Big games -

Bengals vs. Steelers

The Bengals looked tough against the Browns, but it cost them quite a bit. David Pollack broke his freakin' neck and is gone for the year, starting center Rich Brahm hurt his knee and starting DB Dexter Jackson hurt his ankle. Jackson and Brahm are gone for the Steelers game and probably a few more weeks. TJ Housyermama is also banged up and still might not play either, so the Bengals will be down four starters.

Colts vs. Jaguars

I'll tell you this, they met last last year in week two and it was one of the most hard hitting and mean games I have seen in a few years. The second game was a bit tighter, but the Jags were not playing with Leftwich.

The Jags play Indy close and they need to beat the Colts to become a big time club. I think J-ville's D will come out firing and Mike Peterson has personal think against Indy as they would not give him big cash and he bolted a few years back.

I think it all comes down to Fred Taylor. That guy has had some big games against the Colts and if J-Ville can run, they will control the clock and with their D playing well, hold the Colts scoring down.

Other things I noticed-

I've seen parts of both of the Chargers games. They look really tough, but then again they took apart the Raiders and Titans. I'm curious to see what Phil Rivers would do against a top line defensive club.

The Titans are a fucking wreck and nothing works. Jeff Fisher is shark bait.

The football talking heads can talk all they want about Vick and his skills. The guy is a phenom, but everytime I see him break out running while carrying the ball away from his body and palming it, I cringe. That crap would make me crazy if I was a Falcons' fan.

I've seen parts of both Dallas games and I just don't get the hype at all, they look to me as a .500 club. Their D seemed better two years ago.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

oakland, then ten, then a bye week - it's like preseason never ended for the chargers.

indy looks like ass this year. i can't believe pps are ranking them in the top 5. they're in for a righteous cornholing if the jags manage to not lose their shit.

harbl (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

i would have rather the bye for the chargers came much later. They're so primed for their big week 4 and 5 matchups, I wish they could play them now.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think Baltimore goes 3-0 and Arizona begin to establish a playoff run as of week three as well. I couldn't be more pleased with the way having M

The Colts look less like ass and more just bored and out of sync. They'll win their division handily and may even (gasp) win a playoff game this year.

While I'm mourning the Titans, I'd also suggest that the early "say, are the Jets back?" hype is WAY early; I'd be surprised if they finish with a .500 record.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Tony Dungy tried to get his starters out of Sunday's blowout in the fourth quarter. Houston didn't give him a chance.

Actually, the Colts defense didn't give him a chance.

Many people outside the organization wondered why players like two-time MVP Peyton Manning and seven-time Pro Bowl receiver Marvin Harrison were still in the game until the end, so Dungy offered an explanation Monday.

"The problem we had is that we were up 30-3, so that was about four scores, and we substituted on defense and you'd like to hold them," he said. "But they went right down the field and scored, and then we're three scores up. So we told our guys one more drive."

The offense responded with another touchdown drive, to make it 37-10, and Dungy again sent out many of his defensive backups -- hoping to pull his offensive starters.

Again, though, Houston scored.

"The defense does the same thing, so the offense went back out there," Dungy said. "We'd like to have stopped them a couple of times, then gotten our substitutes out there on offense."

Manning again responded with a touchdown drive, to make it 43-17.

LOL @ playing against Houston

Dude I was laughing my fucking head off last night at NFL Network, they were doing this QB of the week thing and the choices were Peyton, Eli, and Drunk Grossman. And I was like, dude shouldn't Eli get +1 for, like, actually playing a team? I mean it's all well and good to support Peyton & Co kicking mutilated puppies, or the Bears pissing on Barry Sanders's grave, but srsly I mean the Eagles are actually kind of good.

The Colts offense looks fine. The running game will end up OK as Addai looks to have some speed and good hands in the passing game.

The Indy defense on the other hand is starting to revert to the way it was before last year. They got rolled by the run by the Giants and David "I can't help but get sacked" Carr went 22 for 26 last week. I think people have figured out whatever kind of stunts Dungy was doing last year to get that great pass rush and they still are really freaking small for an NFL D. The Colts need a big play making linebacker and/or a big truck lineman to fill the middle in the worse way.

I do think this could be J-Ville's year to win the division.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

the D was already crap, but without Freeney they're fuuuucked.

harbl (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

new england's offense didn't show up. i haven't seen them look so flaccid since the first buffalo game 3 or 4 years ago, the one after they cut lawyer milloy and got bounced 31-0.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

haha i was thinking of that game last night too, otto. i do think the new-look run-heavy pats are a lot of fun to watch, but i thought it was amazing that they could do such a good job of tiring out the defense and still not be able to close the deal. i love the d-line. seau got beat to the outside a bunch of times, first by bell and then by plummer, but i guess as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 he's not expected to make those kinds of plays anyway. hobbs suxxx imho.

harbl (Adrian Langston), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

i said somewhere on here in preseason that the pats biggest weakness on d was the lack of lateral speed of the linebackers. if teams can get to the corner they're picking up 6 yards at a time. i'm not ready to throw in the towel but someone in that receiving corps, be it caldwell or gabriel or jackson (and he's the guy i'm hoping does) needs to step up and assume a role of a reliable pair of hands who can stretch the d. troy brown can be lethal in the slot but god knows the team will be in trouble if he is being asked to lead the team in receptions.

pats d looked fine to me last night, room for improvement sure, but i'd take that effort every week. the offensive output was unacceptable. brady didn't have any spark, the running game wasn't getting anything (don't know how much dillon's prolonged absence had to do with that), and the wideouts weren't getting open until denver started giving them the underneath late in the fourth. plus f'ing gostkowski has had his last two fg's blocked.

