As of this week, who is the league MVP?

At various times throughout the season, it's been Carson Palmer, Ladainian Tomlinson, & maybe even Dwight Freeney. But if you could cast a vote today for league MVP, who would it be?

My vote goes to Shaun Alexander. He's been pretty much unstoppable all season. Each week his numbers seem to get gaudier.

Giants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

For MVP consideration, I want a player who is on a winning team that simply wouldn't be winning without that player on their team. LT is hurt by the presence of Gates, Dwight by the offensive Hall of Famers he's surrounded by on offense, Carson's got the Johnsons. Shaun's splitting MVP with Hass
But could Dallas be 6-3 without Drew Bledsoe? Highly unlikely. Considering how far he's come and his past and the fact that he has the highest QB rating in the league and the talent he's surrounded with and that dem Boys are number one in the division and I'm goin' with Bledsoe.
Guy needs a nickname. "Bedsore"?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna second the Shaun Alexander nom, but I'm partial because he once played for the Tide.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

yes, Shaun Alexander, because he's on pace for 30 rushing TDs and 2000yds and he needs more respect.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

oh quiet man, I still almost had you with NO TDs FROM MY RUNNING BAXXX

seriously, though, is the MVP always awarded to the dude with the gaudiest statistics? uh, no.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

oh and it's some bullshit that I only got 6 points from nathan vasher this week, dude ran 108 yards on one play and yahoo counts it the same as if he fell on a fumble in the other team's end zone, eff that

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

haha .. yeah I was wondering about that. Every league I have been in, we count return yardage on things like punt returns, kick returns , and INTs and fumble if they result in TDs. not sure what's up, if that's a league setting that can be tweaked... I agree with you though, you should get that. And I was angry as hell as I watched that pathetic SF defense..

not to mention that GARBAGE TD you got from Antonio Bryant on Sunday night! boy was I steamed about that one too... freakin' Pittsburgh man..

But yeah, I would have to go with Shaun. and *not* because I have him on my fantasy team. He was the first player that came to mind when I saw the thread title. I dunno, who the hell is Seattle, really, without him? I mean, I still think they suck but they win games because of him.

and I'm not even that big of a fan. I've kind of secretly wanted him to do bad. But only to erase the heartache; he would have been a Detroit Lion but the hated Holmgren stole him one pick before the Lions picked, so we grabbed for lardtub Stockar McDougle. just like he used to do in GB when he freakin stole Vonnie Holliday one pick before us, and we were stuck with the worthless Terry Fair. But I sure did enjoy watching Shaun at Bama and knew was gonna be a player so big ups to him. was seriously bummed when Bama lost to LSU this week..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure it counts if a garbage team wins garbage games, let's at least wait until later in the season to see if the seahawks can win anything important

i'd vote for cato june myself but then i'm a defense guy

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

They never give these things to O-linemen, do they? Because the guys blocking for Shaun Alexander are doing some pretty spectacular work.

Steve Smith probably deserves a mention on this thread as well.

It's almost always a QB award. Sometimes, every four or five years a RB will get it. Last non QB/RB to win MVP was Lawrence Taylor in 1986. Before that, I have no idea.

Last RB to win was Marshall Faulk. I think this is Shaun Alexander's year, if he keeps it up. Of course, next week we could all be talking about Jake Delhomme or Carson Palmer.

Giants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think shaun alexander's the frontrunner right now - dude's fucking incredible plus the seahawks are having a very good year and it ain't cuz of fucking hasselhoff. if the pats win 10-11 games brady's gonna get some consideration. if colts finish with 14 or more wins peyton's obviously in the conversation.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Would it be stupid to think that Urlacher will get consideration if the Bears back into first in the NFC North?

HOLY JESUS SHAUN!

i'm with peyton manning or alexander as well...blount otm....

the vikings mvp=our rookie punter! for serious!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Alexander or Manning seem the obvious choices. It's kinda hard to say this point in the season though. I know it's half done but if the Colts suddenly drop 3 games in a row then Manning is out in my mind.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Alexander's numbers may be a short bit better, but I think LT has underscored in the past two weeks that he is the best player in football and has done it against a way tougher schedule than the Seahawks.

Criminy...LT has even thrown for 3 TD's this season.

Even after the Broncos loss, I'm still thinking Bledsoe. If they win NFC East, definitely.

I think one could make a heck of a case for Carson Palmer for MVP after yesterday.

68.7 completion percentage!
26 TDs w/ only 7 Ints
262 yards a game (3149 total)

This is with a guy with only about 20 or so starts in the NFL. It is pretty impressive.

earlnash, Monday, 5 December 2005 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

chad johnson just said 'carson's the mvp' on dan patrick. and people listen to chad johnson.

IN UR BASE KILLING ALL UR DUDES (Adrian Langston), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Carson Palmer is easily in the top 3 for MVP. I think it's now a tossup between Palmer, Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander. The next four games will decide it.

Giants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Brad Johnson should be somewhere in the discussion, too.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 16 December 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

I've come around to John Maddens way of thinking that it is hard to argue against Peyton Manning again for MVP, especially if they win out. Manning over took Palmer as the top rated QB two weeks ago. It could change, but Manning kind of quietly took that stat over after his slow start.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

BUT...the Colts also have Edgerrin James, who has a zillion yards this season.

