what a dumbass

shawne***********************

isn't it in the best interest of the chargers to put him on the PUP list? why are they going to be complicit in what could possibly be the end of his career? how does this make any sense at all for anyone involved?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it depends on whether it's the sort of thing that can get worse if you play on it or not. When Rivers played on his injury in the playoffs, they said it probably wouldn't get worse as a result ... the damage was done, and either he dealt with it or didn't.

But yeah, it's retarded.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

Merriman said Saturday that he has been told by doctors that he could suffer a possible career-ending injury if he attempts to play without having surgery.

this is like assisted suicide on the chargers part

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

i understand that the chargers were really close to making the super bowl last year but its not like their window is closing anytime soon.

their nucleus is like rivers, LT, chambers, gates, jackson, castillo, merriman, cromartie. all of these guys have multiple years left in their primes!!

this is just mind blowingly bone headed to me

SHAWNE MERRIMAN IS JUDGING THE 2008 MISS USA PAEGANT

i think this was one of my better threads

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

Norv Turner is an asshole who knows that if the Chargers fuck it up this year, he'll be fired. Actually I don't know if this is right, but I suspect this is what's going on. Is this a contract year for Merriman?

Euler, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's a contract year, but a lot of the guys Jordan mentioned are not signed past the following year. There was a minor hubbub when the Chargers signed Castillo long-term before Merriman, though.

Also, Turner probably won't get fired after this year. They were in the AFC Championship game last year, and Smith loves him. Even the fans like him now.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

you're probably right, but I think expectations are really high for the Chargers this year. I didn't know about the owner loving Turner---that blows my mind, as he seems like such a mediocre hack to me (but I like Schottenheimer a lot)

Euler, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

Is he a mediocre hack, though? His Redskins teams featured Gus Frerotte/Heath Shuler at QB, Terry Allen at RB, and an ancient Henry Ellard at WR on offense, with a defense led by the ancient Darrell Green and cast of dudes who aren't going to be getting hall of fame votes anytime soon, at a time when the Cowboys and 49ers were quite formidable. When they brought in Brad Johnson and Stephen Davis the team improved quite a bit, but then they fired him midseason and replaced him with Robiske.

And he really didn't have a chance in Oakland. No one does.

But I guess he seems like a boring guy.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

schefter thinks merriman's going through with it because of some escalators in his current contract, but that's just speculation

cankles, Thursday, 28 August 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

The theory I heard on the radio as a possible explanation on Merriman's lunacy is that the injury would really effect him more having to back pedal or cut, but moving forward should not be that impended. This means that a straight end pass rusher like Shawne Merriman might be able to work, somewhat. In doing that most NFL players that have this surgery lose a step or two and since Merriman's has one more year on his contract, the theory is that he hopes he has a big year get 10+ sacks then somehow play this into a contract extension, instead of getting surgery then coming back 'slow' not getting 10+ sacks and not getting an extension. It still sounds like insanity to me, but just going by what I have seen after the play ends from Merriman, the dude might not be playing with a full deck.

The dude obviously doesn't seem have a problem with needles, so you can scratch that out as an excuse for not having surgery.

expect a lot of runs right at merriman this year then.

Countdown to "I just had to try, you know?"

This thread title is the truth bomb of the month.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, this sucks. I live in an AFC West tv market so we get the Chargers a lot, and I was hoping they'd be Super Bowl material this year (despite qb). This makes it a little less likely I think.

Euler, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

Retired, though he could've done it 3 years ago without anyone noticing.

11. Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Ware, OLB, Troy State
12. San Diego Chargers, Shawne Merriman, OLB, Maryland

Not quite Manning/Leaf, but still hurts.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 20:31 (twelve years ago)

Well Merriman was at least great for a couple of years and injuries happen. This is pretty much example that every player is one bad play away from being done.

I'd have to think that 2006 Chargers club could be a good club for that "missing rings" series, even though the story went on for a few years afterwards. That club was freaking loaded everywhere AND had tossed away Drew Brees from the season before.

SD is a beautiful ocean town with some honest rust belt football fan angst, at least for the fans that care.

earlnash, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 23:00 (twelve years ago)

he was okay as a pass rusher but he sucked at everything else, and he sucked at everything once he stopped roiding.

Chargers fans are mostly bullshit, and I say this as a lifelong fan.
