Breaking: Robert Saleh says they fear a torn Achilles for Rodgers. “It’s not good.” MRI tomorrow. They expect it to confirm the tear. #Jets— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) September 12, 2023
really cruel outcome since this team really did look good. who knows maybe they'll coax Brady out of retirement

Zach Wilson will be the #Jets starter the rest of the season, Robert Saleh said.— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) September 12, 2023
after all those moves (including getting a bunch of Packers), doing Hard Knocks and everything else, the dude might not even complete a single pass for them this year, idk if I've ever seen anything like this in sports

I mean what's he supposed to say, this is your backup QB and the guy who's at least gonna start a couple games, gotta show a little confidence
but yea this team is too good for Wilson, who I'm reasonably certain is just an awful quarterback. wonder who the options even are, maybe Jameis? I know it won't happen but if Brady came out of retirement it would be the funniest thing ever and I'd be rooting hard for them to win the Super Bowl

is there a more idiotic rule in pro sports than the touchback
― frogbs, Friday, 15 September 2023 01:32 (one year ago) link
I thought you couldn't fumble forward and play is dead at spot of fumble? Ooops
― octobeard, Friday, 15 September 2023 01:58 (one year ago) link
all I know is if a touchback is possible they will always rule it a touchback because they just love that rule
can't think of another rule in any sport that makes so many people go "what? that's so fucking stupid" at once
― frogbs, Friday, 15 September 2023 02:11 (one year ago) link
Eh, I think it just should emphasize that protecting the ball is important and on the 1 yard line, even more so. The offense has so many gimme rules that makes it easy, this is one that it don't.
Pretty much you fumble it into the end zone, yer fucted. At least the way the rule is written, if you recover the fumble, it goes back to where it happened. That was changed by the old famous Stabler/Caspar "holy roller" play.
― earlnash, Friday, 15 September 2023 18:14 (one year ago) link
sure but square that with the fact that the ball only needs to slightly cross the plane for a TD which is why so many players dive for it like that when they get close. having such a thin line between touchdown and turnover feels weird to me, I don't really like the idea of turnovers where the other team doesn't even have to touch the ball. it should be like a 15 yard penalty or something similar to what happens when the kickoff is out of bounds
Vikings got a fun of favorable calls (and non-calls) to keep them in it, kinda hard to overcome 4 fumbles though
― frogbs, Friday, 15 September 2023 18:34 (one year ago) link
I don't feel too bad for the Vikes on that because Jefferson didn't need to make that risky extension, they could have had an easy goal line play next down.
I understand the argument against making it a touchback, otoh it happens pretty infrequently and fuck fumblers

i guess joe burrow sucks now
― mookieproof, Sunday, 17 September 2023 20:05 (one year ago) link
Burrow did not play great, but they also had 2-3 penalties on big plays that kinda broke them today as much as the one bad interception when they were closing to score. I thought they need to run the ball more today. They could not do bupkis last week against Cleveland.

1989 Steelers reference made me think and it was the age of Bubby Brister as QB in Pittsburgh.
That was back in the era of Billy Joe Tolliver and Bobby Hebert (sounds cooler said than typed).
― earlnash, Sunday, 17 September 2023 23:50 (one year ago) link
that team's quarterbacks, altogether (but largely bubby), had 10 touchdown passes vs 13 interceptions. in 16 games
an entirely different era

Reading more on those 89 Steelers, they lost their first two games by a combined score of 92-10 and then turned around and finished 9-7. Pretty good improvement, they beat the Browns in second game after getting beat week one 51-0.
That was Rod Woodson's rookie year. He was so good, probably the best football player from Indiana ever.

This is the most conservative play calling on either side of the ball I've ever seen from Belichick
― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 02:33 (one year ago) link
haha when rodgers ruptured his achilles last week every single steelers guy on twitter was like THAT'S NOT AS BAD AS WHEN ROD WOODSON TORE HIS ACL IN 1995 WEEK ONE
― mookieproof, Monday, 18 September 2023 02:36 (one year ago) link
This Patriots team is not very good. That's been true in recent years w Cam Newton but this is the first year I have thought that with Jones.
They're not BAD. But they're very vanilla, little swagger, and very conservative and close to the vest.
Belichick punting on 4th and 4 from the opposing 40 shocked me, like... that's usually "go for it" 9 times out of 10 with him

Cowboys' Jerry Jones: Working to increase minority ownership in NFL
no, actually he just said some random shit about a lawsuit. he's only 'working' to make people forget he was in the background of the most racist photo of the 20th century
