"Garcia doesn't lose this one"

Harrington back under center for Lions

Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit Lions quarterback Joey Harrington will start Sunday's game at Minnesota, as Jeff Garcia attempts to fully recover from a broken leg he suffered in the preseason.

Harrington started the first five games of the season, completing only 53 percent of his passes for 798 yards with four touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Garcia took over the reins as starter two weeks ago at Cleveland and led the team to a 13-10 victory. He also started last week's loss versus Chicago, throwing an overtime interception to Bears cornerback Charles Tillman that was returned for a game-winning touchdown.

Head coach Steve Mariucci said that Harrington took the news of a quarterback switch two weeks ago well, and it may have relaxed the signal-caller.

"I am hoping maybe it was good for him to watch Jeff play and get away from it for a little bit," said Mariucci. "Maybe a load off of his shoulders and off his mind and I think he is a little bit rejuvenated and I think he has practiced well."

Whether his opportunity as a starter is just for this Sunday or a longer-term decision, Harrington knows he has to be prepared to play each week.

"I'm not going to quit and I'm not going into the tank. If this is just a one week thing until Jeff gets healthy then so be it and if it's for the rest of the season, great," said Harrington. "No matter the situation I'm going to be ready to play."

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 4 November 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Forget 9640. It's 58207. The password should remain the same.

Welcome to Yahoo! Sports Pro Football Pick'em.

You have created the Private Group called PUNT WASHING A HAT and the Pick Set called Pleasant Pains in that group. To allow other people to join this group send them the Group ID# (58207) and the Password (roffle). Remember, it is the Group ID#, not the group name, that other people must use to join your group.

You are now ready to participate in Pro Football Pick'em. Your goal is to earn more points than other people by selecting the winner of each of this year's regular season games.

Thanks for joining. Good luck.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Sunday, 6 November 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I just realized that we are picking winners, not picking against the spread. Fortunately, there weren't many sizeable spreads this week (thank you, NFL parity), so my picks wouldn't have been any different.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 November 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Paul Maguire on defending Santana Moss: "You gotta tackle that guy."

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

There's an option for spreads on the pick 'em, but with only bragging rights on the line, there didn't seem to be much reason for it.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 7 November 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me or does Brad Johnson look like he is throwing a shot put when he passes? That guy's form is fugly, but he is a pretty good guy to have as your #2 at this point.

earlnash, Monday, 7 November 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Hmm last place despite my BOLD prediction of a Brown's victory.

I can't believe the Steelers won. I think Green Bay had the ball for 55 minutes in that game.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Man I did so crap.

DTDs come in handy that way.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I just looked it up:

Time of possession-

GREEN BAY: 59:59
PITTSBURGH: 00:01

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 7 November 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

well that settles that.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

any Indy doubters left?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Excellent game. Not that I have any great love for the Colts, but there is no team more loathsome than the Patriots.

Mingus Dew (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Fuck.

The Pats had NO defense.
Indy's defense didn't look too hot against a real offense though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Indy's def has been playing better than it actually is, no doubt about that in my mind. Doesn't really matter though, with all the weapons they have on offense. If their defense ends up only about average, that's probably more than enough.

Mingus Dew (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Indys pass rush is definitely for real and they are good at forcing turnovers. They had a pretty good pass rush and got a bunch of turnovers last year. They are way better against the run this year and with playing Brackett and June full time at linebacker a whole lot faster, but they sometimes get a bit over agressive and get caught by screens and trap running plays. The thing that the pundits haven't really pointed out is how many games the Colts starters have missed, especially in the secondary. Indy has been pretty banged up and are only now starting to get healthy.

I don't think they will be a complete shut'em down D like the Bears or B-more a few years ago, but I think they are getting into the top 10, which with their offense should be enough. If they get lucky in the draft and get a monster LB like Derrick Brooks, they could be dominating.

earlnash, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the Colts NOT sack Brady twice and force a coupla turnovers? Was I watching something else?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

they did sack flutie (wtf!?!? he's brady's backup?!?!) at the end of the game, but i only watched the 2nd half.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh and I would've ejected Belichick for the stunt he pulled after the Colts' last touchdown. It's one thing for players to do douchey, supposed-to-get-a-penalty stunts to throw off the other team, but a coach? That's just pathetic desperation, get off my field.

hahahaha xpost we were stunned by Flutie's appearance as well. They definitely sacked Brady once--maybe the second one I'm thinking of is the Flutie one, but I don't think so. I think, though, that perhaps the second sack was not counted as a sack. BECAUSE BRADY FUMBLED THE BALL, WHOOPS.

