BFeldmanESPN USC has been hit with a two-year post-season ban in addition to the loss of scholarships, among other penalties from the NCAA.

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago) link

that is horrible news. i guess we won't have to worry about usc being good again this decade... let the transfers begin.

dad, i wanna be a lothario speedwagon (ytth), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:07 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, really wonder what the max exodus is gonna be like

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, usc was obv. guilty so now i can get all uppity and compare what they did vs. what alabama did to get the same sanctions, or i can just be mad at college football for being dumb and punishing people who were in 7th grade at the time of the violations because that's all they can do. as a fan, it sucks... a one-year postseason ban would have been one thing, but i really do think this will cripple the program to near washington-state levels.

dad, i wanna be a lothario speedwagon (ytth), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:23 (fourteen years ago) link

this won't cripple the program more than kiffin will

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 11:43 (fourteen years ago) link

^ quality post.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:21 (fourteen years ago) link

it's gonna be a long, long time til usc wins a bigpac32 championship

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I was kinda expecting to feel more schadenfreude about the whole USC thing, but honestly I am more happy that Colorado is apparently definitely in the Pac-10, and Texas is likely to follow. I was kind of worried the Pac-16 was gonna get stuck with Baylor.

C-L, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link

scholarship losses are going to fuck them more than anything

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

devil's advocate here: maybe what USC actually needs right now is someone who is better at recruiting their ass off than actually coaching? even tho winning actual games is obv tied up in recruiting, you probably need a guy right now that's an amazing salesman (& a guy who can develop players etc etc). maybe not, idk.

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I mean these next 2 years esp when you gotta work w/ a tainted brand.

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess this explains why Kiffin got the job, fwiw.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Orgeron too. That guy is apparently a recruiting monster (I mean, why else would anyone have played at Ole Miss?).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

recruiting is so weird, I never get how these hs kids' minds work

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Not that it's anything more than conjecture at this point, but -if- the SEC were to expand, I'd love to bring in Florida State and Clemson (both of which I'm sure are just waiting for the invitation, especially now that Jimbo Fisher is at the helm in Tallahassee). The other thing is the Texas schools. I think A&M would rather go south, but the Longhorns might rather go west, but they both know they have to travel together. I'd welcome them both, but be sad if it meant a Texas/Alabama game every single season. RISKY!

Ideally, I'd love for Georgia Tech to stop it already with the sour grapes and come back to the SEC, but I'm pretty sure that will never ever happen in a zillion years.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

there is no room for the sec in the bigpac32

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link

So it's going down right now. Colorado just announced their move.

If this plays out as predicted, it's conceivable that Oklahoma and Nebraska could meet in the Rose Bowl Game every other year or so. HA! That's bizarre.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link

@AaronRodgers12: Looking forward to getting my PAC-10 championship ring from the ‘04 season.

YES

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

love it

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Auburn might get the nat'l title too, yes?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

If the Pac-10 goes to 16 teams, I'd like to listen in on the meetings when they tell Arizona they're being put in the Pac-16 East with Texas et al.

yeah I mean this can be considered a step towards a playoff in the sense that it gets rid of the 'we must keep the rose bowl sacred' argument.

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

so, chance that pc's career decision had nothing to do with sanctions has dropped to what... less than 0%?

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 19:31 (fourteen years ago) link

boise state to mountain west

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 18:06 (fourteen years ago) link

So I guess the WAC can finally officially rename themselves THE WACK, right?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

actually in a weird way I think it might be good for them in the long-term - or, I guess it's 'not entirely bad'

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean yeah it sucks to lose what has become a consistently good football team, but now other WAC-y teams get a chance in their own conference?

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, it definitely levels the field now in terms of competitiveness.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i LOVE Nebraska to the Big Ten, just love it!!! Gives Big Blue a chance to kick their ass continually over the bullshit "split" championship. And keep it right there, 12 teams is perfect, it solves the 11 imbalance since Penn State.

if they really REALLY wanna keep going, and make conferences or whatever, then it's Missouri and Syracuse to make 14 and nobody else

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 07:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Missouri is the stepchild with attitude problems that no one wants. I heard that even if the Big XII didn't crumble, they were going to kick out Missouri anyway.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 June 2010 07:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I love Missouri. feisty, always somewhat competitive school (when they are not freakingly right in there for the National Championship), I like their competitiveness in the last decade or so, they have been great. So, BRING THEM IN :)

it makes total sense ... MAP-WISE ... then the 'Big-Ten' really does OWN the Midwest/Great-Plains

But, with just Missouri, it is unbalanced again, with 13 teams. That's why I say --- go for SYRACUSE next!!! holy crap, that would be awesome, especially when you think about the Basketball implications over the Football implications

plus if they did that -- Nebraska, Syracuse, Missouri -- you would create this 14 team conference that would create a MASSIVE oil-spill like splotch across the entire Midwest and Great Lakes ... It looks like a BEAUTIFUL conference to me in theory.

The SEC would shudder in its boots :)

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 09:20 (fourteen years ago) link

[the whole preceding post was already pricing in Nebraska, just to make sure everyone is on the same page]

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 09:22 (fourteen years ago) link

so can someone explain to the layman why all these conference switches are happening all of a sudden?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 12 June 2010 13:33 (fourteen years ago) link

$ thing - bowls, tv rights (/possibility of own tv channel)

'all of a sudden' - a scramble started up for the choice schools...I know the pac10 has had its eye on colorado for a long time

iatee, Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

All of this conference shuffling has me actually excited for the college season for the first time in awhile.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Nothing really happens until 2012, though.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago) link

this year and schedules and shit must already be set, yeah? or is shit changing season? thatd be really crazy xp

johnny crunch, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh. :(

Well at least USC is fucked.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah tbh even if cal doesn't win a single game this season, watching usc is gonna be so worth it

iatee, Saturday, 12 June 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

it looks like a *lot* is up in the air w/ the conference shuffle?

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:53 (fourteen years ago) link

this supposed $17m a year payout to a ten team big 12 makes pretty much no sense, if you ask me

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 17:53 (fourteen years ago) link

like, schools are supposedly fleeing the big 12 because more money could be made elsewhere, and now all of a sudden the big 12 minus nebraska would be as profitable as the sec? idk

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

desperation move for sure

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

however, I'm not gonna overrate the intelligence of people in charge of any of these schools

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

it just doesn't make any sense -- i'm sure abc & espn execs are sitting in their offices right now like "wtf"

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago) link

kind of lol but mostly sad how nobody gives a shit about the other sports this is gonna affect

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

tru

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

well pretty much basketball cuz no one pays attention until the tourney -- no one pays attention to the other sports anyway

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

also kinda funny how texas is totally at the center of this - they could save the big 12 or make 1 of 3 other conferences very happy - but they are gonna be in a great position (money + the players) no matter *what* happens. if I were UT I'd prolly stay put and continue the "if we beat oklahoma and a bunch of so-so teams, we go to the national championship game" strategy. money isn't everything.

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

that gator looks stoned out of its mind

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

which is appropriate!
