serious question: anyone know what the scheduling rules are in the nfl? more specifically, why have the dolphins played in pittsburgh two years in a row? you would think the dolphins would have gotten them at home this year.

schedules are based on a formula based on where teams finish. they didn't play pittsburgh, per se, two times in a row, they played the team that finished in pittsburgh's slot two years in a row.

My new football scheduling rule would be that the team with the best record should host the Super Bowl. Since the Super Bowl is an economic shot in the arm for the host city there's no reason the same 6 cities should get the benefit all the damn time. Plus adding a hint of weather to the Super Bowl would be make the game more interesting. The rain last year in Miami was awesome and the clouds should be seeded in the skies of every host city a week before the game.

my dad was still a season ticket holder in '79. he said the '78 team was probably the best one he saw, better than the '76 team that *should* have beat the raiders in the playoffs if not for the phantom roughing the passer call against sugar bear hamilton. it was weird seeing ron erhart's name when i clicked on that link, he was the coach that eventually drove the pats into the ground. and also the guy who first brought bill parcells to new england.

check out the stats back then, totally different game. '79 was the last year before grogan's knees totally went out on him. probably his best year statistically, 3200 yards passing, 28 tds, and he could still run. in '78 the pats had three running backs rush for at least 675 yards and then had grogan run for 539. those are stats that some southwest conference team from the early '80s would put up when running the wishbone offense.

Miami@Pitt might be interesting if the Steelers continue to play down to the competition. You have to beat the bad teams. This is why all the blather about NE running up the score makes no sense. I've watched several games this year alone where teams who are behind 10 to 20 points come back to either win or make it close. This is is the pros, if you don't want the score run up on you, stop the offense.

what's the over/under in the pats game? because westbrook is exactly the kind of back who gives their d fits. plus the pats are gonna score like 90 points so.... take the over.

Packers - Detroit can't stop the pass and has a terrible running game, so unless Favre has one of his particularly bad dome games and throws a bunch of interceptions or the Lions get a TD off of a return, I don't see how the Lions can win.

Dallas - I'd like to see the Jets win two in a row, I don't think it will happen.

Indy - The Colts have some injury problems, but so does Atlanta. I can't see the Falcons winning.

Texans - Houston has got Andre Johnson and Schaub healthy and are quietly back to .500 at 5-5. I could see taking that over bet for this game as both teams D is in the lower parts of the NFL.

Seahawks - I want to take the Rams to win their third in a row, but I just cannot pull the trigger.

Giants - The Giant's offense has been sputtering and their defense is getting nicked up. NYG's are pretty decent stopping the run, so even if Petersen plays, I think they should have enough to beat the Vikings.

Tampa - I'm picking the Bucs, but I don't feel good on the pick as I think they are not any better than Washington. Campbell looked pretty sharp against the Cowboys and they were a play or two away in that game.

Carolina - If you could take the Panthers D and put them with the Saints offense you might have one good club. NO could win, especially if they get up a couple of scores.

Tennesee - The Titans' D has been giving up some yards in the past few weeks after being tough early in the year. Cinci's offense is just not in step, they make stupid plays at the wrong time. They move the ball all over the place but drop passes in the endzone or get penalties that lead to field goals instead of TDs.

KC - This will be a fugly game, but that is the Chiefs' kind of game.

Arizona - SF might be a playoff team if they had an offense, especially with their defense. Arizona has some impressive athletes. I had not seen Larry Fitzgerald play outside of highlights, that guy can catch some passes.

Chargers - SD is not going anywhere, but the Ravens are not getting it done.

Bears- Denver has been up and down all year, I figure this is their down week.

NE - I'd love to see Jim Johnson's defense create some serious pain for NE, but more likely those blitzes will get turned into completed bombs for big yards.

Steelers - After last week, I think Pittsburgh is totally suspect. They have a bunch of wins and the talking heads are hot on them, but criminy they have lost now to the Jets, Arizona and Denver. They are not terrible or anything, but they are getting the benefit of a easy schedule like this week with Miami.

The wheels are coming off slowly, but surely, for Pittsburgh. They'll win this weekend (probably) and have a easy schedule the rest of the way for the most part but Big Ben is taking hits like he's never before. Pitt gave up four sacks to Clevo who couldn't rush a Who concert before that game. Roffles was limping around the Jets last Sunday as well. Parker and Davenport haven't been the ambiguously 1000 yard duo like I thought. Troy P still blitz's but can't get to the QB like he should be- have teams figured out how to block that blitz? DA for the Browns was never sacked in their heartbreaker which is mind blowing.

Their D is still good and they'll win the division by one game but I don't think Roffles is going last the season.

I'm not sure I subscribe to the adage that the moment you clinch home field throughout, you bench everybody, but I don't believe in the polar opposite in continuing to play the starters for 4 quarters.

Plus, you know this year is different--the Pats have agitated many around the league with their supposed "running up the score", and someone may take it personally and commit a cheap shot. So far we haven't seen it and I think most of the players have too much class for that, but you never know.

this is obviously really awful. it seems like he might have been at home because someone had been trying to break into his house a lot last week. hopefully this has nothing to do with the stuff he was involved in last year. i mean i hope if he or his house was being targeted it was because people wanted his jewelry or his cars or his money not his life or that of his girlfriend or child. this happened about 5 minutes from my house. very scary. really hope dude pulls through.

guy who writes for the miami herald says his playing career is possibly over due to damage to brain from blood loss and lack of oxygen.

yeah. i actually recall in high school that one of the maintenance guys died when sawing some lumber w/ a table saw. a small piece of wood apparently hit him in the leg and w/o even breaking the skin, severed the femoral artery and the guy died pretty quickly.

from the sound of things w/ sean taylor, i would be very surprised if he plays again if he even survives. this is very sad.

I'd just be worried about his survival at this point
