cheap shot i know, michael irvin, natch. still kinda love him despite how dumb he is.

preseason starts tonight with steelers ("we got a black quarterbackhead coach, so STEP BACK" -flavor flav) vs. saints (full pads) in the hall of fame game. it's on nfl network, which no one i know gets, so i'll be at a bar watching glavine go for 300 against the cubs. oh well.

talk about this game and the rest of the preseason here.

When I was a kid, I would watch every second of any preseason game on tv. Now I could not care less about it.

Michael Irvin's speech was so awesome. I thought he might speak indefinitely!

Tim Couch is getting another shot at the NFL with the Jaguars. The local sports news had a feature on it talking about how Couch had a couple of surgeries on his shoulder and that he had been working out to give it one last shot. I always thought he got a raw deal in Cleveland. I doubt that Couch could been a superstar or anything, but I think he is an example of what happens to a player who ends up on the wrong team at the wrong time. Considering the punishment he took playing for the Browns, I thought it was really cruddy that Cleveland fans cheered as he got taken off the field on a stretcher.

I was also surprised to find out that Tarik Glenn had retired from the Colts. That guy has had Peyton Manning's back in protection for his entire career. Indy is going to be going with a rookie to replace him, so you have to wonder how that will turn out.

earlnash, Sunday, 5 August 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

So far Tomlin gets good reviews, but the Steelers have some questions they need to answer. Will Rofflesburger ever be as good as he was those first two years? How is the offensive line? Can they find someone to replace Porter? What's the depth at running back like?

I'll be surprised if Couch is still around after the first cut. Sad really.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 5 August 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

irvin's speech was really touching! i don't think i've ever heard him so humbled. i don't understand how anyone could not be completely delighted with the wonder that is ~*~*michael irvin*~*~, also they should have booted all those olde tymey motherfuckers off the stage and just let him talk for 20 hours.

tomlin is going to be a veryveryvery good HC. the vikings are incredibly, hugely stupid for not hanging onto him/making him their HC. the vikes defense was like a chicken with its head cut off before he became DC, they could barely get lined up right in 2005. he's a good teacher and has a shitload of charisma.

robblesburger will be fine imo~

cankles, Sunday, 5 August 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

i would like to see couch come back, that would be interesting.

i need to read or watch irvin's speech, everyone's been raving about it all day.

Charlie Sanders's speech was the best. People should be talking about that speech, instead of the crack-head's.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, can't really back michael irvin as long as art monk is on the outside looking in! skins-ravens scrimmage was kind of silly, but a running back from my high school got good reviews from the players, coaches and commentators, so that's kind of cool.

did i ever tell you about the time i got run over by jonathan ogden in freshman football?

j.q higgins, Monday, 6 August 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

guys I'm sorry to be such a girl but Mike Tomlin is so hot.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 August 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a 9er fan, so I'll never like Michael Irvin.

Leee, Monday, 6 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

he is, hs! kinda got a omar epps thing going on. i'd probably make out with him, no homo~

cankles, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know anything abt art monk tbh or the whole debate but they should just let him in so everyone can stfu abt it. i am not sure of the reason why he is so despised, i just remember dr. z's rationale which is that catching a million button hooks for 7 yards does not a hall of famer make.

cankles, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

i dont get too butthurt about any hof-y stuff cuz it is all a little silly/lame 2 me but i think what causes so much friction is the nebulous def of what the hof is supposed to be? when ppl bitch abt how so-and-so was not a good enough player to be deserving of a spot in there, it is the hall of FAME, rite? it seems like it shd be a place more for the legendary figures and whatnot regardless of whether or not they were actually great players, which is the argmt that gets joe namath in and the one that ppl will use when vinatieri is eligible (lol). except i kind of hate all that mythologizing, and also those dudes get more than enough recognition anyway while genuinely great players continue to remain unacknowledged, so u would think that this would be the perfect venue to appreciate their contributions!

sour grapes on my part? of course! i grew up hating the cowboys and art monk was godlike around these parts. he was sort of ripken-esque in his dedication and consistency, though, in the final analysis, darrell green is probably a better comp (though, even a rarer bird b/c he stayed at cb his entire career and was pretty effective even at the end).

j.q higgins, Monday, 6 August 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Tomlin totally Omar Epps!!

leavethecapital, Monday, 6 August 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

The 80s Redskins are getting punked on the HOF. Other than Darrell Green, none of them have made the hall. C'mon...it took until this year to get in one of the HOGS into the hall of fame and they were considered about the best offensive line ever during their time. Joe Jacoby was a freak of a OT for the Hogs, he was the biggest guy to play OT up to that time. Mark May was also really good.

I also don't get why Art Monk isn't getting the respect. Monk numbers don't look that eye poping compared to today, but when the guy caught a hundred balls, it really was a freakish thing. The consistency of that O-line and Monk is a big reason Washington could win three Superbowls with three different QBs.

The football Hall is really weird, they have never put one punter other than someone like Sammy Baugh (who also punted and I guess was freakishly good at everything). You can't play the game without punting, so someone has to be the bellweather of the position. If Ray Guy doesn't deserve to be in the hall, as he seems to be the guy everyone says was about the best punter ever, then they ought to get rid of punting.

So tell me about the time you got run over by Ogden.
