Now Coach Gibbs has resigned in DC! Can Snyder lure Cowher out of retirement?
How now ATL and MIA?
― j.q higgins, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)
josh mcdaniels took his name out of consideration a week or two ago, what other coordinators might be getting a shot?
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
a lot of people are high on dallas coordinators (sparano, bowles and garrett), i'd expect that gregg williams will get looks if he does not end up w/ the job in washington and russ grimm seems to get a lot of play.
― j.q higgins, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
i don't really pay attention to the coordinators of other teams and except for the dude in dallas who's rumored to be the apple of the tuna's eye i have no idea who's up for jobs.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)
You gotta think that Rex Ryan will get the gig in Baltimore. Maybe he'd hire his brother as his new DC?
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
i thought rob ryan was going to the jets to be dc under mangini, his old boss in new england?
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
ha! funny thing is, in b'more they're apparently also talking to baby schottenheimer.
"if he's not a legacy coach, we don't want anything to do w/ him!"
― j.q higgins, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)
so monty kiffin is free, is him going to oakland to coach under his son a done deal? would anyone consider him for a hc position? and if so would he rather do that than work with his kid?
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
I heard a rumor that Davis was going to axe Kiffin Jr.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)
I think they had a big argument. Kiffin wanted to fire Ryan and hire someone of his own choosing, but Davis overruled him. Apparently it wasn't pretty!
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
Stupid move by Davis, real stupid. Let the head coach hire his own assistants. What a third rate organization. commitment to excellence my ass.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
the rumor right now is that Arthur Blank is aggressively courting PETE FUCKING CARROLL. he'd never take the job tho, thank god. fuck dat nigga, i saw what he did the first time around.
imo the most likely candidates for the Falcons HC job are singletary and jim caldwell; I'd REALLY prefer Caldwell. marty's probably not a real option.
― cankles, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)
al davis is like the fidel castro of the nfl now. totally irrelevant and seeming like the world has passed him by.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
Pete Carroll has it made at USC. IF he leaves, he deserves whatever kind of trouble befalls him.
I wanna see Singletary finally get a HC position, and ATL seems like a place where he could sort of build without pressure.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)
They're on record that Singletary's not in the running for the Falcons job. I'd like to see him get a chance, he was a coach on the field for the Bears.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
ban arthur blank
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 January 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
I think Singletary needs to be a DC before he'll get a coaching gig.

― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)
erm, i think the idea is to match whatever dollar offer and keep him as OC
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
i dunno, wade didn't get a vote of confidence BEFORE they lost to the giants...
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
Johnny, that's my point. Why pay Garret head coach money and keep Phillips. He'd be gone.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)
sparano to miami.
the rubber match in the dallas coach poach!
― j.q higgins, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)
I wonder what Phillips' coaching staff will look like next year if Garrett leaves? Enter Cam Cameron? Norm Chow?
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
Tom Dimitroff's been hired as the new Falcons GM. This is tremendously, hugely thrilling for me (lol :(), and one of the best moves they've made in years - for those who don't know, he's the director of college scouting for the Patriots, and for a while has been THE key personnel guy in NE. Pioli's not a real talent evaluator and Belichick leans a lot on his top college guy (ie. Tom), he has a rep for being a super bright guy and a tireless worker. Rich McKay's biggest weakness has always been personnel (this front office really misses Tim Ruskell) but is great with a lot of other business-related stuff, so it seems like a perfect fit.
― cankles, Thursday, 17 January 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

from what the globe reported last week his main job was winnowing their draft list from 4,000 names to about 400. then pioli and belicheck made the decisions.

from espn:
Dallas head coach Wade Phillips has been informed that Jason Garrett will turn down head coaching opportunities with the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens and remain as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.A source credits owner Jerry Jones with convincing Garrett to remain in Dallas: "This is huge because changing systems right now would have been really tough on Tony Romo."Garrett has informed the Ravens and Falcons of his decision to stay in Dallas. The Ravens are now turning their attention to Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh, who is expected to get his second interview Thursday.Sources told ESPN.com that Garrett, who spent several hours meeting with Atlanta officials earlier in the day, huddled with Jones on Wednesday night. Garrett met with the Ravens on Monday night and part of the day Tuesday before flying to Atlanta for a follow-up session. The Cowboys could offer Garrett a substantial raise and the tacit promise that he will eventually succeed Phillips within the next couple years. In 2004, Jones convinced both his coordinators at the time, Sean Payton on offense and Mike Zimmer on defense, to bypass head coaching opportunities and stay with the Cowboys. Payton had been offered the Oakland Raiders' head coaching position and Zimmer the job at the University of Nebraska. It is believed the Ravens formally offered Garrett their head coach job, at a salary of less than $3 million annually. Sources told ESPN.com's Matt Mosley that the Falcons' job is Garrett's if he wants it. The Falcons have also been seriously considering former Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who met with club executives on Monday for a second time, and who is held in high regard. Both the Falcons and Ravens lost a candidate on Wednesday when Indianapolis assistant head coach Jim Caldwell withdrew his name from consideration for the vacancies. The move, first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen, fueled immediate speculation that Caldwell removed himself because he is about to be named the successor to Tony Dungy. But Dungy told Mortensen that he has not yet made a decision on his future and likely will not before the weekend. League sources said Caldwell's action was motivated more by the reality that he was probably not viewed as more than the No. 3 candidate by both Atlanta and Baltimore officials. One reason for a second interview between Garrett and Atlanta executives is that the Falcons did not have a general manager when they huddled with him for the first time on Jan. 4. On Saturday, however, Atlanta hired Patriots college scouting director Thomas Dimitroff as its new general manager, and he will have considerable input into the selection of the head coach. The Falcons' vacancy was created when Bobby Petrino resigned with three games remaining in his first season as an NFL head coach, to fill the vacancy at the University of Arkansas.Atlanta has interviewed five other candidates for the position. If the team is still without a new coach by the weekend, and New York loses at Green Bay in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, the Falcons probably will seek permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The Falcons made such a request earlier, but the Giants rebuffed it because of the team's status in the playoffs.Even as he faced the specter of losing Garrett as his coordinator, Jones was attempting on Wednesday to retain several assistant coaches whose contracts are about to expire, and who are rumored to be candidates for staff positions in Miami, where Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano on Wednesday was hired as the Dolphins' new coach.Jones has offered contract extensions to secondary coach Todd Bowles, linebackers coach Paul Pasqualoni, and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers.Ed Werder is a reporter for ESPN. Information from ESPN.com's Matt Mosley and Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.

