Saw about 2.5 minutes of it (a panel w/ Dan Marino & Cris Carter schmoozing about the Pats & Colts w/ The Other Cris presiding). Oh so smug (tho that might be because of the sub-Colbertian studio decor). And Cris Carter confused Peyton & Brady @ one point - I guess all he does IS catch TDs.

Also saw some painful promo for the show celebrating its 30th (or whatever anniversary), w/ stars from HBO's critically acclaimed dramas & comedies saying HB from any number of red carpet events. Ungh.

I forgot to include the part where I bitch about the show being in HD, but the NFL Films gameclips being in non-HD. That seriously hindered the enjoyment of my cognag, I assure you.

It was like if Len Dawson and Nick Buoniconti were the hosts of NFL Primetime, and instead of talking over broadcast-quality highlights, they had Harry Kalas describing NFL Films archival footage of the same games... much better looking footage, more artfully cut, etc. I don't know if it's changed in that respect, but the hosts are just awful now by comparison. Dawson and Buoniconti were really good... just matter-of-fact and then they got out of the way.

Not that I know what Dawson & Nick B were like, but that does sound pretty good. I still like when Boomer & TJ do their thing on Primetime, tho it's 99% TJ (as it's always been).

Was Costas always the host? He's really been working that HONORABLE SPORTS GRATIVAS angle for way too long, and looks like Dick Clark gone the way of Dorian Gray (sic?) now. (BTW, I heard Jim Lampley - the orig ITN host? - doing an HBO boxing match - while my servants were giving me a pedicure, obv - and he sounded GREAT.)

Costas wasn't involved then. It was just Dawson, Buoniconti, and maybe a coach (Jerry Glanville is the last one I remember, but there were people before him...).

Lampley is terrific on boxing, imo, and is a really interesting guy in general.

-yeah...him, merchant & lederman are great...actually, throw in the dude that usually does the spanish translation, too! manny steward does good analysis, but i miss the days of foreman's insane rmablings...he was actually kind of like the joe morgan commentary. listening to the guy, you wondered how he became a champ, until you remembered how bad the heavyweight div has been since tyson lost the plot.

i can't remember the fight, but Foreman was totally out of his mind with his commentary- he actually claimed that the fight was fixed when it was over. Given that it's boxing i guess it's possible but I've never heard any announcer actually cross the line and claim that a fight was fixed.

For what it's worth, I read this bit about Ali today, regarding The Thrilla:

yeah, i'm in on il boxing. i haven't seen a good fight in ages, but i got spoiled having hbo in that late 90s early 00s golden age of morales-barrera; ward in general, but ward gatti; hopkins, trinidad...man!

So this is on Showtime now, but whatev. Just wanted to say: Phil Simms is such a horrible stick-in-the-mud. Everyone truly looks like they can't stand him. Adam Schein seems incredibly unctuous. Brandon Marshall lights up the screen, though. So fun to get his perspective every week.

three years pass...

LOL I just looked up this thread, forgetting I had posted the above. I basically would like to reiterate what I wrote. Phil Simms is just a mean person. He went way out of his way to let Michael Irvin that the Cowboys did NOT have any photos of him on their bus. Brandon Marshall is still good, though. And Irvin has 1000x the charisma of Simms.
