wow. really surprising considering bb's long history of letting good defensive backs walk away. i still hope they make a serious play to retain revis, and at this point nothing would surprise me.

i love revis island
― rational_skull_collector_69 (lag∞n), Monday, 9 March 2015 05:49 (nine years ago) link
i think there's still room to get revis in too. i could have gone either way on this deal but if you're going to take care of a player with a contract like that mccourty is not a bad choice at all.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 11:51 (nine years ago) link
yeah mccourty is a pretty safe place to stack those chips. i think they are up against or over the cap already so i assumed they could only take one of the two but i guess never discount contract numbers magic. still, i will be surprised, it does look like crazy money is out there for revis if he wants it.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 March 2015 12:04 (nine years ago) link
I hope so. I just spent an hour trying to make this work, but I realized I don’t understand the NFL cap. At all.
― Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 9 March 2015 12:50 (nine years ago) link
yeah as i understand it it's a matter of being freed up from a couple other commitments (mayo, wilfork, etc.) plus the fact that mccourty's new contract is very likely backloaded and may carry only a 4-5 million hit this year.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 13:49 (nine years ago) link
i'm normally under the impression that teams can finagle the cap at any point to get any player they want (i.e. the saints being way over the cap last season but somehow signing jairus byrd to the richest contract ever for a safety), it's more of a case of if they want to potentially fuck themselves down the road

they've paid plenty of guys at market rates tho, vince got paid, solder got paid, mankins got paid. i guess two in one offseason is a bigger deal.

seems crazy but jerod mayo may be the sacrificial lamb in all of this

i think that's extremely likely
― call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 14:26 (nine years ago) link
if the pats cuts mayo while the jets' marquee resigning is giving david harris $15m guaranteed for 2 years, that will be a neat encapsulation of the variance between the two organizations

i guess this guy grissom is reputedly a bizarre reach as well...
― Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 2 May 2015 03:19 (nine years ago) link
he has no position so bill loves him:
Grissom briefly moved to tight end in 2012 before shifting back to defensive end. “No, we’re not trying to make him a tight end, but his workout as a tight end is about as good of a tight end workout as we saw all year,” Belichick said. “I mean, this guy can run, he can catch. If you didn’t know he didn’t play tight end, you would look at that workout and say ‘that’s a pretty good tight end.'”

― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 11 May 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link
whole lot of locals on my twitter suddenly saying they care about how this punishment is unfair compared to the initial ray rice ruling (which is true, the proportions are fucked, NFL's a mess obviously) when there was not a peep to be heard from said locals when the ray rice shit was actually happening
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link
definitely seems disproportionate. I think by now I've accepted that he probably did it but 4 games? that's only one less than Albert Haynesworth got for stomping on a guy's chest, and more than another player got recently for child endangerment.
I'd have been fine with it just being a fine and loss of draft pick for the team. and the Wells report stopped short of full confidence that Brady was implicated.
oh well, helps my team out....but not liking the precedent here. I'm fairly sure if the NFL looked closer for these smaller types of competitive cheats they could find it across the other 31 teams.

so probable footballs .5 psi under is way more detrimental to the league than any of the guys in domestic violence incidents
is this decision based off the public outrage about the whole #deflategate story - outrage that was generated by leaks from the NFL during the investigation?
sigh
― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Monday, 11 May 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link
it is inherently a steep punishment (the fine, a pick and maybe one game tops would be the most extreme i'd think of imo, they broke the rule but the rule is relatively minor) and even more when you compare it with rice, but goodell had to in order to make ppl forget for a little bit how long he's been in robert kraft's pocket
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 22:08 (nine years ago) link
I have a Dolphin's fan friend who is mad the suspensions weren't further reaching and steeper and comparing this to Bountygate.
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 11 May 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link
kinda understandable - the bountygate penalties were really steep especially considering how spurious a fair amount of the accusations levied against the saints ended up being
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link
the penalty shd be the pats balls get over inflated all season, an eye for an eye

losing 33% of one's season over deflated balls kinda seems ridic. I mean did the ball deflation also prevent the Colts from playing pass defense ?
