horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

ade would love it so much for the falcons to hire bill cowher

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

BOWDEN TO ARKANSAS
TUBERVILLE TO ARKANSAS
GROBE TO ARKANSAS

I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I'll believe this one, since he's already quit the Falcons.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

lol i was thinkin about you when i heard this cankles : D

omar little, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

lol well tbh i would be happy with cowher as long as his heart's in it, but i dont see him being ready to come back for another year or two. i'm hoping they make a run at MARRRRRTY.

cankles, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

two words: MIKE TICE

omar little, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

JAKE PLUMMER

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

If they're smart, they'll go after Josh McDaniels... the OC for the Pats. He's been in for 7 years and, if this year is any indication, he's ready to take over a team.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'd go for a defensive coach, maybe someone like Rex Ryan unless the Ravens give Billick the heave ho and promote him.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

what a bullshit move to quit during the season

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

if you get Tice your local sports talk radio will get 1000 percent better! he's full of goofy quotes

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

this is the week 15 thread btw

cankles, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

What about Denny Green? He is who we think he is.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

interesting post from the FO thread on the topic~

For those of you who have followed Art Blank throughout his Home Depot and now Falcons career this outcome is not staggering.

I worked for the guy for over 15 years and his list of good qualities is endless. Great man and even better business person.

His fatal flaw. Hiring.

Seriously, the list of train wreck disaster employees at Home Depot that Art “had to hire” is miles and miles long.

He just flat out can’t see talent at any level and one of the biggest reasons he left HD was the fact that the HD BOD told him that his opinion was no longer valuable when it came to executive hiring decisions.

Bob Nardelli, the ex-GE CEO who left HD much, much worse than how he found it and with $210MM bucks.

Blank had been courting him for YEARS…you can see how that ended.

Vick, Nardelli, Petrino…and the worst part of it…Art is a VERY hands-on leader. You won’t be able to pry hiring away from him with any size crowbar.

My guess is that he has to interview anybody who gets hired into the Falcons organization.

I was about to laugh until I remembered "people who live in glass houses...." :(

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

So someone finally showed up at the press conference to become the new Arkansas coach. they even scared the shit out of him with the Hog Call.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:31 (seventeen years ago)

Man, DeAngelo Hall just eviscerates Petrino here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3151163&categoryId=2378529

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

man espn.com and si.com both with really awesome systematic takedowns of petrino. pat forde's on espn.com is superb. petrino seems like grade a certified prime douche.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

So does anybody think that due to Saban and Petrino's less than stellar affairs that college coaches over the next few years thinking of making the jump might take one look and say..."Nah".

granted there's more money to be had but they just seem to hate the NFL version of the game when they make the transition. Petrino was given a shitty situation as well but boo fucking hoo!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck DeANgelo Hall and his little mv7 cheek stickers.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously. I mean, fuck Petrino too, but shoddop Hall.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember, Rock: you live close to Oxford, but your allegiance lies with Starkville?

I know you have better things to concentrate on in life, but for the sake of discussion on the football threads...

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

I just now saw the clip of Hall smacking Petrino. "The Atlanta Falcons were just a stepping stone for him to go to Arkansas."

That cracked me up.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

DeAngelo Hall seems like a cool guy ... is that true, Ade, or am I blinded by how much I love him right now?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of divided allegiance -- I went to MSU for four years and worked at Ole Miss for four years. College was kind of a wasted experience for me -- I wish I had done more with those years, but I was skating along on my dad's VA benefits and nobody really gave a shit about what I did as long as I didn't flunk out. Ole Miss was generally a happier time. But I left almost 10 years ago, so I don't really care one way or the other about either of them, except at Egg Bowl time (go dawgs!).

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

Damn. I can't tease you for having Houston Nutt in your vicinity then.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

The funnest part of not giving a shit was joking with Van Chancellor (an MSU graduate and Ole Miss' winningest coach) on live radio about how whenever Ole Miss needs to get the job done right, they hire a State graduate. He changed the subject pretty quick.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

tbh, with these hyped college-to-NFL coaches i see this shit coming from day 1. most of these guys seem to have huge egos--even relative to typical coach egos--that can't deal with a season as awful as, say, 9-7 let alone 3-10.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

how many college coaches have been successful in the pros? john mckay, john robinson, tom coughlin are the only three that come to mind.

nfln was showing a press conference with Arthur Blank et. al. just now. Blank was asked if he feels used and he said he feels "abused." poor dude.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

it's rare that I'm going to feel sorry for an owner having a shit year but yeah. I mean on TOP of having to spend his Monday night watching his team get jacked up at home and talking to Tony Kornheiser after his $$$ QB got sentenced to two years, he has to put up with this. Merry Xmas, Mr. Blank.

he's kind of a bitch, tbh

best player in the secondary tho

idk if singletary is the right guy, tho part of me is stoked abt the idea. the thing is the falcons have needed a strong personnel guy since ruskell left (mckay's a good gm with a great understanding of draft value and that kinda thing, but he's not a very good personnel guy) and a coach who really knows about team building and scouting (like marty or parcells~~~) seems like a good fit 2 me~

singletary's a much more realistic option tho

cankles, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

lawyer milloy just called petrino a 'cancer' on the radio... sounds like he's ready to beat that wop motherfucker up~

