yeah aaron rodgers was talking about that, how most qb's like it at the bottom of the range but he actually likes the ball overinflated a little. my guess is brady was an asshole about how he wanted his balls and maybe the staff got overzealous or more likely just sloppy. after all the leaks it turned out only one ball was outside the parameters and considering everything else w/ the investigation and who's handling it i'd be skeptical of even that. don't blame brady for not turning over his phone, goodell' office leaks like crazy and has a tamed press to do it's bidding (espn was ranting yesterday about how disgraceful it was brady was taking the nfl to court) and goodell refused to turn over his phone to the guy he hand picked to investigate his handling of the ray rice incident.

hey this is a pro level organization. _if_ the balls were deflated below spec by the deflator, it's because brady told them to do it, and they knew if they fucked it up they would lose their bullshit volunteer vanity nfl gigs.

they would not likely fuck up brady's instructions for ball pressure, he was on them like stink on shit, and that is why they talked so much crap about him behind his back.
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link
and brady is not being an asshole to them, he is PRO, and knows how he needs his equipment to feel. for the same reason a pro acquaintance of mine makes and sells a tire pressure gauge accurate to .5 psi (for $150 per!). for him, once he dials in a course, the difference between 21 psi and 22 psi is apparent to him, and to other elite guys. equipment actually matters, no matter how clowny the lackeys are who are responsible.

you are really overestimating the caliber of person that lugs the balls to the field on gameday.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link
i believe they were intentionally underinflated, but none of my points here really go to whether they were or not- only that the balls were in a condition specified by brady.

then the patriots need to step their games up. you see how absurd that statement looks, right?

Hunt3r, you really seem to have an agenda here. as an aside, with your perspective as a fan of afc playoff also-rans the denver broncos, what do you think might've motivated fellow playoff failures the indianapolis colts and the baltimore ravens to set this shitstorm in motion for the patriots?
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link
frogbs, subsequent review has shown that maybe 1, probably none of the balls were unreasonably under the the inflation range. if you're interested in the actual truth, the data is too garbage to have any confidence either way. if you're interested in what can be proven, it doesn't look great for the nfl.
there is a circumstantial case for the balls being tampered with after the officials' inspection. i think you can believe what you want on that. there is no kind of case that the balls were under the legal inflation range. could the balls have been deflated but still within range? some of the other details actually corroborate that possibility. all in all tho, it is a super thin basis for the nfl to go ham on, however you slice it.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:07 (nine years ago) link
there is no kind of case that the balls were under the legal inflation - i should qualify this with demonstrably or similar

no the league leaked 11 of 12 during super bowl week and then iirc the actual report said 'or just one' and it may have been one the league subbed out. despite hunter's protestations that these guys are pros and god knows professional sports organizations tend to favor science over their guts or experience or what feels right i'm skeptical that these guys underinflate these balls w/ any kind of calibration beyond 'eh that should do it'. based on the ballboys texts and that at most 11 of 12 balls had the same psi i feel comfortable w/ that. in any case i don't think brady and greg hardy deserve the same suspension.
― balls, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link
they probably did /something/ but by now there's no possible excuse for this to still be a thing, the penalties should've been reduced bc they were absurd
that said, it's pretty amusing to see a corrupt robber-baron turned team owner more or less publicly buy a clearly corrupt/inept NFL commissioner nearly a decade ago and then /completely/ publicly complain that he's corrupt

I find it hard to believe that Brady wasn't doing something that at least was skirting the rules a bit, but it's no outrage because teams do this kind of thing all the time across every sport. Pitchers are constantly scuffing balls, NBA and soccer players are flopping to draw fouls, baseball teams are stealing signs or finding ways to spy on each other, it happens, it gets punished, but the idea of losing 1/4th of the season AND a draft pick AND a million bucks is so insanely absurd that I can't help but love how it's blown up on the NFL
― frogbs, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:39 (nine years ago) link
yeah as far as 'cheating' goes this is definitely more in line w/ vaseline on the glove or flopping than something like the niners or twolves salary cap shenanigans. then again so is pumping in crowd noise (except that's also by far stupider)(esp if it's already clearly a lost season) and the nfl cracks down on that so this isn't out of line w/ the nfl is incredibly stupid and random when it comes to discipline. i tried to quit this sport last fall (falcons sucked so should've been easy) but by spring was so far back in i was reading mock drafts. love the game but everything surrounding it is so toxic. seriously guys give hoops a chance. i say this as a guy who swore for years the nba would never be as good as it was w/ bird/magic/young jordan - basketball has never been better than it is right now.

