No Apologies
submitted by DonovanMcNabb 1 hour ago
There has been a lot of talk about the interview I did on HBO's Real Sports. I have no apologies. I was asked a variety of questions and I answered them. The fact that the producers and publicists at HBO decided to focus on those answers that related to race shows that it remains a hot topic in society today.

Let me address some feedback...

First, the interview took place in August before the season started so for those who think I "played the race card" because we are 0-2 are dead wrong.

I did not say that Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Carson Palmer are not criticized when they don't play well. They have been criticized when they throw interceptions, when the throw incompletions, and when their teams don't win. They are criticized and so is every other quarterback for that matter. And that type of criticism may, in fact, be warranted. But that's not the type of criticism that we discussed.

Black quarterbacks have to deal with different things than white quarterbacks. If you don't think that's true than you are naïve. Peyton, Tom and Carson to name a few, have never been asked what it's like to be a white quarterback. They probably have not been told that they should have scrambled more. I bet Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young, Jake Plummer, and Doug Flutie have never been told by a member of any racial consciousness organization that they don't play the quarterback position white enough.

I would love to live in a world where race is not an issue. But it is. I did not ask HBO to interview me but I did consent. I did not bring up the topic of race but I didn't back down from it either. This interview was supposed to be about how my career has been surrounded by controversy and how my upbringing has shaped the way I have dealt with it. Unfortunately, the interview itself has created yet another controversy.

All I did was answer the questions that were asked of me honestly and truthfully. I had no agenda. The people of Philadelphia have criticized my coach for not answering questions. Now I'm criticized for answering questions. I understand if people have a different opinion or view point than I do, I really do. I think if there is one thing I understand better than most people - it's okay to be different.

aw. I love him. what exactly are people mad about?

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

they were talking about this today on NFL Total Access but it wasn't clear to me that there was a "controversy" as such.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

"They probably have not been told that they should have scrambled more." <--- not exactly Darfur levels of racism here.

p.s. Donny - I think Jake Plummer would trade places with you in a second.

I'm not really sure who's he is calling racist though... media, fans, owners, everyone? what is a "racial consciousness organization" ?

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

i've got a soft spot for mcnabb, too. i think ever since he started doing the moonwalk in the endzone and shit.

I don't know what the "racial consciousness organization" he's referring to is, but I don't think just because he leads an enviable life in some ways he should be barred from talking about his experience. Does anyone doubt that there's added scrutiny of black QBs? I mean, it wasn't superlong ago that there were none and there still aren't many.

hs, a year or two ago the head of the philly chapter of the naacp criticized mcnabb for not running enough and basically insinuated that he was a sell-out for becoming more of a pocket passer. i always found that really galling.

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

"well, ursportspro, let me comment on that..."

xpost okay, that's clearly what he's referring to by using the counter example of white dudes being accused of playing too white. that blows.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ dudes in the comment section trying to give him tips on how to throw.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

or all these guys like "i'm white but i support you"

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

i am usually the first one to delight in the misery of famous people regardless of the situation, but i always thought the ratio of flack mcnabb gets compared to the amount of deservedness is pretty much unprecedented, he's a great player and comports himself with dignity in public and is never nasty in the press no matter how much he's provoked, he's generally just kind of goofy and likable. the philly fanbase factor skews things a little because they are psychos, but even still he never seems to get support from his team mates (cf. TO sitch) or the black community at large? it's just crazy2me~!

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

also bnw you are really approaching it from the wrong angle, idk if you saw the interview or not. he never called anyone racist and he was basically just asked if there's a difference in expectations/treatment wrt black and white QBs. which is completely true.

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

plus it's weird when people respond to a black public figure noting the existence of race by getting all defensive, oh I guess your life is pretty hard, huh? like the man said, he would love to live in a world where race is not an issue.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think he might just be a little humorless and aloof, and winds up rubbing a lot of folks the wrong way. If he were totally amazing at his job, that wouldn't matter, but he's often hurt and seems to have become more and more cautious over the course of his career as a result. All put together it makes it difficult for morons to like him though clearly the man loves his moms and has a good size brain on his shoulders so people need to just sit the fuck back and relax, let the man play.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

there's some weird shit going on w/r/t white dudes getting pissed when black dudes dare to complain about racism. the replies are usually, "hilariously" along the lines of, "there ain't no racism, stop complainin' and know yr place".

omar little, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

also I really hate the idea that you apparently have to be, like, a target of genocide to be justified in describing how race affects your life.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm getting madder the more I think about it because I think someone could have gone a lot further than McNabb did and been totally right.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

There's a big part of me that wishes more minority athletes would act a little more uppity from time to time. McNabb is catching shit because he's unconcerned enough with everybody's opinions to open his mouth. That NAACP thing from last year or so came out of left field, though, my assumption was that dude forgot to RSVP some function because he thought the invite was junk mail and philly's chief colored person decided to throw a tantrum about it.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

and i use that last epithet to express my overall nausea with any racial consciousness organization that claims such a goal while retaining such a title. racial consciousness indeed

yeah i love this, it almost always includes phrases like "the race card," and "this isnt about black or white" blublub. there's this aggression that comes out w/some white folks like they see PC bogeymen everywhere, i guess out of an insane fear that they will be branded a racialist all scarlet letter style.

