Smug, arrogant, condescending prick? Or good sports broadcasting?

He grates me...big DUD.

van igloo (van smack), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

For that first season of Battlebots, CLASSIC. As an NFL analyst... eh, he's okay.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Salisbury is pretty grating and I used to totally despise him, but in the past two seasons, they have had him breaking down more film especially on ESPN News and he does that pretty well.

Sean Salisbury was a clipboard holder in the NFL, that is for sure. I know Gary Hogeboom and he was no Gary Hogeboom.

earlnash, Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

He irritates me no end...and I have no idea why. I think it's the smug factor. Is it just me or does he front like he actually played? that's the feeling I get...comes on with a little too much "I was in the shit" attitude, which doesn't sit well. I don't have a problem with his analysis...it's the 'tude.

But he makes delicious steaks.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 10 November 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Classic. At least with John Clayton. They're my favorite duo on ESPN, with that whole jock/nerd dynamic. It's like The Breakfast Club with NFL stats.

Giants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I h8 the st8k.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

I used to really like him a lot a couple years ago. I thought he was pretty incisive and usually spot on in his analysis. And he called it like he saw it without being a total dick about it. Where he lost me was *precisely* the whole shouting-match-with-Clayton schtick, which is so tired no matter who the participants are. I saw some thing around the time of the draft last year, when he and Clayton went at it, and it just struck me as really lame; Clayton was actually somewhat trying to have a discussion but the Steak was just acting like a moron.

so ... used to be Classic ... nowadays pretty much dud.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 November 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll fucking hate him forever cuz of all the shit he was talking about Randy Moss....

Is there any truth to the rumor that Salisbury was arrested while a player in San Diego on a Felony???

Go SeaHawks!!!!!!!!!!!

Billy Ray Wallace, Saturday, 4 February 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

When analyzing the NFL, Salisbury acts like he is a four time Superbowl MVP instead of admitting the truth--that in his NFL career he was a complete failure. Salisbury is the most arrogant, self-absorbed analyst on ESPN. Perhaps Salisbury should be reminded of his pathetic career statistics (19 career touchdowns matched with 19 career interceptions--in a career Sean Salisbury could not throw as many touchdowns as Shaun Alexander made in one season [28]). Salisbury is nothing but a career bench warmer, clipboard holder, talentless, flacid, limp, sorry excuse for an NFL player. Salisbury has absolutely no right--or basis to analyze or critique anyone or anything. Salisbury "guaranteed" a Pittsburgh Steeler victory in Superbowl XL (Sportscenter 2/4/06) based on his "NFL veteran analysis and breakdown." When the Seahawks win on Sunday--I hope every Seahawk fan will flood Salisbury with e-mails and phone messages rubbing his face in another in his on-going string of bad decisions and losing ways.

I wish he'd taken that ass't coach job in AZ.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 4 February 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Any guy with four rings knows a thing or two about football, regardless of whether he held a clipboard or not. Gary Kubiak spent his entire career standing on the sidelines watching John Elway play, and now he's a head coach. I'm not going to criticize him for not getting on the field... he was in the same meetings Elway was and probably knows quite a bit.

I think the problem is that Salisbury decided that the path to fame was screaming arrogance, which is part and parcel with the way televised sports 'journalism' is conducted these days. He is part of the John Kruk, Charles Barkley (who I love), Dan Patrick, Ben Maller, Michael Irvin, Stephen A. Smith, Jim Rome, JT the Brick, etc. etc. continuum, or what I like to call a Professional Douchebag.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 5 February 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

OTM. In Salisbury's first couple of years on ESPN, he just wasn't this much of a smug, hollering douche. The style has taken hold, and I'm sure the on-air heads are changing to meet the demands of their producers, knowing that if they don't, there are a thousand telegenic assholes lined up to take their place.

Let me clarify that I meant AFC Championship rings. :)

According to the goofs at Deadspin, he used his cellphone to take pictures of his wang then showed the pictures to his female co-workers at ESPN. The guy's a complete tool. I like Jaws much better.

so casual, so off-hand. it slipped over his tongue and out his mouth so easily it makes me think that perhaps, maybe, it wasn't the first time he'd used that expression.

If you discount the print-media buffoons (Jay Mariotti, Skip Bayless, et al.) who go on TV with the express intent of destroying whatever credibility the newspaper industry once had, Salisbury is the least cogent, most wrongheaded voice in the sports media. He's an atrocity. Yet this broadcast lunacy has saved his gridiron legacy. Salisbury's career-passer rating was a dismal 55.1 and he never had one decent season, but in retrospect that production looks amazing. It seems impossible, but it's true: Sean Salisbury was better as a player. Which is just about the craziest sentence I've ever written.

Apparently he took a picture of his salisbury steak on his cell phone and texted it to a co worker at espn. Got canned.
