i didnt really follow the dolphins so much this year so i cant speak on cameron really, but one thing i will say is that it's a loooot easier to nitpick when the onfield performance is so horrific. two guys i loved to rag on last year, jon gruden and jack del rio, are in the playoffs this year and are coaching some very good football teams. i still think gruden is garbage, but it's harder to argue with a straight face that he's the worst coach in football. bobby petrino is a guy who i could nitpick to death but without seeing what he would've done with the team given a couple years of growth, it's all just sorta... ehh. i dunno. i'm a little drunk. i just think all this peripheral stuff about a coach's, like, DEMEANOR only really comes up when their teams are tanking. cameron might have a lot of good qualities as a HC we dont know about. or mb he's str8 up garbage~

cankles, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 05:20 (sixteen years ago) link

i agree w/ cankles re: demeanor and motivational abilities and that whole gray area of stuff as fans we can only speculate on best. has cam made (or at least overseen) some suspect playcalls at various points this year? yeah. but shit, cleo has w/o a doubt improved over the season (past 2 games even!!), ginn is gradually making plays, jason allen is a viable starter now and he's gotten a decent haul out of chatman/booker etc.

i think romeo crennel is a pretty good example of a dude who has undoubtedly turned around his franchise for the better after a stretch of 3-4 (idk his term exactly) of shitty seasons (i actually called him the worst coach in football in some thread b4 the season). derrick anderson, winslow, edwards have all improved over the years to the point where they are all playing at pro bowl levels. NOT TO MENTION crennel has a pretty dialed-down "demeanor" liek ppl accuse of cam.

i think at the end of 3 years if cleo/beck, ronnie, ginn, j allen/other young players + whoever our next picks are don't make obvious improvement on the field then let cam go, but i think 3 years is the period for a coach. i don't doubt for a sec that cam knows his shit.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 December 2007 05:42 (sixteen years ago) link

and ppl down here like to rip on cam's personnel decisions i.e. saying ronnie might not be the starter @ the beginning of the year, not playing booker right away etc. and i find most of that to be complete bullshit in the sense that it took bledsoe to get hurt b4 we ever knew who brady was and that the same dude who picked ryan leaf also traded vick for LT/brees etc. etc. etc. etc.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 December 2007 05:47 (sixteen years ago) link

profootballtalk.com has posted a rumor about Parcells stealing Crennel away from Cleveland. That's goofy even for those guys.

Ok, I'm awake now to get ready for the Fins game. I pray to God we're not wasting another trip!

I pray to God we're not wasting another trip!

You wasted another trip. Cam/Cam's on the clock.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Yep, we did waste another trip. But I didn't dislike it as much this time--now that we had our one win out of the way I was just happy to see some touchdowns.

The Bungle fans were talking a LOT of smack for a team that was 6-9 coming in. That would have been like me talking shit to Raiders fans last year.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:50 (sixteen years ago) link

The Bungle fans were talking a LOT of smack for a team that was 6-9 coming in.

i think when one team has five more wins than the other in a 16 game season you can safely talk all the smack you want.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:20 (sixteen years ago) link

No, I really don't think anybody that can't be bothered to win more games than it loses in a season should be talking smack to anybody, even if they are worse. It's basically saying "You suck! We suck too, but you just suck more!"

I sure as hell wasn't talking trash to anybody last year.

Especially at such an easy target as Miami. Dolphin fans are harsher on the team than any opponent could ever hope to be.

disappointed dolphins didnt go winless - i wanted that symmetry

jhøshea, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

our coach might be fired too. I'm not usually for first year firings but Cam often looked like he needed smelling salts on the sideline.

I'm tired of us hiring people without NFL coaching experience or a track record. Yes, some of them do go on to be successful, but I think at this stage we need someone we know the book on a little bit.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

the coach that lost to you guys got fired

Yeah. But he was a genius about 5 seasons ago, yes? He was also pretty good last year, when the Ravens went 13-3. But I see why he was fired.

And, BJO, Cam/Cam in all likelihood will be fired this week. And he should be.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Cam's just going to keep making excuses not to meet up with Parcells. He'll sell his television, cell phone, and cancel his newspaper subscription.

He'll even show up during the draft and wonder why somebody else is there with a lapel that says "Coach".

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:20 (sixteen years ago) link

No. He'll face Parcells, and soon. If what I've seen of him is an indication, he'll mostly blame injuries, an overestimated talent pool on the Dolphins, and admit some bland level of accountability for his game managment mistakes.

None of it will be enough. He'll be fired.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

The injury card pisses me off because Miami wasn't playing well BEFORE the onslaught of injuries began.

Granted, the injuries in the secondary began right as the season opened, but Miami's offense was pretty healthy until Trent went down, then it became a snowball effect.

And Miami wasn't stopping the run WITH Zach in the lineup.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:25 (sixteen years ago) link

idk dudes i'd rather givie cam 2 more years tbh than bring in another unproven coach and hope his 3 year plan works esp. if that dude is the offensive line coach of the cowboys

i mean when does this cycle of coaches being here for 1-2 years going to stop. if one miraculously goes 6-10 in his first year??? bcuz when parcells inevitably leaves in 3 years after we go 8-8 where does that leave us and our sopranos-extra of a coach??

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:28 (sixteen years ago) link

A: where we are right now

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't want to bring in another unproven coach either but I don't see how Cam is any better.