translation: jerry jones dumped a shitload of money at jason garrett's doorstep. this is the owner-coach negotiation tactic known as "snyder's gambit."

Arthur Blank has become the Wile E. Coyote of NFL owners~

well, belichick always has final say on anything personnel related. what i was made to understand from hearing chris landry talk abt it on the radio - landry is a scout who worked under belichick in cleveland and ran the indy combine for years - is that BB leans more on dimitroff for player evaluation, whereas pioli prob has more input in the decision making based on that evaluation~
― cankles, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i didn't mean to infer that he was useless, i mean he's been with belicheck since cleveland so obviously he relies on the guy.

fascinatin' ass article comparing the organizational structures of the pats and the colts
FRONT OFFICE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTUREThe Patriots’ entire football operations are run by head coach Bill Belichick. Much has been made of vice-president Scott Pioli’s role but he serves only as an administrator of Belichick’s decisions. Decisions such as whom to draft or whom to sign in free agency all fall with Belichick who consults with his scouts and assistant coaches. Player contracts and salary cap issues are areas that Belichick has not only final say on but is active in setting the price range for each player with general council Jack Mula handling all legal affairs. The Colts’ front office structure is under the leadership of general manager Bill Polian. It is he that has all final say on player personnel and roster moves. Tony Dungy, an astute evaluator of talent, works closely with Polian and director of football operations Dom Anile. The decisions that the Colts make are more collective whereas the Patriots decision-making process is dominated by Belichick.

Hell, if I owned a team right now in ATL's situation, I'd hire the fucking Pats' waterboy.
That article really takes some of the air out of Pioli's sails.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)
The Falcons should make a run at Saban just for lolz sake.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)
hey i'm sure pioli's really good at... whatever the hell he does, but it just needs to be stressed that the pats = belly bell's team.
not getting caldwell is a bummer 2 me, i have a FEELING abt that guy. maybe jim l mora will come back :(
― cankles, Thursday, 17 January 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
I think hiring Pioli is important just in the sense that you need to do whatever you can to weaken the Patriots. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, but at least try. Tell Pioli "You're hired as long as you take a lot of people with you".
Definitely don't trade them Welker within the division when they have a weakness at WR, ffs.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)
That was sorta incoherent. Mainly I mean that someone needs to hire that guy away from the Pats... I know the Falcons hired the other dude.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think pioli will leave until belicheck does. he's had offers before and he's always turned them down. he's always said he prefers the set up he's got in new england. i'm sure once he's not working with belicheck he'll go out on his own.
i read his bio and in cleveland pioli had dimitroff's position in cleveland before he was promoted to director of pro personnel. he was director of pro personnel w/the jests and followed belicheck to new england as assistant director of player personnel before becoming director then vice president of player personnel.
i wonder if he'd ever go work for his father in law?
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)
That would be a lateral move. He probably would want to run an organization himself. I don't know if you're a Bears fan, ck, but I am, and I'd welcome him with open arms.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 January 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)
i'm a pats fan but a bears follower. i doubt mrs. mccaskey has the smarts or interest to turn the reigns over to anyone who wasn't a long time bear.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 January 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
so a 71 y.o. dick vermeil is being rumored for the skins job??

do they have a predisposition to signing elder coaches out of retirement or something?

"i doubt mrs. mccaskey has the smarts or interest to turn the reigns over to anyone who wasn't a long time bear."
Great. God, I wish they would sell the team. Chicago is really cursed on the sports ownership front, Wirtz, McCaskey, Trib etc.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)
I just saw this on Wiki (plz god, let it ring true):
"As of October 2007, it is rumored that Vermeil will replace Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football on ESPN at seasons end."
