As controversial as some of the images in the Chevy commercial might be, Tezanos confirms reports that Chevy considered using footage of an atomic bomb explosion. The intent was to signify the beginning of the nuclear era, but Chevy's ad agency, Campbell-Ewald of suburban Detroit, removed it, in part because it might offend Japanese Americans.

FINALLY SOME CLOSURE

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

hahahahahaha WOW.

I genuinely hope GM gets bought by Toyota or something. It's just pathetic at this point.

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

The whole thing offends me, I mean it is like some sub-Riefenstahl bullshit they are putting on my tv, EVERY COMMERCIAL BREAK for one full quarter of a game?? Like I didn't see it the first time. This is our country so go ahead and destroy it with your unnecessary trucks and SUVs, soccer moms and dads. Guzzle that gas! Plus, what the hell are they talking about when they show the dude sleeping on logs and say "This is our breakfast"??? I hope John Mellencamp shits himself uncontrollably every night, Hasselhoff style, in retribution.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

dave you probably haven't even seen the dixie highway, much less driven on it. colloquially, it's known as the dixie DIE-way, because of all the drunk driving accidents on it (thanks to knockers - or drunk soldiers from fort knox).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

um, ok?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

more importantly -- GE CARS SUCK THAT'S WHY THEY DON'T SELL AND EVEN A GOOD JOHN MELLENCAMP SONG CAN'T CHANGE THAT UNCOMFORTABLE FACT.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

and MOTHERFUCK THE WHOLE BOOMER ANGLE -- i mean, what a PERFECT example of why GM is in the toilet. pitch shitty cars via a shitty song to a demographic that won't buy 'em anyway and piss off other demographics who dislike GM, john mellencamp, boomers, AND the fact that this crap is being aired endlessly during football game breaks.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah my family switched from buying only Chrysler/Dodge/Jeeps to buying only Hondas around 2002-2003. I feel lame that they did this AFTER I was out on my own, I could have inherited a much better secondhand vehicle.

It's amazing to me how much ground the big three have given up on the truck front. It's like they were totally unprepared for Japan to bring highly competitive models to one of their core markets. You only had a decade and a half, Detroit.

my second car was a honda accord -- it was great! until it got rear-ended in an accident and became a honda accord-ian.

friends of mine who were into/needed trucks tended to prefer dodge ram trucks to any other make, domestic or foreign. that was back in the late 90s, though.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

the only problem with it is there are too many people who've joined in the past year in chicago, membership is up by like 75% from last year and the supply of cars can't keep up. particularly in my neighborhood. i had to take a bus to get to one so i could go grocery shopping on sunday, plus THAT car was only available for an hour so i had to haul ass doing it.

Mods change this thread to be about Car Sharing in Hondaz and not anymore about Jon Cougar Williamsburg songs anymore plz

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, my parents shared a fucking car, they sure as hell weren't going to buy me one. they did, technically, buy my younger sister a car when she was in college. they thought it was a loan but my sister was of the mind that it's only a loan if you intend to pay it back.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

well, to be truthful my parents DID spring for the down payment on my third car (which replaced the honda that got accord-ianized). but only b/c it was a (then) brand-new mazda protege (the first 2 were used) and i had to make the remaining payments out of my own funds.

MAZDA v. HONDA FITE, anyone? i miss that car.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

my sister kind of did that to my parents too, just claimed one of their cars. I never understood how that even worked. It wasn't even like she was paying for the maintenance on it, she'd just announce "Time to get xyz fixed!" and expect them to do it even though she basically stole it and took it elsewhere. WTF.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

i had an '83 mazda gl that went through more oil than gas. i bought it in december of '92 for $400 and hoped it would last until the following spring. it last 18 months, that car was indominable. no heat, bad transmission, developed a VIOLENT shake at 50 mph that went away at 60 (top speed was also around 64 due to bad tranny), had cooling problems and a leaky head gasket that oozed oil so much that i always kept a case in the trunk.