Boo hoo hoo. Rats may leave a sinking ship first, but that only means that they're the smart ones.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

i am not exactly flush with sympathy for arthur blank btw. a TON of people around the league warned him and mckay abt petrino (cf. secret meeting w/auburn foax back in the louisville days)... it's like when u warn ur best friend about the flaky girl he's marrying, only for them to have an ugly divorce a few months later. u feel for the nigga, but he's a grown ass man and can make his own decisions~~~

cankles, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

There was some supergenius coaching decisions made by both sides in that 49ers/Bengals game. Maybe Marv Lewis felt bad about Nolan going for it on that stupid 4th & 2 instead of kicking a field goal so he burned one of his time outs on a dumb challenge to even things up.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 December 2007 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

that was a pretty horrible game. my first real look at pat willis this season tho - dude's legit. also should be a real DPOY contender, not just DROY.

san diego might as well be al pacino, because they are CRUISING.

polyphonic, Sunday, 16 December 2007 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

We will double down! I don't know what that means.

the game was utter, complete madness. Everything was in slow motion like you were watching old NFL film from the 50's. But here's the thing- PHIL DAWSON KICKED A 48 YARD FIELD GOAL. He hit that bar just like in the Ravens game.

Back story: I rolled out of bed at 11 and there wasn't any snow at all. When I got out of the shower it was like Charlie Weiss himself had ripped open his innards. Finding my way home after the game was harder than trying to find Tom Brady's porn stash.

brownie, Sunday, 16 December 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

Deon is entertaining, but the dude's calls are a bit crazy as he was with Nolan on going for it on fourth down. I think Faulk is a bit more lucid with his commentary and the guy nailed a few play calls including the draw that ended the game last night.

So can we officially start the t-minus countdown until T.O. starts throwing Romo underneath the bus?

earlnash, Monday, 17 December 2007 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

He hit that bar just like in the Ravens game.

oh shiiiit, really? phil dawson is such a pimp. browns are becoming my fav afc team.

johnny crunch, Monday, 17 December 2007 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

Deon is entertaining, but the dude's calls are a bit crazy as he was with Nolan on going for it on fourth down. I think Faulk is a bit more lucid with his commentary and the guy nailed a few play calls including the draw that ended the game last night.

disagree completely, faulk was the one coming off as a bit lazy while deion avoided obvious storyline-hyping cliches about nate clements "winning" the matchup against chad johnson, instead pointing out the various coverages they were using against him and that clements was never actually manned up against 85. I was impressed by how he pointed out Carson was locked into a read before the snap, and how he called pass going for 85 on consecutive plays. as an analyst he was just really sharp, not to mention the kooky-entertaining factor.

cankles, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

it was also nice to hear deion criticize carson. gumbel was just saying the duo (carson and ocho) were out of sync and deion (rightly) said well 85 is running good routes, getting good seperation & carson is missing him so you've got to put more on CP that chad. that said, chad REALLY needed to catch the td pass in the left corner of the end zone. carson lay that shit in the PERFECT.

johnny crunch, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

well he wasnt just 'missing' him like he was overthrowing him or anything, he was clearly anticipating different routes than the ones CJ was running. i tend to side with chad on this but it did kinda appear that they were just not on the same page.

cankles, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

also, i really dont think t.j. is a pro-bowl/1-a calliber receiver and all the focus on him during that game was pissin me off.

johnny crunch, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

yyyeah me too actually. i was pissed that nobody pointed out that, hey, he has more catches but fewer yards than chad - meaning he has less value per catch~~~

cankles, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't watched the Bengals at all this year, but in previous years it just seemed like TJ was the more sure-handed of the two. And while 30-yard completions are nice, it's also nice to have a guy who can pile up the 5-10 yarders that keep the chains moving.

Read this cool article about the 1987 replacement Chargers. They were 3-0 for a team that was otherwise 5-7 that year, a team that didn't have a winning record in any year between 1983 and 1993. Rick Neuheisel was on that team as the star QB.

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 December 2007 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

TJ has better hands and being a bigger receiver, is a bit better at hauling in catches in traffic than Chad Johnson.

It seems that the TV narrative is trying to make the Bengals problems about Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson. The Cinci passing attack is easily not their most pressing issue. Palmer has thrown a few more interceptions this year and Johnson has dropped some very catchable passes, including a more than a couple in the end zone. That being said, the injuries to Rudi Johnson and their offensive line, especially Willie Anderson has had them a bit out of synch all year. Cinci has also had a knack for making stupid plays in the red zone, whether it be turnovers, false starts, holding, etc. They move the ball up and down the field and come away with a field goal or sometimes less way too often.

Which does not help their main problem, being that the Bengals defense does not get turnovers, pass rush and gets run down in long drives. They have again this year had their linebackers get completely decimated and are starting a complete crew of guys mostly that have been brought in off the waiver wire since the season started. Cinci has had to play from behind way too often and for them to win the offense would have to been nearly perfect, which it definitely is not.

This year's Bengals reminds me quite a bit of Mora's last year with the Colts. Marvin Lewis will be back next year, but you can go ahead and light the fuse.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

I should have also noted, that TJ definitely doesn't have Chad Johnson's speed. I think they are a pretty good pair and are even better when they can keep Chris Henry off of the suspension list.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

Give Toon a break, poor guy's brains are mashed potatoes.

Petrino's a total snake. Rumor had it this morning that Saban's folks contacted West Virginia about that job. Has to be true, you can't make up something that fucked up.
