Maybe the Chargers are just terrible, but I think this year's Raiders team has finally gotten their shit together.

re: Miami, has there ever been an instance of a team's quality improving so drastically after a head coach (and d-coordinator) being fired before? I expected that due to the cloud over the team's head, they were going to come out hot and passionate *last* week, but I didn't think they would basically outscore two teams 82-36! like Spiralli says above, Philbin's gotta be wincing every week now.
Suh haters can stfu now, he was all over the field.
been watching the Fins since I was 8 years old and haven't seen the team take a humongous shit on an opponent like that, ever. fitting their first win versus the Texans (0-7 previous) came with an interim coach.
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 26 October 2015 14:13 (ten years ago)
we'll see if it is sustained but the one thing that stands out to me is how with basically the same ppl around him lamar miller suddenly went from 0.1 yards per carry to about 50.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 October 2015 15:33 (ten years ago)
on defense you maybe say there was a timing thing with wake getting healthy but the overall change is too drastic for that alone
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 October 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
yeah. it's too early to tell if "oh, Miami's a contender again", and some fans are like "c'mon guys, it's just Tennessee and Houston", but Miami couldn't put away a mediocre Bills team at home, the Jaguars on the road - they looked like they couldn't hang with *anybody* on defense!
Wake getting healthy helps, but the d-line collectively looks like it's winning the battle at the line each time now - they've simplified Coyle's schemes and allowed them to make plays.
offensively I"m just kinda laughing at Tannehill's gaudy numbers cos while he did have a really good game, most of the numbers are YAC yesterday. Landry's first TD was gorgeous.
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 26 October 2015 15:41 (ten years ago)
the pick six off of the TE's hands was sort of like "hey guys, I"m throwing you a bone here" from God.
Miami's success is probably a combination of better idea what to do with the talent and schedule so far. I think it was a feature with Jaws was showing how they are running a much more trad power run/play action pass game instead of putting Tannehill into a shotgun and spreading out things. I do sometimes think coaches get obsessed with system and often try to run things that really don't fit their personnel. A lot of people were talking up Miami in the preseason, I thought even some talking head like maybe Gruden picked them to not only win the AFC east but perhaps go to the Superbowl.
I think part of the Colts and Luck's offensive problems stem some from what they try to do offense. Pep Hamilton seems to be from that Mike Martz school of being obsessed with the long ball. That stuff is the offensive equivalent to a defense that does all sorts of all out blitzes. The thing is that it's high risk as much as high reward and can lead to a bunch of picks as much as big plays. With the shakey o-line the Colts have, Luck often times does not really have ample time to wait for the speed guys to get open 10-15 yards down field and then Luck starts to improvise. And right now, I think his shoulder might be causing some of those misfires on those mid to long passes.

Well the AFC South is freakin' terrible, 3-4 Indy is massively favored to win it even though they are kind of a trainwreck. Let's see how they come out vs. New England this week - they'll be hungry as hell for this one much like Indianapolis was

prob the right way for the game to end
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 03:32 (ten years ago)
crazy ending, Cards had it put away yet kept botching things and giving Baltimore a way out. not even gonna blame the dude for going OOB on the 1st down that should've all but iced it (as I'm guessing that's 100% instinct) but calling that pass play was just bizarre. I mean I know Flacco's got a big arm but going 75 yards in 1:15 with no timeouts is really hard vs. a good defense like that. Ravens gotta be the best 1-6 team I've ever seen, they've been in all their games to the end, and just think if Steelers had a kicker they'd be 0-7. Not that I'm losing sleep over it.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 03:41 (ten years ago)
bmore are playing better than 1-6 but like 3-4 not 6-1. they don't look like a playoff team so at least they're getting a higher draft pick than they should.
