I am starting a campaign to call Joe Theismann Joe THEEZ-man. Who is with me?

Joseph Robert Theismann (born September 9, 1949 in New Brunswick, New Jersey,) is a former American football quarterback and current television football announcer for ESPN. He was born to an Austrian father, Joseph John Theismann, and a Hungarian mother, Olga Tobias, and was raised in South River, New Jersey. He played football for the University of Notre Dame and was a runner-up for the 1970 Heisman Trophy which went to Jim Plunkett of Stanford University. Late in the season, his hallmates in Zahm Hall hung an enormous banner out of a 4th story window proclaiming, "Theisman for Heisman," (sic) changing the original pronunciation of his surname, "THEEZ-man," to rhyme with "Heisman," which he has used since.

I wonder if any other players have done things similarly stupid. I mean a lot of them have nicknames that are dumb as hell, but to change your name for realz??

I really wish Rod Smart changed his name to He Hate Me.

I would like to go on record that if Chad Johnson wants to officially change his name to Ocho-Cinco, that's okay with me.

It's not the name change that bugs me, but changing it so that it rhymes with Heisman is just sad.

Yeah that is what I think, I was trying to come up with nicknames that are similar to this kind of thing (ie completely related to a performance goal etc) and couldn't come up with any.

What's odd is that the Germanic pronounciation of an "ei" word is "I". German words that are "ie" are pronounced "E". Why was it pronounced Theeesman in the first place?

I was wondering that too, but my own name is pronounced differently than it is supposed to be so I shrugged at that.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 16 November 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Eeezenschefter?

lk (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 16 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

I am not particularly familiar with this man, by choice.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Neither am I -- no cable = I've listened to his developmentally disabled brand of color commentary a total of maybe 5 times in my life -- but I knew about the Heisman thing since I was about 14. ANYWAY.
