Eh, I think it just should emphasize that protecting the ball is important and on the 1 yard line, even more so. The offense has so many gimme rules that makes it easy, this is one that it don't.
Pretty much you fumble it into the end zone, yer fucted. At least the way the rule is written, if you recover the fumble, it goes back to where it happened. That was changed by the old famous Stabler/Caspar "holy roller" play.
― earlnash, Friday, 15 September 2023 18:14 (one year ago) link
sure but square that with the fact that the ball only needs to slightly cross the plane for a TD which is why so many players dive for it like that when they get close. having such a thin line between touchdown and turnover feels weird to me, I don't really like the idea of turnovers where the other team doesn't even have to touch the ball. it should be like a 15 yard penalty or something similar to what happens when the kickoff is out of bounds
Vikings got a fun of favorable calls (and non-calls) to keep them in it, kinda hard to overcome 4 fumbles though
― frogbs, Friday, 15 September 2023 18:34 (one year ago) link
I don't feel too bad for the Vikes on that because Jefferson didn't need to make that risky extension, they could have had an easy goal line play next down.
I understand the argument against making it a touchback, otoh it happens pretty infrequently and fuck fumblers

i guess joe burrow sucks now
― mookieproof, Sunday, 17 September 2023 20:05 (one year ago) link
Burrow did not play great, but they also had 2-3 penalties on big plays that kinda broke them today as much as the one bad interception when they were closing to score. I thought they need to run the ball more today. They could not do bupkis last week against Cleveland.

Watching Daniel Jones attempt to show he is a $40M/year quarterback is extremely satisfying.

1989 Steelers reference made me think and it was the age of Bubby Brister as QB in Pittsburgh.
That was back in the era of Billy Joe Tolliver and Bobby Hebert (sounds cooler said than typed).
― earlnash, Sunday, 17 September 2023 23:50 (one year ago) link
that team's quarterbacks, altogether (but largely bubby), had 10 touchdown passes vs 13 interceptions. in 16 games
an entirely different era
― mookieproof, Monday, 18 September 2023 00:09 (one year ago) link
In those days you had to score touchdowns uphill, both ways, in the snow

fastest dude on the Dolphins might actually be their coach god damn he was truckin it into the tunnel at half

Reading more on those 89 Steelers, they lost their first two games by a combined score of 92-10 and then turned around and finished 9-7. Pretty good improvement, they beat the Browns in second game after getting beat week one 51-0.
That was Rod Woodson's rookie year. He was so good, probably the best football player from Indiana ever.
― earlnash, Monday, 18 September 2023 02:07 (one year ago) link
This is the most conservative play calling on either side of the ball I've ever seen from Belichick
― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 02:33 (one year ago) link
haha when rodgers ruptured his achilles last week every single steelers guy on twitter was like THAT'S NOT AS BAD AS WHEN ROD WOODSON TORE HIS ACL IN 1995 WEEK ONE
― mookieproof, Monday, 18 September 2023 02:36 (one year ago) link
This Patriots team is not very good. That's been true in recent years w Cam Newton but this is the first year I have thought that with Jones.
They're not BAD. But they're very vanilla, little swagger, and very conservative and close to the vest.
Belichick punting on 4th and 4 from the opposing 40 shocked me, like... that's usually "go for it" 9 times out of 10 with him

Cowboys' Jerry Jones: Working to increase minority ownership in NFL
no, actually he just said some random shit about a lawsuit. he's only 'working' to make people forget he was in the background of the most racist photo of the 20th century
let me know what he says when 'a minority' has $8 billion and wants to buy a team
― mookieproof, Monday, 18 September 2023 03:02 (one year ago) link
well they did some pretty cool shit on that drive
― frogbs, Monday, 18 September 2023 03:04 (one year ago) link

― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 03:15 (one year ago) link

― frogbs, Monday, 18 September 2023 03:23 (one year ago) link
Nah he was short and I thought so in real time. Was actually shocked at the original spot.
Credit to the Patriots, they were resilient and Mac played a pretty inspired second half
― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 03:25 (one year ago) link
I wouldn't have been mad if they had let it stand, necessarily
fuck that

― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 03:45 (one year ago) link
would be nice to believe an 0-2 team is a contender
― ciderpress, Monday, 18 September 2023 03:50 (one year ago) link
They're mostly 0-2 because they've committed 7 turnovers in two games.
I just can't see that persisting all season long.
Their defense though needs work.
Idk Sam Fran is one I'm pretty confident in the NFC atm
― Make the chats AI (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 September 2023 03:53 (one year ago) link
mac jones actually looked pretty good last night! or maybe i am just way too conditioned to jets' "quarterback play"
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Monday, 18 September 2023 14:24 (one year ago) link
Somehow, the Falcons are now 2-0. I went to yesterday's game, they were incredibly frustrating through three quarters then pulled a win out of their collective ass. I think they have the pieces, but play calling is atrocious.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 18 September 2023 14:26 (one year ago) link
I was at a bar of Packers fans who were actually kind of incredulous that the back of the end zone TD was overruled. in real time I thought he was probably out but on replay he clearly looked in
frustrating game for GB too, Ridder probably should've been picked off 3-4 times but we kept dropping them. but they dropped a pretty bad pass by Love at the end too. all told Jordan Love actually looks pretty solid
― frogbs, Monday, 18 September 2023 14:32 (one year ago) link
Yeah, overruling that TD was pretty outrageous. I think that actually lit a fire under Atlanta. Not surprisingly, the crowd was probably close to half Packers fans.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 18 September 2023 14:35 (one year ago) link
Bijon Robinson looked like a total beast (though I will point out it's not particularly difficult to run all over the GB defense). he also helped one of our players up after a play...kinda irritating when you're trying hard to dislike someone and he turns out to be a nice guy

also gotta say Watson not really playing like a top paid quarterback, with Chubb out he's gonna have to be better than this
― frogbs, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 13:24 (one year ago) link
Watson had some good moments but Pittsburgh had him constantly bottled up.

he hasn't really had a particularly impressive game since the suspension and is getting sacked a ton
― frogbs, Tuesday, 19 September 2023 16:08 (one year ago) link
He doesn't strike me as a quarterback who has a vision of the whole field or the ability to keep his head, both of which are essential to greatness imho.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 19 September 2023 16:10 (one year ago) link
In contrast to, say, Trevor Lawrence, who has all the makings of an elite QB.