He looked overwhelmed out there on the sidelines and he telegraphed his playcalls frequently. Some will say out of necessity, I will say that's being a chickenshit coach.

and fyi I'm usually not a proponent of firing a coach in his first year but I didn't see much of an improvement throughout the year and the team seemed to be playing well below its talent level at the beginning of the year.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:29 (sixteen years ago) link

aka, revisionists have demonized Saban, but that 2005 was a team that played above its talent level, and even at 3-7 I supported him before the improbable 6 game winning streak.

Not downplaying what Saban did was wrong but it's amazing that he was suddenly the worst coach of all time after he left.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:30 (sixteen years ago) link

what is going to be soprano's excuse when we go 3-13 next year??? shit just happens in the nfl where sometimes the quality of the coach doesn't matter all that much. cam was probably the most sought after OC when he was in san diego and we're going to kick him out after a year? idk

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:37 (sixteen years ago) link

all i'm saying is:

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:37 (sixteen years ago) link

BASICALLY WHAT ALL MY CONVOLUTED POSTS WANT TO SAY IS:
someone has to be here for 2-3 minimum to turn this thing around. why not let it be cam?? who has better credentials that's out there right now?? a great sought-after coordinator? that's what cam was!!! are they going to fire him bcuz they don't like his 'demeanor'?? plenty of stoic coaches are successful.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 01:42 (sixteen years ago) link

what is going to be soprano's excuse when we go 3-13 next year???

He won't have an excuse. This is a bad team. Parcells knows it. The Dolphins management -- finally -- knows and accepts it. These diminished (and realistic) expectations lay the groundwork for a bad 2008/2009 campaign without the coach needing to be fired afterward.

But Cam/Cam needs to go. First, he either misapprehended or wasn't forthcoming about the Dolphins talent level (he likely did this so he could tell the Dolphins' owner that Miami was close to being a playoff team (something Wayne wanted to hear from the last several coaches)). Second, he bet wrong on Trent Green. Now, mistakes of that sort can be made, but Green ultimately got hurt with exactly the type of injury that made him a question mark in the offseason. Third, he mismanaged the clock and personnel (e.g., keeping Lorenzo Booker on the sidelines for most of the season). Fourth, he doesn't have the respect of his players (from what I read in the Herald) and doesn't inspire confidence (from what I've seen at his post-game conferences).

I understand the desire for coaching and philosophical stabiliy, I really do. But the value you get from such stabilty has to be weighed against the damage done by having the wrong coach. Cam/Cam has to go.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 03:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Denny Green is out there. Just sayin'.

i obviously have not really kept up with dude's career but i know tony sparano a little bit from his unh days and he was always pretty respected and liked in ct for running a really good program. clearly, that doesnt mean jack about if he'd be a good HC in mia or atl.

first time I read that I thoughtit said Tony Soprano

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 4 January 2008 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm torn. On the one hand, I agree that Miami needs help everywhere, which cuts in favor of having more picks (not just the overall No. 1). On the other hand, I'm not sure I trust the team's management to make good decisions in the draft, which cuts in favor of selecting the overall No. 1, who may be more of a sure thing (or, put differently, making the draft mistake-proof, even for possibly inept management).

Out of curiosity, has your opinion changed any now that we have Ireland/Parcells? (Not saying it has to, but just curious...)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

mel kiper: on crack?

• The Miami Dolphins need help on defense and Bill Parcells is a defensive-minded coach, so DT Glenn Dorsey would be the logical pick. And while the Dolphins could listen to trade offers for the top pick, there has not been a lot of movement in the top 10 in recent drafts. Why did Adrian Peterson slip to No. 7 last year? Because teams weren't willing to trade up knowing they would have to part with draft picks and pay more money for the higher pick. Also for Miami, QB Matt Ryan has to be in the discussion because the Dolphins may not be sold on John Beck (a second-round pick last year). Miami needs quarterback help and Ryan is going to be a top-five pick. Ryan might be too good to pass up, and he's a better prospect than Beck was when he came out of BYU last year. (Ryan is the only QB I am projecting will go in the first round).

chicago kevin, Friday, 25 January 2008 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I dunno, I don't think anything he said is without merit.

He's oft been critical of Miami's draft picks in the past too....

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

although I would prefer we trade the top pick, yes.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Quarterbacks often go too high in the draft and this seems like a down year for the position. The best bet would be to trade the picks if you can.

leavethecapital, Saturday, 26 January 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Yea, I mean, I'm not sure we really got a good idea of Beck last year. A rookie QB with no reliable Tight End to throw to, an inexperienced #1 wide receiver, aging #2 receiver, non-existent #3, depleted running back depth, and an offensive line that is extremely weak on the left side, on a horrible team? C'monnnnnnnn!

Although I think we've finally got something going at center with Satele. If Miami can finally build a solid offensive line through the draft over time...the bad QB curse will end.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i was assuming that whomever put the idea of the 'phins taking ryan with the #1 pick did so as a smoke screen to try to entice atlanta into trading for the top pick.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 26 January 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I REALLLLLY don't see Miami taking a QB at #1. Parcells built Romo out of an undrafted QB. Unless he sees a real dud in Beck, I think he knows what other holes to fill on the team.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago) link

You have to trade the pick, but I can see Parcells taking Dorsey. he loves guys like that

Bill Magill, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

you have to TRY to trade the pick but no one wants the #1 pick anymore.

chicago kevin, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Dallas will take it, I bet. Jones wants McFadden, and he's dumb enough to do it.