i loved that car.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

i currently drive a 1994 oldsmobile that makes this weird noise all the time, occasionally stalls when idling at stoplights, is a little testy when i accelerate too quickly, etc. it's actually fine on the freeways, but in stop and go traffic it's sounds like death.

gear (gear), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

actually, my mazda was an '81, when i got rid of it i bought an '83 cutlass. the cutload. the gutless cutlass. literally owned by a little old lady before me, i bought it from her son when she died. all the grandma options like DRUM FUCKING BRAKES and an am only radio. brakes used to lock up all the time on wet pavement, i can remember driving to class one day and skidding right past my exit on the highway. next exit was like 5 miles away so i said fuck it and drove to the beach instead and burned some manna on a snowy beach.

i did not dig the cutlass as much as the mazda or as much as it's replacement, the red menace (93 golf wolfsburg edition).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 6 November 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

the frequency of this piece of shit commercial is truly astounding! I've never seen anything like it! In like 4 weeks John Cougar has burned up all the goodwill I've held toward him built up over 2 decades!

I didn't know you had a Ranger jb, so did I. And I miss mine as well. Got rid of it 4 years ago and haven't had a vehicle since. I don't miss *driving* or certainly not car-ownership per se, just that damn truck. And yeah it is a pussy truck but hey, I wasn't gonna drive around in an F-150, thats a little too much truck for me.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

The nice thing is knowing that the ad only runs for the first quarter of each sunday night game. If you can make it through that first thirty minutes of sheer exploitative non-sequitur nu-country hell it's smooth sailing for the rest of the broadcast.

How about that new Dodge Nitro ad where it falls through the hollow core of the earth and winds up in China, with inexplicable easter island statue gnomes all mining in the fushigino depths or whatever?

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

I miss the F-150 I bought from my grandfather for $500 - 180k, no heat, no air, routinely broken, questionable breaks, my CD player got stolen twice. But it had a V8 and I truly did not give a shit what happened in, on or around that thing.

that fruit in beer ruling's some bullshit w/out clauses also oscar de la hoya on the board for man laws? plz. also that cougar tune could be worse and it has that one lil byrds touch at the end that's alright and i hear that ad alot less on the radio than man law bulletins plus reallife jackasses invoking man law like 'no woman speaker of the house - man law!' cuz they have to borrow their sense of humor and sense of masculinity from a beer ad. plus seriously looking at burt reynolds gnarled maw much less pleasant than katrina/9-11/kennedy assasination footage.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

the fruit in beer is a ridiculous ruling. Fruit could only improve Miller Lite anyway. The Cougar tune is one of the worst songs I've ever had to sit through repeatedly. But, I don't listen to the radio (impossible to get signal in any apt I've lived in + when in car, have XM radio) and I have never, ever heard anyone invoke the man law joke in real life thankfully so perhaps it makes those ads less irritating.

I seem to recall them having better people on the Man Laws board last season.

The "fruit in beer" spot rings lame because it's so obviously a targeted attack at the increasing popularity of Corona.

The rest of the Man Law ads are enjoyable when you can concentrate on the meticulously edited mugging, but they suffer from a couple of systemic failures:

1. No matter what, at least one of the cast members will offend you by their very presence.
2. No matter what, at least one of the cast members with a speaking role will be somebody you don't recognize at all, and whatever the joke is supposed to be won't materialize.

I saw one of the mascots Sunday hoisting up the "B - LOCK" sign in the end zone on an FG.

Man Law > Our Country.

When the spots came out I didn't know who any of those dudes were except for Burt and the Bus.

since then I figured out who the amputee was, only because they had to tell us in a later spot (must have got a lot of questions about it.) also noticed that he seems to be gone from the table now (replaced by JJ?) still don't know who any of the otehr dudes are.

Corona is OK but way overpriced. NAFTA has failed us is this case.

The Man_Law system seems to be a strong monarchy (Burt Reynolds) with a weak Parliament (everybody else) much akin to England before the Civil War. It will be interesting to see if a Cromwell emerges.
