i'm never on this thread but i should probably post this early candidate for interview of the year: http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2015/01/06/a_gronking_to_remember_an_interview_with_lacey_noonan_author_of_rob_gronkowski.html

Lacey Noonan gives a good interview! My highlight:

I remember reading about how Kafka didn't want the "bug" on the cover of Metamorphosis. Gronk's spike impacts in a mystical, non-physical realm of Leigh's being. Although, quickly scanning my Word doc, I found that I wrote "between her butt-cheeks." So, jury's still out on that one.

watching Terrell Suggs smugly talk about Tom Brady. ugh, I don't think I could hate a team more than the Baltimore Ravens.

good post by matt chatham on the eligibility plays: http://www.footballbyfootball.com/column/hot-mess-nfl-rulebook-strikes-again

It bears mentioning that the place in the game of football where disguising the eligible receivers is most prevalent is punt team. Punt teams fairly regularly change up eligibility as they enter the field of play, and like to screw with opponents for potential punt fakes by changing the typical balance in the line. What makes this extra juicy is that both Belichick and Harbaugh are former special teams coaches.

Every team in the NFL has what we referred to as a "safe" call...a presnap zone check that makes sure there are no mistakes if something bizarre happens because the defense just guards areas and not specific people. Who's eligible at that point doesn't really matter. The Ravens have a rookie middle linebacker, I'm not sure if that contributed to them not checking into a better call. But the players on the field have to put the defense in the best position possible. The NFL isn't college, there's plenty of onfield autonomy to make the necessary changes when the other team is trying to screw with you.

Patriots trade with Eagles

By Mike Rodak | April 30, 2011 3:32:06 PM PDT
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots have traded their sixth-round selection (193rd overall) to the Eagles for the Eagles' sixth-round selection (194th overall).

No other selections were involved in the trade, which moves the Patriots back one spot in the draft.

, Monday, 2 February 2015 13:44 (ten years ago)

i was on the phone with my early '90s roommate -- a low-bore Pats fan -- at the end of the game, and couldn't explain to him why they are such a loathed franchise outside of N.E. ("They haven't won in 10 years!" was his protest.) Any good columns on this recently?

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:55 (ten years ago)

idk why i should explain this to anyone but: 2007, spygate, "running up the score," 18-1, been loathed ever since.

call all destroyer, Monday, 2 February 2015 18:02 (ten years ago)

i mean their unprecedented degree of success in the salary cap era would result in them being loathed for one reason or another, but 2007 is really what it comes down to in terms of when and why the tide turned.
