i was not a sports fan the first time around. i'm going to adopt them and jumping on board.
Go Rams.

st louis and the state of missouri still owe ~90 million in bonds for the 20 year old stadium the rams are abandoning.

tide seems to be turning, more privatily funded construction recently/munisipalities refusing to foot the bill, but it def was standard for a while
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)
Sometimes the stadium projects that don't accept public financing wind up costing the city just as much in the long-run. For example:
For years now, the Giants have billed AT&T Park as "the first privately financed ballpark in Major League Baseball since 1962." This is true if you don't count an estimated $25 million in municipal fire, police and garbage services; $33 million for the land itself, donated by the city; $83 million in property-tax exemptions
This doesn't seem like a big deal now because SF is awash with cash and the Giants are perennial winners. But there are a lot of ways for the teams to take advantage.

the Cincinnati stadium deal was really bad
http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704461304576216330349497852
On top of paying for the stadium, Hamilton County granted the Bengals generous lease terms. It agreed to pick up nearly all operating and capital improvement costs—and to foot the bill for high-tech bells and whistles that have yet to be invented, like a "holographic replay machine."

the proposal for the inglewood stadium is allegedly privately financed, but has a bunch of tax cuts baked in. but the best part is that NFL has decided that its entitled to fucking SALES TAX revenue generated within the stadium for itself which inglewood was hoping to take to off-set the other breaks.
― carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 21:32 (nine years ago)
@Alex_FlanaganNFL has framework of a stadium deal between the rams/chargers. Chargers vetting it now and barring anything unforeseen, plan on going to LA

i saw the vikes play at the metrodome, in p good seats, and it was so fucking boring --- the commercial breaks are so much worse when you're not even seeing the commercials --- everyone just stops playing for a couple minutes and it doesn't make any sense

― nomar, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:40 (nine years ago)
going to a game is like
- dan snyder charges you for a license, a seat, parking and the right to cross an eight-lane highway- you are surrounded by 70000 drunk and unpleasantly aggressive ppl (this seems particular to football; not sure if it's the tailgating or the nature of football itself)- there's like 20 minutes of action -- probably at the other end of the field -- in between timeouts, and you can't see anywhere near the shit you can see on tv- show me your tits at gate d- two hours getting out of the parking lot
plus odds are your team sucks or its best player got carted off. i don't need to be immersed in that
― mookieproof, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:43 (nine years ago)

― lag∞n, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:47 (nine years ago)
Tailgating is fun. I've been to a couple college games without tickets and just hung out in the parking lot.
I like going to the ballpark for baseball games but even with that sport the price seems insane for what you get. Football is even worse. Best way to go is if you end up with free corp comp tickets somehow, which is how I saw most of the NBA games I went to see.
On a similar but related note, San Antonio Raiders would be very weird. I guess locals could mix and match their Spurs gear with the Raiders though.
― earlnash, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:49 (nine years ago)
well, they can't do military flyovers in basketball
but they do have lakersbro
― mookieproof, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:49 (nine years ago)
I've been to two football games in my life and they both sucked. I can't even imagine what a huge NFL game is like where you sit 1000 feet away from nowhere.
― pplains, Thursday, 14 January 2016 01:51 (nine years ago)
Basketball games where you get a glimpse of the court as you make your way from the concourse into the arena and the excitement is bouncing off the walls is 1100x better... and I can't stand basketball.

Live basketball sucks unless you live in a sports town with a contender. I used to go to Magic games all the time and it had the atmosphere of a damp fart.
P sure Warriors games are a blast sure....

i wld attend p much any basketball game bad atmosphere or no but im hoops mad m8
kinda intrigued by the sociological aspects of this tbh
your town has had no team for 20 years and now two show up; who do you root for? maybe some fans' parents were in love with vince ferragamo, maybe some are from southerly areas that looked to the chargers. they both wear blue and yellow!
probably most will be choices as half-assed as bee ok's

hockey's great in person but sucks on TV. Pretty much the exact opposite of football.
Trivia answer on the old sportstalk show once was Vince Ferragamo and our host went into this big spiel about how Ferragamo later went Hollywood and became the star of "The Hulk Man". I miss those days sometimes.