ok i cannot resist b/c this is the first time i saw these...here are two footnotes from the wells report:
Footnote 11 page 35The guidelines stated that: “Prior to each game, a team‟s equipment manager will prepare 12 footballs to be used for non-kicking downs. The footballs will have the prior approval of the team‟s quarterback, who can briefly test them the preceding week, but the balls cannot be used during midweek or pregame practice sessions. These footballs will be delivered to the officials‟ locker room two hours and 15 minutes prior to game time. The Referee will insure that they are properly inflated and give final approval for their use. Game balls approved for a previous game can be submitted, provided they meet the standards of a new ball. The home team will prepare another 12 balls in the event of inclement weather or other reasons.” Under the current guidelines, a referee also may reject footballs in the course of a game if he determines that they are in “unsatisfactory condition.”
Footnote 21 page 41During our investigation, we also obtained information concerning the football preparation process used by the Colts. Colts personnel informed us that, like the Patriots, they take new footballs and rub them with a wet or warm towel to remove the outer preservative, followed by brushing with the same brushes provided by Wilson. Footballs are then used during practice, with the expectation that normal wear and tear on the footballs, and their interaction with players‟ sweat, will help break in the balls. Sean Sullivan, the Colts Equipment Manager, explained that, in his view, the best way to soften the leather is for the footballs to interact with sweat during practice and then get baked in the sun. The Colts repeat the brushing and baking process, and continue to practice with the footballs as they are broken in, until they reach a certain point, when they will be set aside for potential game use. The footballs will be inflated to a pressure between 12.9 and 13.05 psi prior to being inspected by Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who typically selects his game balls two days before each game. The designated balls are placed into ball bags and kept locked in the Colts equipment room until their pressure is checked again shortly before being delivered to the game officials.

I think it's entirely possible that Brady was involved. I don't think the Wells Report proved it whatsoever (he "probably" did it, not good enough). as much as it benefits my Fins to have him out four games, as a fan of the game, it gives me a bad taste for this arbitrary punishment for something so silly (that they didn't even prove).

From the salon article polyphonic linked:
"The digital trail our phones leave behind long outlive the physical device itself, and the league could have potentially tracked down the information in a number of ways..."
The article fails to mention what those "number of ways" would be, but rather mentions a number of places the data might be stored, which is different, because the NFL is not a law enforcement agency and has no subpoena power. So I'm not sure whether they would have any legal means to acquire such data, even though it would undoubtedly still be stored somewhere.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:22 (nine years ago) link
the point is that the destruction of the phone is not relevant to them getting that data.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:26 (nine years ago) link
Which the article doesn't actually establish. If the phone, with data, had been surrendered for inspection, the data would certainly have been placed in the NFL's possession. The bare fact that the data still exists doesn't prove the NFL could access it now by any means in their power.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 19:10 (nine years ago) link
brady needs to allow the nfl access to the data or be compelled to do so, regardless of where it's stored.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link
Brady can reasonably say that he is not in possession of the data. He doesn't control the servers where it would now be stored. Anyway, the NFL decided it had enough evidence to draw a conclusion without the phone data.
Now, if Brady were to sue in court over the suspension, perhaps the NFL could pursue the phone data through discovery. So far, Brady has only pursued his appeal under the collective bargaining agreement, as far as I know.

some good quotes here. judge seems to believe it is likely that deflation occurred (no mention of allowed range tho) and that brady was at least aware of it. skeptical of anything more than that, in particular that the nfl has any actual evidence of brady's involvement or of any 'conspiracy'. nfl response shows they have literally nothing: we think deflation occurred, brady is qb, QED.

nfl response shows they have literally nothing
I think its more accurate to say that the nfl has circumstantial evidence, but no direct evidence. Given what has been established as fact, one may deduce a limited number of scenarios that fit those facts. A few of those scenarios exculpate Brady, but most would not.
This kind of reasoning would not be sufficient in a criminal trial, but the NFL isn't putting Brady in prison, either. afaics, they are claiming only that a preponderance of the evidence supports their conclusion and that's good enough.
The only real question here is whether the league's actions are allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. If they are allowed, then the 4-game suspension sticks. If not, then he plays.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 17:23 (nine years ago) link
surprisingly little on process tho, really just allowing the sides to restate their respective cases, which for the nfl is just that cba = rog can do what he wants, which hasn't worked before but doesn't mean it won't work now.