I think the Colts are going to have to go ahead and play God and mini-Ditka in order to get some people to give them the credit they deserve, that they ARE an undefeated team and it's not by some fluke of scheduling miracles.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I thought Flutie trying to flop for a personal foul was hilarious. It's football, not basketball, old dude!

But still, as long as there are players out there older than me in football and baseball, I can't do the "I'M OLD AND I HEAR WOLVES" routine too seriously.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Dude I think it broke Tom's heart to see Flutie playing for a team he hates. How old is dude now? Like 63?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

He's not a day over 57. Still younger than Vinnie, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

God and mini-Ditka

Eli's not even the best QB in the NFC East yet!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Clearly I was referring to the Broncos.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

No, I don't know what that means either.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Even if the Colts win it all this season, there will still be those gonads that will still say Brady is better because he has THREE rings, not one. Never mind that NE winning it all was predicated on having the best and most opportunistic defense of the past few years.

earlnash, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Flutie flopping looked like some move you'd see in a Ben Stiller movie.

Was Dungy being classy or cowardly by not challenging that Brown TD?

Blunt and Baker on top of the Pick 'Em standings. The South may rise again after all.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I think the Colts are going to have to go ahead and play God and mini-Ditka in order to get some people to give them the credit they deserve, that they ARE an undefeated team and it's not by some fluke of scheduling miracles.

We've been over this. Almost every team they've played has been shit. Then they conveniently got a bye week before the most important game of their season. It's just about the most unimpressive 8-0 ever. In the second half they'll be tested a lot more.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

most unimpressive 8-0 ever >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 7-1

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

By the end of the third quarter, I was so happy I was practically dropping it like it's hot.

Dan (When The Pimp's In The Crib, Ma) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Did you guys know that the Blue Jays shoulda won the World Series????

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

In other words, blount OTM on the other thread.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

That's not what he was saying over there, you guys. Now cut that out!

While you can only beat the teams you play, here's the "gauntlet" the Colts have run to get to 8-0:

Sun 9/11 at Baltimore (2-6) W 24-7
Sun 9/18 Jacksonville (5-3) W 10-3
Sun 9/25 Cleveland (3-5) W 13-6
Sun 10/2 at Tennessee (2-7) W 31-10
Sun 10/9 at San Francisco (2-6) W 28-3
Mon 10/17 St. Louis (4-4) W 45-28
Sun 10/23 at Houston (1-7) W 38-20
Mon 11/7 at New England (4-4) W 40-21

So, yeah, Barry might have a point. If the Colts wern't winning these games outright (excepting the speed bumps in Jacksonville & Cleveland). Getting the NFC West is a godsend. Watch out, tho - another "real" opponent's coming up in 2 weeks: CINCY.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

We somehow had this long thread about last weeks games and didn't talk about the big call in the Chiefs game running the ball to win the game on the last play instead of kicking a field goal to tie.

Vermeil said afterwards that they had a 50/50 chance to win the toss and get the ball back, then they would have to drive back down the field to get into field goal position to win the game. If they lost the toss, the Raiders had been getting good return yardage, he was afraid they would just get into a field goal range and win the game without the Chiefs having an opportunity to win.

It worked out.

earlnash, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

RE: Easy colts schedule; The NY Post picked the Ravens to win the superbowl, The Jags and the Pats were in similar contention at season's start (Jags stillare) and St. Louis and the Niners didn't look like slouches then either. I think anybody who would've said five months ago that the Colts were a cakewalk away from an 8-0 with that schedule would've gotten some funny looks.

Hindsight is handy.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Um ... a week hasn't gone by in the last couple of months that a talking head on ESPN didn't say that the Colts had a reasonable chance of being 7-0 heading into the game against the Pats.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, once they got past Jacksonville. I'm suggesting from the START of the season, not once various chinks in everyones armor started showing.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah at the beginning of the season it was widely assumed/understood that indy was the second best team in the league, that the top 3 was pats, colts, steelers and then a real dropoff and since the colts didn't play the steelers before they played the pats that meant there was a real shot the colts would still be undefeated come that monday night SHOWDOWN (in the preseason i remember alot of people anticipating (anticipeyton wakka wakka) BOTH teams being undefeated). if they were playing the nfc east or south this year their schedule's tougher yeah but they caught a break and caught the west this year. the only really strong team in the afc this year they're not playing is theoretically the broncos, who the colts would paste i'm sure.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 10 November 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

The NY Post picked the Ravens to win the Superbowl?

Did the Post also pick the Mariners to win the World Series?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I thought it was kind of an offbeat pick myself.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Unless they were supplying Kyle Boller w/ some skill &/or receivers &/or PEDs, I have no idea what they were thinking.
