly. He isn't a new Shaq. The Trailblazers already have a center, Pryzbilla, who's bigger than Oden in both height and weight.

Oden's gift is his quickness and timing for his size. He runs like the wind, moves his feet like blue blazes, shifts to the weak side in a blink, and times his jumps excellently well. He's a 7 ft. gazelle, not a sasquatch. He even looks Bill Russell. Sweet.

But he isn't the biggest guy in the league by a long shot.

Aimless, Saturday, 30 June 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Could someone tell Spencer Haw-Hawes that Arnold favors gay marriage and a federally mandated cap on CO2 emissions?
