i think it started on the internet but ime it's made several inroads to more mainstream media (e.g. sports talk radio) and started to filter down to the fanbase as a whole, and it's not going to be easy to put it back in the box. the visibility of something like a catch rule that is unenforceable even with replay isn't lost on anyone, and i feel like collectively there is just a lot of throwing up of hands about that problem. idk maybe there are purists out there for whom bad football actually detracts from their enjoyment. i would love to hear from them!
i don't think there's (much) more bad football these days although roster construction favoring young players plus lack of practice time is going to continue to gnaw.

i agree, i meant internet as a starting point, but it has definitely colored football talk across media now. it comes with the ever finer granularity of analysis imo - more of each game is being watched, and with more discernment. when 32 teams are all getting real exposure, you realize that most of them are part- or all the way garbage, and always have been. it's a weird game that's hard to play and complex, which increases the opportunities for players and officials to look bad. and the complexity demands specialization, which in turn means no one gets a break for being on the field and doing anything subpar, unlike maybe a shooting guard who can't play defense, or a pitcher who can't hit.
barnwell has a thing about disproving the recurring claims over the years that football is getting worse that i recall being generally convincing, with appropriate caveats for the rigor of his analysis.
catch rule situation is a str8 disgrace tho, no excuses there.

this is v interesting. article is mostly balanced on the cause of the seahawks' implosion, although the primary sources are the players who are blaming carroll/the FO/wilson to an extent. but...kind of sounds like the players in question are assholes and probably the real problem? would be interested in other ppl's takes, not convinced of my read but several of the player quotes rubbed me the wrong way.
― Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 September 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link
richard sherman and russell wilson both seem insufferable in very different ways. the rest of it is noise, seattle had their 5-year window like just about every elite roster does. the idea that people were asked to treat wilson differently at a time when he hadn't really earned that right rings true but this is all about age, injuries, and salaries.

i’m like the lateadopter of my likely friends to do this, but it doesnt seem to be emotionally fun for me at this point. my opinion of ncaa football universe chased me out of that like 20 years ago and it has survived so...

the number of chuckle-y, eyerolling pieces i've seen today that are like "lol no one knows what a catch is, the officiating is terrible, both of these teams sucked, yay football is back!" seems even higher than usual. does this have analogues in other sports? i'm struggling to think of any.
an entire subgenre of baseball writing is essentially this, although the lol/yay stuff comes from the kornheiser/stephen a. types rather than the strict baseball ppl.
the complaints are generally that strikeouts and home runs are way up (and thus there are fewer balls in play) and that half the league isn't really trying to win. neither is wrong

The Browns were +5 in takeaways today. Since the Browns returned to the NFL, teams with a turnover margin of +5 or better in a game are 132-4-1. The Browns are responsible for two of those losses and the tie.

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals have parted ways with longtime coach Marvin Lewis, who endorsed his friend Hue Jackson as his replacement.Lewis had one season remaining on a contract extension he signed last year. In a statement, the team said the decision was mutual.

Marvin Lewis is a decent coach, the guy seems to have a knack for finding and developing talent. AFC South is pretty brutal conference and having to get over both the Steelers and Ravens both is a bigger task than most divisions in football. They won the division a couple of times going like 10-6 with the Ravens and Steelers going like 9-7... A couple of the playoff losses were totally fluky as they lost Palmer in the first series of the first playoff game and his knee was always a bit bonky after that play. His best team lost Dalton down the stretch run and had that insane loss to the Steelers with a backup QB a couple years ago.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 00:39 (five years ago) link
Yeah there’s definitely an element of luck to that, much as there was when McCarthy was like 0-6 in OT games (several of which were in the playoffs). He’s probably the best guy on the market, right?
― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 01:18 (five years ago) link
marvin lewis may have been as successful as was possible for a team controlled by mike brown, but what talent did he find or develop? not sure i'm willing to credit him with turning the undrafted burfict into a . . . notable player
the ravens and steelers were ~good~ during lewis' tenure, but neither was by any means the patriots, and god knows the browns were the browns
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 01:35 (five years ago) link
Steelers made the playoffs 10 times since 05, went to 3 Superbowls and won 2.Ravens made the playoffs 9 times since '05 and won a Superbowl.
That's pretty good. Outside the Pats, I think the only division that has won 3 SB would be NFC East (Giants x2, Eagles last year)... NFC South has had Saints, Falcons and Panthers be in the playoffs with some regularity.
Bengals have had a good run of drafting on defense. Cincy was able to keep a good part of that core together for a while too. Some of these guys have had really long careers...
Geno AtkinsCarlos DunlapDomata PekoFrostee RuckerRey MaualugaLeon HallJonathan Joseph
Lewis isn't quite Marty Schottenheimer, but he has had middling success.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 03:20 (five years ago) link
well, the steelers made the playoffs that many times because they went 26-8 against his bengals
anyway, worlds will collide when the steelers hire him to run their defense next year

Interesting stat: the six highest-paid QBs - Rodgers, Ryan, Cousins, Stafford, Garrappolo (lol), and Carr (double lol) - all missed the playoffs this year. Goff, Trubisky, Mahomes, Dak, Foles, and Lamar Jackson are all in. Maybe the "QB is everything" era is over.
