i obviously have not really kept up with dude's career but i know tony sparano a little bit from his unh days and he was always pretty respected and liked in ct for running a really good program. clearly, that doesnt mean jack about if he'd be a good HC in mia or atl.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I agree that Miami needs help everywhere, which cuts in favor of having more picks (not just the overall No. 1). On the other hand, I'm not sure I trust the team's management to make good decisions in the draft, which cuts in favor of selecting the overall No. 1, who may be more of a sure thing (or, put differently, making the draft mistake-proof, even for possibly inept management).
Out of curiosity, has your opinion changed any now that we have Ireland/Parcells? (Not saying it has to, but just curious...)
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link
mel kiper: on crack?
• The Miami Dolphins need help on defense and Bill Parcells is a defensive-minded coach, so DT Glenn Dorsey would be the logical pick. And while the Dolphins could listen to trade offers for the top pick, there has not been a lot of movement in the top 10 in recent drafts. Why did Adrian Peterson slip to No. 7 last year? Because teams weren't willing to trade up knowing they would have to part with draft picks and pay more money for the higher pick. Also for Miami, QB Matt Ryan has to be in the discussion because the Dolphins may not be sold on John Beck (a second-round pick last year). Miami needs quarterback help and Ryan is going to be a top-five pick. Ryan might be too good to pass up, and he's a better prospect than Beck was when he came out of BYU last year. (Ryan is the only QB I am projecting will go in the first round).

I dunno, I don't think anything he said is without merit.
He's oft been critical of Miami's draft picks in the past too....
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link
although I would prefer we trade the top pick, yes.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link
Quarterbacks often go too high in the draft and this seems like a down year for the position. The best bet would be to trade the picks if you can.
― leavethecapital, Saturday, 26 January 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link
Yea, I mean, I'm not sure we really got a good idea of Beck last year. A rookie QB with no reliable Tight End to throw to, an inexperienced #1 wide receiver, aging #2 receiver, non-existent #3, depleted running back depth, and an offensive line that is extremely weak on the left side, on a horrible team? C'monnnnnnnn!
Although I think we've finally got something going at center with Satele. If Miami can finally build a solid offensive line through the draft over time...the bad QB curse will end.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link
i was assuming that whomever put the idea of the 'phins taking ryan with the #1 pick did so as a smoke screen to try to entice atlanta into trading for the top pick.
― chicago kevin, Saturday, 26 January 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link
I REALLLLLY don't see Miami taking a QB at #1. Parcells built Romo out of an undrafted QB. Unless he sees a real dud in Beck, I think he knows what other holes to fill on the team.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 January 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago) link
You have to trade the pick, but I can see Parcells taking Dorsey. he loves guys like that
― Bill Magill, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link
you have to TRY to trade the pick but no one wants the #1 pick anymore.
― chicago kevin, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Dallas will take it, I bet. Jones wants McFadden, and he's dumb enough to do it.
― Bill Magill, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link
jerry jones, yeah, i was trying to think the other day who might be stupid enough to trade for the first pick besides al davis. jones probably would. i think snyder has been burned enough times that when his football people tell him not to touch the stove he defers to them.
― chicago kevin, Monday, 28 January 2008 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link
Plus, Snyder doesn't really covet draft picks, he likes to build through ludicrously overpriced free agent signings.

For once a Dolphin fan favorite doesn't go to the Patriots, AND goes to the other conference. I'm happy for him though, although I wish his Dolphins career didn't have to end on such a down note. At least he might have one more chance at winning something.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 24 February 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link
I was kind of looking forward to seeing the Pats sign him. Then they would have had a great linebacking corps-for 1995. Seriously, Bruschi,Vrabel, Seau and the Thomas brothers? Their games would have had to been shown on ESPN Classic.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:33 (sixteen years ago) link
Better, but still bleh.
Once the running game settles in, we may be able to win a few that we shouldn't have, but God is it disappointing to give up two gimme TDs to Favre without really making him work for them.

and not just when i said this
i'm really serious about the dolphins beating the ravens. remember i'm saying this. the ravens are really, really awful. this year, they've beat the jets by 7, the cards by 3, san fran by 2 and st. louis before they were healthy by 19. we really could win the game (it's at home btw).

Whew! Only temporary:
As of today the Dolphins no longer play at Dolphin Stadium. Now they (and the Marlins, and UM) play at LandShark Stadium, named after a beer that hardly is the pride of the Anheuser-Busch stable. Don't get used to LandShark, though. The name-change is for the remainder of 2009 only and it'll be back to Dolphin Stadium for the next Super Bowl, unless they pimp the name to a new corporate sponsor by then. How bizarre is that!? A temporary name change. It's part of a major tie-in with Jimmy Buffett and his Margaritaville conglomerate

Miami's post-Marino QB curse.
Quarterbacks we've passed up in drafts this decade: Aaron Rogers; Matt Ryan; Drew Brees; Tom Brady.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 2 October 2009 09:00 (fifteen years ago) link
Don't take the Brady thing so hard. 30 other teams passed him over too.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 October 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link
Same thing with Brees. And you know what? If they'd been drafted into the Dolphins organization they wouldn't have grown up to be Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Friday, 2 October 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link
^^this
and really, you can blame the brees thing on saban & that management for deciding to sign culpepper instead. rogers is good but the packers wrs are far, far more talented than whatever the dolphins have now. matt ryan is great of course but jake long was a great pick.
remember daniel that when the dolphins drafted ted ginn, there was an insane outcry from people down there about how they passed up on brady quinn. so you know, if they would've went with 'conventional wisdom' they would've been just as screwed as they are now (probably even more so considering that ginn, regardless of how he is perceived in miami, is the team's #1 receiver and a generally good player overall imo [doesn't help that he's a speedy deep threat on a team whose quarterback was incapable of throwing a ball over like 40 yds])

You're hopeful for Henne?
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 2 October 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link
yes i think so. i mean, the guy was never next level at michigan but this current staff really likes him & i think they are to be trusted (altho to be fair their track record on player personnel - pennington aside, altho that was luck probably - is kind of up in the air still). he's been off the field enough to step right in and give the phins a chance to win every week i think. plus he's got all the physical stuff right.
