― TOMBOT, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:59 (fifteen years ago) link
ok so it's been said, and it's true, that the salary cap and the revenue sharing agreement and and and and that's all basically socialism for the rich (and as a fan I would say a great example, best socialism ever, unless you're a player, but that's another thread) but if we take that as a given, and we also take my experience in the military, which is totally socialist - al is seriously that guy who is so, so awfully bad, but you're not allowed to fire him - he's the fucking sergeant who has actually probably gotten like ten people killed but the best possible outcome is to give him orders to some places where he can, at worst, kill maybe three more people, and even then at least you can blame something else for the bodies whenever they show up.
Jesus christ the talent that dies with this team. I'm actually glad Asomugha got franchised last year- maybe in 2009 he'll play for a team that has a fucking chance at the playoffs, like he deserves.
― TOMBOT, Friday, 5 December 2008 08:07 (fifteen years ago) link
I mean, I don't think that has anything to do with socialism for the rich. Al just your average senile owner of a private company. That's the free market at its finest. I mean, maybe he'd spend more if not for the salary cap, but I doubt it. I actually think the salary cap pressures Al to spend more than he'd actually like.
I just think that at least if you're a Raider you know that the boss wants to win, and just doesn't know how to do it. He loves his players and is really good to guys who used to play there (unless you get on his bad side, aka Marcus Allen). Cardinals can't say that, nor have they played in a Super Bowl in the '00s like that Raiders have.

dude the raiders' problem isnt spending money - idk if you noticed but they gave obscene, unprecedented contracts to d-hall, tommy kelly and javon walker, even tho nobody was competing for the services of these players. they'd be a lot better off if davis was a cheapskate!
― cankles, Saturday, 6 December 2008 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link
Al hasn't always been so quick to spend money. His choice to do so last summer was seen as a sort of "put up or shut up" thing for Kiffin, even though he didn't give Kiffin the players Kiffin wanted, or give him the waiver wire guys Kiffin wanted for the sake of depth.
But anyway, now they have among the least cap room in all of football:
26. Oakland $6.4 million27. Baltimore $4.7 million28. New York Jets $4.5 million29. Detroit $4.4 million30. Dallas $3.9 million31. Pittsburgh $1.3 million32. Arizona $310,078

Raiders owner Al Davis was hospitalized over the weekend after twisting his knee in a fall, a team source confirmed Thursday. KPIX originally reported the accident Davis, 79, had at the team hotel in San Diego before the Dec. 4 game against the Chargers. He attended the game, returned home with the team that night and was soon admitted to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley. He was treated for fluid in his injured knee. Davis has been hobbled for several years with a quadriceps injury.

Kind of tough to say, they might have gotten KC and could have maybe made that second game with SD interesting.
Gradkowski played in the 2nd half of the Jets game. Didn't put up any points, but he actually completed some passes.
Still probably at best they could be 6-6.

Gradkowski is a totally decent game-managing qb, and might have hung around Tampa longer if Gruden didn't so enjoy shuffling his qb stable like a deck of cards. I'm glad he's finding (some moderate) success as a starter again.

Now that Mike Leach(notes) has been fired by Texas Tech, and Al Davis is probably a few days away from whipping out the ol’ overhead projector for the inevitable press conference to fire Tom Cable, has anyone considered the notion that this could be a professional marriage made in heaven? That’s right – Mike Leach as the next coach of the Raiders, and I am being completely serious. Think about it: The Raiders have an abysmal offense and are trying to salvage the career of a former No. 1 overall draft pick, quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Leach is an innovative offensive mind who has made prolific passers out of far less talented QBs. Davis is a big-time meddler, but he has also worked best with headstrong head coaches who aren’t afraid to be their own men. Leach, as recent events confirm, would fit that mold. Further, as Leach proved this week, he, too, is not afraid to lawyer up, and both will soon be intimately familiar with the nuances of the term ”with cause.” Finally, Leach has a well-documented thing for pirates. Can you imagine how much he’d fun he’d have in an eye patch?

i had this debate the other day, during that eagles-cowboys debacle, because an announcer (poss buck) said something that intimated that one of these teams might just FOLD had they lost the game. long debate, in that if the eagles folded, would it be the panthers or the giants who would then be put in the playoffs (decision: panthers) etc etc but really, shouldn't it be the raiders?
answer is no, it should be the cardinals. but i thought this fit this thread.

Gannon like many Raider fans is gloomy about the status of the Silver & Black. And since he has emotional ties to a team that he helped build into a winner, why not help out in any capacity? The former league MVP offered his services to the troubled franchise and their bust to be passer and they not only denied it, they piled on impudence to the genuine offer.Said Gannon on Sirius Blitz on Satellite radio: “You know, it’s amazing. You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it. … I’m not looking for work. I have plenty of jobs that keep me busy. … People think I’m looking for a job. I’ve been offered jobs to get into coaching and to get into management. I have no interest in doing it.”Then Al Davis’ crony John Herrera piled on stating, “It’s Rich that needs the help.”He continued, “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. [Al] Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

It seemed like it was over. It seemed Antonio Brown was willing to move forward without his old Schutt AiR Advantage helmet after predictably losing his grievance against the NFL. It seemed Brown was ready to start the season after participating in pregame drills with the Oakland Raiders on Thursday. But things are never over with Antonio Brown, apparently. An exasperated Raiders general manager Mike Mayock announced to the media on Sunday that Brown was holding out of practice because of the helmet issue. Mayock did not seem happy about the situation.Mayock’s full statement:You all know that AB is not here today. So here’s the bottom line. He’s upset about the helmet issue. We have supported that. We appreciate that, OK? But at this point, we’ve pretty much exhausted all avenues of relief. So, from our perspective, it’s time for him to be all in or all out. OK? So we’re hoping he’s back soon. We’ve got 89 guys busting their tails. We are really excited about where this franchise is going. And we hope AB’s going to be a big part of it starting Week 1 against Denver. End of story, no questions. And just like that, the Antonio Brown helmet story that has dominated the Raiders’ preseason has been given new life.
