Springtime for Nolan and San Francisco -- '06-'07 the 49ers thread

Ok, so it's the Fall for Adolf Nolan and Co., but all sources seem to say that wringing a fourth-rounder out of Barlow (a depreciation of only one round in 7 years, or, of about 4.3 draft places per year, not too shabby for a back who hasn't broken 3.4 Y/A as a fulltimer) is a good thing. But even though it's only been one year (where he doubled the 9ers' success), Nolan strikes me as a boring version of old school discipline coaches -- with fewer results.

More worries: Nolan's own draft picks -- Alex Smith (duh), "Hey" Vernon Davis, Manny Lawson, not as impact as I'd hoped. Davis might even turn out to be a project cos he is, in fact, kind of stupid. Not exactly Walsh-like talent evaluation, but of the less heralded rookies and 2nd year guys, Michael Robinson and Delanie Walker (TE who might get some playing time as a KICK RETURNER) are surprises, Frank "SF DOESN'T NEED BUSH" Gore is the Man if he can stay healthy.

he is, in fact, kind of stupid.

Unlike the typical Rhodes scholars who play wide receiver?

I fully agree with Barlow that Nolan is not the right kind of person to handle the GM duties for a team at this stage of his career, and maybe not ever. His talent evaluations are way too influenced by his personal interactions with players.

Davis seems to be football stupid, since everyone sez he hasn't learned the offense.

My initial feeling about Nolan is similar to yours -- there aren't a lot of other coaches (if any) who're their own GMs to my knowledge for good reason, but I'm willing to suspend final judgment for now.

I like Condi's face in the 60 minutes ad on that page; she feels 9ers pain.
