Four of the incompletions were judged to be dropped and nine more were defended -- broken up, batted or intercepted -- by the Patriots. Both of those last two figures were season highs for Stafford. Seven of those defended passes were intended for receiver Calvin Johnson or Golden Tate. (Stafford targeted each of them with 10 passes and completed four apiece.)
from ESPN piece on stafford's performance highlighting bang up job pats pass defense did. not too shabby.

jamie collins is so good. the whole linebacking corps is looking nice right now but him, hightower and mayo (assuming he can ever get thru a season anymore) are str8 elite dudes.

naw don't get carried away with those penalties. he is being told to play like that. and he's effective otherwise, a big drop off to the next guy at cb. also, some of those penalties, feeling where a receiver is is not a gddamn PI call, officials just too ready to flag his number, just like that fumble hit last week that they admitted was bs.

he has so many penalties man

the pi was a bad call, and i wholeheartedly supported the unnecessary roughness (both the act and the ensuing call).

collins is becoming a unique player in the league with his speed and timing. i love watching him blow shit up.

i'm never on this thread but i should probably post this early candidate for interview of the year: http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2015/01/06/a_gronking_to_remember_an_interview_with_lacey_noonan_author_of_rob_gronkowski.html

Lacey Noonan gives a good interview! My highlight:
I remember reading about how Kafka didn't want the "bug" on the cover of Metamorphosis. Gronk's spike impacts in a mystical, non-physical realm of Leigh's being. Although, quickly scanning my Word doc, I found that I wrote "between her butt-cheeks." So, jury's still out on that one.

good post by matt chatham on the eligibility plays: http://www.footballbyfootball.com/column/hot-mess-nfl-rulebook-strikes-again
It bears mentioning that the place in the game of football where disguising the eligible receivers is most prevalent is punt team. Punt teams fairly regularly change up eligibility as they enter the field of play, and like to screw with opponents for potential punt fakes by changing the typical balance in the line. What makes this extra juicy is that both Belichick and Harbaugh are former special teams coaches.
Every team in the NFL has what we referred to as a "safe" call...a presnap zone check that makes sure there are no mistakes if something bizarre happens because the defense just guards areas and not specific people. Who's eligible at that point doesn't really matter. The Ravens have a rookie middle linebacker, I'm not sure if that contributed to them not checking into a better call. But the players on the field have to put the defense in the best position possible. The NFL isn't college, there's plenty of onfield autonomy to make the necessary changes when the other team is trying to screw with you.