at what point do you start to wonder why the pats are keeping themselves under the salary cap? if you're not going to use that money to sign vinatieri, the most clutch player at his position in the league and perhaps the history of the league, or branch, the franchise qb's favorite receiver, then what are you hoarding the money for? where are you going to spend it? on players you DON'T know can play in their scheme or not? why not spend on the proven commodity? the pats are allegedly now the 2nd most profitable franchise in the nfl behind washington, kraft made tons of money before he bought the team, why be cheap with the team? it's frustrating as a fan. especially as a fan who was around when they had no money to spend and no players to spend it on even if it was available to them. shit, i've paid money to see the likes of marc wilson qb the team and marion butts running the ball. those were dark days and i'd hate to see this group slide back into those days.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

ABOONTA BOONTA SOLO, OH OH OH!

harbl (Adrian Langston), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

well the f'ed up thing about the receivers is this: they didn't sign givens because he'd still be the #2 wide out beside branch and branch was due for a new contract next year. so if givens signed for a decent chunk of change it would be a fraction of what they were going to have to give branch as the #1 guy. so the theory was let givens go, draft someone, pay branch next year. but instead branch holds out and the pats decide, screw you we're not paying you either. so now the pats have no receivers.

and even that may not be a bad thing, they won the superbowl with david given and troy brown as the only wideouts catching anything. but the difference was the attitude, i think by short changing the players at every given turn (milloy, law, mcginnest, ted washington, givens, vinatieri, branch, etc.) i don't think the players feel like they're playing for anything anymore. they had a definite identity as a team and that seems to have been replaced by the attitude that they're parts of a machine, if one doesn't fit management will grab another off the shelf and insert it in it's place.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

the end of the game last night, wtf, right? one minute left, down by ten: kick the field goal, moran

i dunno, it was on the dirt again and gostkowski had blown his last two. they drafted him because he has a much stronger leg than vinatieri so i was thinking they'd try to get it back and even if it was a 50+ yard fg, they'd take their chances.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

my favortie Belichick moment:

Browns are down by like 20 and have the ball at the end of the game- instead of running the clock out Belichick calls a timeout ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME and kicks a field goal.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think a think about the Pats is that their D is not getting the turnovers like they did a couple of years ago. NE seemed to have a knack of being able to hide which of their linebackers were back in coverage. They seemed to get bunches of picks where a QB would be throwing some short to mid range timing pass and then one of those linebackers would seem to appear out of nowhere and pick the pass occasionally turning it into a TD. I think teams have finally got more of a handle on what they were doing and perhaps those guys have lost a step, so it is not as effective.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno, brushchi had a pick to seal the jets game, he almost had one the other night but is playing with a cast on his hand. i definitely think that, as a group, the linebackers can't cover as much ground as the group 3 years ago (no mcginnest, no ted johnson, no roman phifer). i don't think teams will run up the gut much against them because the front 3 of wilfork, warren, and seymour (or adding jarvis green and moving seymour to tackle in the 4-3) are all pretty stout against the run. plus, as mentioned, the linebackers are too slow to get to the corner.

the thing that disturbs me the most about the d is the complete lack of tackling that's going on in the secondary. the second half of the jets game was brutal. the broncos game wasn't much better. they've got to start putting some hats on bodies.

but like i said, i'm not worried about the d nearly as much as i am with the somnolent offense.

a buddy of mine who's studying medicine wrote this to my fantasy league bulletin board re owens:

Allergic reactions do not present with just being "discombobulated", they are specific immunologic parameters for which something is called an allergic reaction. If this truly were one, he'd have a fucking tube down his throat and his eyes would be chinky puffy in which case he should probably stop popping pills. But being "non responsive" with altered mental status is something 911 worthy, and in this case, appears to be most likely secondary to at least an overdose of narcotics or whatever, but I guess not enough to shut his lungs down which again, he would have had a fucking tube down his throat.

What would be the differential for Altered mental status you ask? Well, johnny Mr Owens could have had a seizure, or even a stroke. Mr Owens could have been on Mind Altering drugs...reefer, PCP, Heroine, Vicoden...Mr Owens could have had just passed out secondary to vaso-vagal syncope. Or maybe, he could be experiencing something intracranially which only now has become symptomatic i.e. tumor, lesions secondary to infections. Mr owens symptoms could still have been due to a metabolic derangement, Hyponatremia, Hypernatremia, Hypoglycemia, Acidosis etc...

What would be the work up?
good question suzy, First, you should stabilize the patient, give him oxygen, make sure he's breathing ok and his heart is good. I would get plenty of blood work, Tox screen, CBC, Chem panel. I'd get a Chest Xray and even a CT scan of the head and an EKG. If this truly were an overdose on Narcotics, I would to give him a reversal agent such as Nolaxone and or Naltraxone (Dr. Hass can talk more about this).

I wouldn't, however, Send his dumb ass back out to practice and hold a silly-ass press conference. I would also encourage him to seek treatment, or at least a psychological evaluation.

AXIS - I: disorders that he could be suffering from, Definitely Bipolar Affective Disorder, Suicide attempts are definitely consistent. Who knows, maybe he's Schizophrenic, or Schizophreniform.

AXIS II: he definitely his suffering from some personality disorders. Probably a mixture of Histrionic/Borderline/ and Narcissistic. Definitely an amalgm of Cluser B disorders.
