Belichick gets under Godfrey's skin By Tom Curran NBCSports.com

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Inflamed by the 52-7 whipping given to his team by the New England Patriots, Washington Redskin Randall Godfrey tore into Patriots head coach Bill Belichick after Sunday's game.
"I said something to (Belichick) after the game," Godfrey said to NBCSports.com. "I told him, 'You need to show some respect for the game.' You just don't do that. I don't care how bad it is. You're up 35 points and you're still throwing deep? That's no respect."
New England led 38-0 entering the fourth quarter on a drive into Washington territory.
The Patriots then picked up a first down with a 15-yard completion on third-and-9 and followed that two plays later with a 35-yard bomb down the left sidelines from Tom Brady to Randy Moss. When the Patriots faced fourth-and-1 from the Washington 7 soon after, Brady gained 2 yards on a quarterback sneak. He threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker three plays later.
New England added its final touchdown on a six-play, 45-yard drive led by backup quarterback Matt Cassel to make it 52-0.
Asked about the decision to go on fourth down, Belichick asked a reporter, "What did you want me to do, kick a field goal? We're just playing."
Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs took no offense saying, "I have no problem with anything they did. No problem with me."
Godfrey, who has played for six teams in his career was less forgiving.
"You look at all the great head coaches ... I'm just disappointed," he said. You gotta show some class, show some respect. Joe Gibbs? We wouldn't have done that. Bill Walsh? You wouldn't see those types of guys doing that stuff. I've never seen nothing like that. Most teams, you get up like that you sit on the ball and try to run the time out. They're up 30-some points and they're throwing deep. That was blatant disrespect. I hope we can see them again, definitely. You don't see Joe Gibbs doing that. You can't even imagine that kind of stuff coming from him. Joe Gibbs. Bill Walsh. Bill Parcells. This isn't like college going for power rankings. This is the pros you show some respect, show some class."
In a one-on-one interview Friday with NBCSports.com, Belichick was asked whether his Patriots had been breaching end-game etiquette by scoring late on teams.
"I've been coaching too long," Belichick said. "I remember being on that side. When I was coaching defense it was my job to keep the score down, not theirs. When you're playing defense it's your job to stop them. It's not (the offense's) job to not score. It's like I tell the offense, what the (bleep) do you think I send you guys out there for? To punt? We have a punt team for that. That's not your job. Your job is to go out there and score points. If you come off the field and you haven't scored points you haven't done your job."

- We have won again. That is good! But what is best in life? - The open steppe, fleet horse, falcon on your wrist, wind in your hair! - Wrong, r00kie! Tom, what is best in life? - To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women! - THAT is good.

Dr. Z included an anecdote recently about Gibbs running up the score on someone. Godfrey needs a history lesson.

dr. z on running up the score vis a vis skins:
"In 1991 I was covering Atlanta-Washington in the playoffs. I talked to the Falcons' defensive end, Tim Green, and he said, "Ask Glanville about Joe Gibbs throwing the out and up in the fourth quarter when they were ahead, 42-17. He's been using that as a motivational tool all week."
The Redskins' out and up went for 64 yards and a touchdown to Art Monk in that November meeting and moved the score to 49-17. It ended up 56-17. So when I talked to Falcons coach Jerry Glanville that evening in his hotel suite I asked him about it. His eyes narrowed."
it's funny, b/c i was thinking that this pats team reminded me of that skins team. very workmanlike, no mistakes, but capable of meting severe punishment to teams foolish enough to make mistakes in their presence. plus, that pats o-line reminds of the hogs a bit.

I actually had to go to a "motivational speaking engagement" with Don Shula today and he's totally dead serious in his jerkfacery about this. He actually cut away from his prepared speech to bitch a little bit, 30 or 45 seconds, about SPYGATE and the asterisk.
I used to like Shula, but after his comments during the whole Mike Shula firing and Nick Saban hiring earlier this year at UA and now this new round of whining, I've decided he's just a grumpy old fart no one should be listening to.

i used to love how he sat on the rules committee and the dolphins would always mysteriously lead the league for fewest penalties. nothing like shaping the game to your team instead of vice versa.

from now on don shula = grandpa simpson.
"it should "be noted that the Patriots were fined and a No. 1 draft choice was taken away during that year of accomplishment."
so i guess he's also going to put an asterisk next to every game that mercury morris played while blown out of his mind, right?

Shula went to the same uni as I did in clevo. I still have no connection with the man. Never wrote me etc. Decent enough coach though- I didn't realize that he coached the Colts in Super Bowl V (?) or something agianst the Cowboys.