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

rogermexico., Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

i think white pps are generally sensitive to the impact of full-blown aka 'classic' racism, jim crow america and whatnot, and of course they don't want to be seen as associated with that. and since that's pretty much their illustration for why racism sux, when they recognize the little strains of racialism inside themselves the reaction is to try - without ever actually acknowledging these feelings openly - to insist that their brand of racialism doesn't fall under the rubric of real racism so you can't lump us in with the KKK nyah nyah.

i find the black v white QB thing really interesting because it's a manifestation of all this, the way unintentional/unacknowledged racialism can mold expectations. wayne gandy, left tackle for the falcons last year, talked really frankly about what he's observed over the years w/black QBs (including vick) - the expectations from coaches that these guys are athletic so if they can't make an easy play in the passing game, they should just make something happen with their feet. so they never demand that the black QBs learn the finer points of passing, and the QBs know they aren't expected to either. it goes both ways too, like how white halfbacks are always converted to fullbacks.

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

ultimate black quarterback: joe namath

cankles, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

They probably have not been told that they should have scrambled more.

i take it donovan mcnabb never had a conversation with new england era drew bledsoe.

I bet Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young, Jake Plummer, and Doug Flutie have never been told by a member of any racial consciousness organization that they don't play the quarterback position white enough.

so it's tarkenton's, young's, plummer's, and flutie's fault that they don't talk to morons? i mean seriously? just because someone says something to you doesn't mean their point is valid.

ultimate black quarterback = late '70s steve grogan.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 20 September 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

"They probably have not been told that they should have scrambled more." <--- not exactly Darfur levels of racism here.

that is exceedingly dumb.

and hey kevin, flutie has to be on abc's college football halftime show every week so i'm not sure it could be said he "don't talk to morons" (sic).

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

sorry but like i'm w/cankles that the public treatment of mcnabb, who i love, here is something that really kind of freaks me the fuck out and gets my goat, i mean coming on here being all like "i guess he shouldn't talk to morons, ppl publicly saying he's not black enough isn't racism" is like an if-i-was-jon-the-ban-hammer-would-be-laid offense in my book.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

also cankles otm re: being asked questions during an interview specifically about these things and answering them isn't, like, whining or making a big deal about them. mcnabb has been basically notoriously gracious and unwilling to address insults slung at him his entire career.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

What we don’t need is someone who has made a career out of being non-committal about these issues to suddenly start talking about racism in the NFL and how it pertains to the quarterback position like he’s been trying to say this all along. None of us needs Donovan McNabb to tell us about race and racism; needs for him to suddenly attempt go black before our very eyes.

ugh

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

calling each other oreos has been especially productive for the black community in america, why, just look at jesse jackson trying to fuck obama's comapaign in the ass.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

as far as mcnabbs comments on race im kinda just like well sure obv - but i am interested in the cloud of dissatisfaction that's hovered over his career despite the fact that he's one of the best qb's of his generation. probably goes something like this: philly fans are assholes + injuries + weirdly shifting style of play + enigmatic not conventionally leadershipy type personality + ? = mcnabb, people are not so sure.

jhøshea, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

also he's had some really horrible stretches in his career - maybe all related to injury - but it's weird to see a good qb play so bad.

jhøshea, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

his game too is pretty unconventional and often not pretty

jhøshea, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get why pointing it out as minor is so offensive? Didn't young McNabb have people vandalizing his house so black people wouldn't live there?

When Tony Banks played here the newspaper would regularly run photos of him with his doo-wrag and his dog Felony. The call-in shows were filled with that shit. That was way more nauseating then the McNabbtroversy.

Maybe I am expecting too much from a blog post.

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get why pointing it out as minor is so offensive?

well, how do you know how it feels?

the mcnabb shit is nauseating because of the reactions of those who are telling him (the one who has experienced this shit over and over again) to prove it/man up/grow up/shut up. he's trying to explain why such so-called minor incidents can be hurtful, but many people who live in rarefied air and who have never had to deal with it on a daily basis aren't willing to even hear a single complaint. "we've given you so much more than you deserve already, take it" is what seems to be the underlying message.

omar little, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

And I don't get why McNabb has become the center of racial controversy for answering a question, put to him in August, on what it's like to be a black QB in the NFL, oh wait's it's because Americans can't talk about without becoming spazzed out retards.

Leee, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I honestly don't understand how talking about how race operates in some "minor" way detracts from, like, condemning lynchings. You can be aware of all these things at the same time.

horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

even when duante was throwing up one of the best statistical years ever they were all over him. loved stupid whiteboy losers like jim kleinssaser and chris (SUCH hard worker, GUTTY special teams player, such a HEAD for the game) walsh

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't outright rejecting claims of racism almost as dangerous as outright accepting them? Proving it seems valuable as it stops being this easily brushed off effusive concept that we can't control, and starts becoming something you can pin down.

I honestly don't understand how talking about how race operates in some "minor" way detracts from, like, condemning lynchings. You can be aware of all these things at the same time.

True enough, but pointing out that there's a scale involved doesn't make you racist (or does it?).

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't outright rejecting claims of racism almost as dangerous as outright accepting them? Proving it seems valuable as it stops being this easily brushed off effusive concept that we can't control, and starts becoming something you can pin down.

This is why talking about racism-qua-racism is so unproductive. You'll notice that McNabb never calls anyone a racist or even uses the term racism; he just points out that his existence as a black QB is fundamentally different from that of a white QB, at both an individual and institutional level. Once you try to label something/someone racist, people get defensive and try to shut down the debate or at least the race-angle.

Leee, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

I can't fault McNabb at all. He was asked a question and gave an honest answer. It's no surprise he feels the way he does. This is the same guy that was booed by Philly fans on the day he was drafted. What a great introduction to the NFL.

This thread reminds of this guy.
