You know who is good is Steve Smith. Imagine if that guy had Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

here was a neat-o post on FO the other day:

One of the things Randy Moss does, when he is healthy and wants to play, is mercilessly expose anything less than completely superior corner play, even when there is a good pass rush. I can’t count the number of times that I saw Moss openly call for a streak when he saw the right alignment, have Culpepper switch to a max protect scheme, and then watch the two of them play “go deep” sandlot football, making the corner, and sometimes the safety and corner, look like Pop Warner level players.

Shanahan once said that the Vikings with Moss were the only NFL team he ’s ever seen which would frequently just throw the ball in the general direction of a certain receiver, and score a ton of points with that method. If I was a fan of a non-Patriot AFC team with Super Bowl goals, what would worry me is that Moss is now playing in a system, and seems to have bought into it, which is much, much, more complex than anything the Vikings ever did, and has a quarterback with a skill set which dwarfs any other quarterback whom Moss has played with. Toss in a Welker and Stallworth, and a tight end with some talent, and I don’t think the Patriots have done more than scratch the surface, in terms of exploiting match-ups. As the season goes on, we are likely to see more wrinkles, with more stuff left unused until the playoffs. If I were a Colts fan (and I am, in a nonconference way) I’d be worried. The Steelers are off to a good start, but I just don’t watch them enough to have good handle on their personnel.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

no, you can put a steve smith with a brady or a manning in a situation where you have one amazing deep wr and come into to every sunday with a completely half-assed defensive game plan and it doesn't matter. Steve Smith isn't being screwed over by his passer, or at least nearly as much as he (and his team) are fucked by a lame GM and a mediocre D. Shit, give SS a Roethlisberger, he'd have a ring.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

xpost lol of course we've only seen the patriots go up against one team that had a decent line so far, that being the bills against the run, and they held them up pretty well.

why do people always talk about how amazing a teams' skill players are in the first half of the season, year after year after year, knowing that every conference championship and every super bowl usually winds up being decided by 1. mistakes and 2. special teams?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

(I should say pretty well until they broke poz's arm)

because skill players are the one's that get their teams to conference championships and super bowls?

AINT DAT THE TROOF

except this year, unless starting grossman counts as a mistake. bears just got they asses whupped (by superior skill position players, at that)

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure who is worse, grossman or benson. i'm almost positive one of them isn't completely terrible and is being hindered by the other's ineffectiveness but i don't know which one it is. i think benson might be ok.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

We're definitely off on a tangent here, but the key to Grossman's suckitude in the NFL is that he was a Spurrier QB in college. They all play lousy on Sundays.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:12 (eighteen years ago)

benson is a servicable nfl running back. let's not forget that the titans are a dropped pass away from 3-0 w/ the chris brown/lendale white brigade. the problem is grossman.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

benson will go for 1100+ and 7-8 tds this year. that's not exactly a problematic running back, i don't think.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

benson isnt good, but it's a loooot easier to get by with a not-good RB than it is with a not-good QB

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

otm. or two mediocre rbs, even.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

1100 yards isn't even 69 yards per game. have you seen how he runs? he looks like one of those backs who have played behind superior lines since high school and has never had to make something from nothing on his own. he keeps waiting for a gaping hole to develop when sometimes all there is is a crease. he runs with no conviction.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

no 8[ no credibility

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

kevin that is a good zing up there

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

i think benson is a'ight, but "a'ight" in the sense that, "well he's gonna sneak out a pair of 1,000 yd seasons and then float around the league like ron dayne for 2-3 seasons after that". the bears have had absolutely no luck with drafting anyone on offense in years. rex, benson, enis, david terrell, mcnown, etc.

omar little, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

benson looks EXACTLY like anthony thomas did in '03. the only difference is that benson is making about 3x as much as thomas did.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Inflation!

Leee, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

i want to start seeing signs at the game that say "RUN WITH CONVICTION".
Though in this man's NFL, most seem to settle for running while avoiding a second conviction.

Can I change my vote to Ocho Cinco?

As part of Chad's agreement with the company, he will do the “Go Daddy Dance” for his next end zone celebration, which was originally done by Go Daddy Girl Candice Michelle in a Super Bowl ad.
