am i wrong to think mankins is coming out of this looking like the asshole?

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 02:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah if he thinks he is as good as jahri evans (quite possibly the best guard in the game) he is an asshole

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 02:55 (fourteen years ago) link

The way the Patriots treat free agents, I don't blame him for trying to get every penny he can.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 07:04 (fourteen years ago) link

you mean the way they offer free agents the money the organization thinks they're worth rather than what the player thinks, or have they been torturing free agents in a dungeon somewhere and i just haven't heard about it?

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 10:48 (fourteen years ago) link

The Patriots are unsentimental when it comes to deciding how much a player is worth. It is a smart way for them to do business, but I don't see how Mankins trying to get the best contract he can is any different. It's not his job to help the team cut costs by sacrificing money from his contract (assuming he could get more elsewhere, which I think he could). And honestly, he's a pretty good player. He might not be Evans but he's certainly one of the best at his position.

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i guess it's just boring the way mankins is taking his case to the media--like, dude, you were bad last year and they still offered you 30-something million. ::shrug::

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 18:25 (fourteen years ago) link

The Patriots' last offer, which has has been on the table for "a significant period of time", was a five-year deal worth approximately $7 million per season and would place the two-time Pro Bowler comfortably among the top five paid guards in the NFL, according to a league source.

you...you don't need an o-line to win games, right? or a d-line? or lbs? or cbs? right? right?? cos i'm thinking, if you do need any of those things, maybe it is going to be a long ol' 16 games for los patritos :(

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

no doubt. mankins won't be playing at all, i'm guessing? and they just lost leigh bodden for the season.

but i don't know what to think about any team, except packers and saints will be good.

4th rounder is a fair price for Branch, probably a deal.

Moss would have had more value if he wasn't demanding a contract extension, and if he wasn't a risk of being problematic if traded to a franchise he wasn't happy with.

I've been pretty darn happy with every Pats move since the Seymour deal.

STEELS: this will be a great game if it happens. NE not gonna put up 39pts again but i'd be pretty confident they'd manage to score more than pburgh
RAVES: seems to me like people are forgetting that these dudes aren't actually very good this year
JETES: no way these clowns win a playoff game at foxbo
CHEEVS: i think this would have to be the championship game to happen, so unlikely, but i would be v worried because of the alumnus factor cf. recent losses to denver/mcdaniels and browns/mangini teams neither of which were anything like as good as this KC team
IND/JAK: fending off the peyty comeback this year broke that hoodoo/jags are str8 dump/pats win vs either of these. but the south winner loses to the north wildcard anyhow.

is a spiralli not concerned about what the ravens did in foxboro last year?

BIG SANTA aka the sleighdriver (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 December 2010 05:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not a flacco backer at all but i think the ravens are pretty damn solid on offense

the pats offense is interesting tho cuz i feel like it really puts an emphasis on how well you can pass cover & de-emphasizes the ability to stop the run (why the pats o killed the steelers) & rush the passer

ravens CBs are pretty shaky right?

BIG SANTA aka the sleighdriver (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 December 2010 05:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i really feel like the chiefs could make a run to the afc title game a la the jets last year -- idk if their defense is necessarily good enough but any team that can run the ball as well as they do has a chance to win two games in the playoffs

BIG SANTA aka the sleighdriver (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 December 2010 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

if i was a pats fan i'd still be the most concerned about the colts since the games have just been crazily close in the past two years

actually the more i think about it the more i like the chiefs -- amazing running game, cassell has been judicious w/ the ball this year, dwayne bowe is a legit #1 wr

BIG SANTA aka the sleighdriver (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 December 2010 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

the question marks next to KC are #1 how they deal with the playoffs, which is basically a new experience for nearly all concerned, and #2 the fact that they had the easiest regular season schedule, including just one real playoff team (real=excluding the nfc west). if i have it right they would have to go thru the jets and the north winner to get to the champs game. would love it, can't see it.

maybe i am underestimating baltimore but they haven't really looked too convincing when i have seen them this year. they suffered from crappy offensive playcalling earlier in the season, with too much on flacco and rice hardly in games. it looks like they are doing better now but i don't think they are an O that inspires fear. if NE can keep the ball a little and not have their defense on the field for 40 minutes they will contain them. this is obv the key to the pats' season in general. the good news is that they have mostly been doing a great job of making teams fear being passed on and moving the ball on the ground with that pair of reject backs. and baltimore are sufficiently scared of being passed on.

overall, my thinking is, in any given game if the pats play well they will definitely beat any of these teams with 2 exceptions: pburgh is the only D that could make the NE O look bad even if they play well, and indy is the only team that can keep scoring points regardless of how well NE play. but i maintain that if they make it the colts lose their first game anyway.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 27 December 2010 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

pats w/ brady are 6-1 i believe vs pitt? he picks apart that d so i would think theyd have to really give him some new, unexpected looks/schemes

im not the biggest ravens or flacco backer either but flacco has impressed me in the last few wks and id give balt the best odds at winning in ne

not sure if anyone posted this yet so:

Which, sure, except that Favre is already gone, and has been for some time. There's plenty to mourn about his departure, because he used to be fun and because he'll be replaced by narcissists of a crueler and more corporate cast—think of Tom Brady's joyless tuff-model mug, or Tim Tebow's blissful, boring evangelical boilerplate. Favre did indeed hang on too long, but not in the sense of no longer being able to make the throws or take the hits anymore. His mistake was getting high on his own supply, and sticking around long enough to disappear into his own misty mythos. Celebrity hollowed him out, as it does, and what's left of his old roguish joy now feels false and overdetermined; his press conferences may well be honest, but they are also claustrophobic—weird, rambling tours of the ornate, echoing ego-Xanadu in which he lives. He can't go away any more than Lindsay Lohan can, because there is an industry that depends on him, from which he also draws a sizable paycheck. But the better Favre—the one who really was Like A Kid Out There, as opposed to the one who merely regressed to childishness by overindulgence and self-addiction—is a long time and a long way gone.

there's now a little self-awareness with the media where they know if they ask him a broad question about football strategy he will just go and go (in contrast to asking him anything specific about the current state of the team), and i think bill is in on the bit at this point, but i can't argue with the output. he's an encyclopedia and really good at explaining this stuff.

I haven’t even mentioned how the [Patriots were] banned from home field Monday Night Football games from 1981 to 1995 because of a mass inebriation festival in which a man fell ill with a heart attack and some fans urinated on the EMTs while they were working on him and, after the game, some idiot had stolen a goal post and, on his way up Route 1, he hit some power lines and electrocuted himself.