If I had a vote, I'd vote for Shaun Alexander. He probably will end up winning, especially if Seattle locks up home field.

Giants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Friday, 16 December 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

After today, Shaun Alexander is MVP. He deserves some respect. Seattle only has 1 more loss than the Colts!

Rashan Salaam, Monday, 19 December 2005 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

Prolly Shaun, yeah ... but fuck, Carson .. Peyton .. even that fuckin Snake .. and how about TIKI ??? where is the Tiki talk?? this guy is having the best year of his entire CAREER, forget about Eli for cryin out loud..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 19 December 2005 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'd go with Shaun Alexander.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 19 December 2005 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

Tiki deserves MVP votes as he has only fumbled once this year!!! That is harder to believe than him running for 200 yards last week.

earlnash, Monday, 19 December 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't he something like 74% of the Giants offensive production on Saturday? Amazing.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm leaning to Tiki myself now.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

He'll never get it cos he's not "media" enough, though perhaps his inclusion in Fox's "Sexiest Man In The NFL" battle will increase his media share???

He's kind of shockingly underrated; he's stastically having a better season than a lot of the talked up backs this year.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Things Tiki has to overcome:

- years of splitting carries w/ other backs
- the Warrick Dunn falacy ("you can't handle the workload or between-tackles running blah blah blah")
- the perception of being a chronic fumbler
- being Thee Guy on a team w/ higher profile guys (cf. Shockey, Eli, maybe even Plaxico & Strahan?)
- being "the ugly Barber brother"

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

- Splitting carries is a common practice (though keep in mind that he still has an extremely high career yards gained)
- Who says this?
- One fumble this year, so I don't know what that has to do with the here and now
- Am I the only person who thinks Shockey is really playing terribly lately??? He can't catch a ball and that ain't ALL Eli's fault. Dude is dropping passes right in the numbers, constantly. Jeremey Shockey should seriously go fuck himself. Yeah, keep complaining how Eli is "missing" you out there, maybe he's "avoiding" your butter hands. Eli, Plaxico, and Strahan are cute like kittens though and are yummy!
- SHUT YO MOUTH

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

- being Thee Guy on a team w/ higher profile guys (cf. Shockey, Eli, maybe even Plaxico & Strahan?)

xpost - shockey seems like the only one whose ego's big enough for it to bother him. during the game saturday, cbs showed burress going over to congratulate tiki after his 2nd td.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

For the record, I heart Tiki.

I was thinking more of things Tiki has HAD to overcome (& stuff that might still be dogging him) (or in the case of not being the media dahling that J-Shock & Eli might be, things that are out of his control) (don't change, Tiki). Re: splitting carries - I was thinking primarily of the horseshit Dunder & Lightning days, where Ron Dayne was getting way too much love (because no one told Tiki how to hold the damn ball until last year). & I know some folks, during the Dunder & Lightning heyday, said that Tiki would work great as part of a carry-splitting duo because he couldn't handle the responsibility or punishment that a full-time back takes (& because no one told Tiki how to hold the damn ball until last year.)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

those last two sentences are, like, the same sentence.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

(because no one told Tiki how to hold the damn ball until this year)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

No, I know the context and everything, but what I'm saying is that there is such a stark difference between "things he had to overcome" and his performance this year that it is a damn shame that it's not being recognized more than it is. I mean, damn, to be honest with you I wouldn't trade Tiki for 2 LTs and I'm serious about that at this point in the season. Err nonwithstanding the ankle thing.

I've come to decide that Shockey is incredibly punchable and I'd like to punch him. Is that why he's such a media darling? Because he's a big ass?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

More or less. Besides, how can you hate a guy that drops key 3rd down passes, yet gets JACKED UP about catching some dipshitty 2nd-and-25 5-yard dump off?

The Giants could be much worse off with loudmouth former Miami TE's, they could be like the Browns saddled with Kellen Winslow Jr.

earlnash, Monday, 19 December 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Kellen Winslow Jr. got bushwacked by a knee injury while on special teams. That isn't exactly something you can prep for. For all you know, Shockey could get clonked by a helmet during some horseshit post-catch celebration and die of cancer.

Tiki and Tom and Peyton and Edge and Larry and Urlacher and Carson all deserve mention, but how can you not give it to Alexander? His team's receiving corp this year was Bobby Engram and Joe Jurevicius, fer crissakes.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

His team's receiving corp this year was Bobby Engram and Joe Jurevicius, fer crissakes.

But wouldn't this be an argument for Hasselback as well? Not that I know much about it, having seen zero Seattle games this year. This is what Dr. Z says, however:

Once again, the Pro Bowl-voting fans have it exactly wrong. QB Hasselbeck is stiffed for New York's Manning, who showed some deep disturbing flaws against the Chiefs on Sunday. But in the RB department, the Giants' Barber must watch the Hawks' Alexander step to the podium, although there's no doubt in my mind that Tiki's the better player.

yeah he's having a solid year, after last year's receiver woes in seattle solid is a definite upgrade. still gimme a break on hasselhoff luv - alexander's the stud there (i'll take him over tiki easy too - bama vs virginia? PLZ). he's winning the mvp for sure now too. i'd maybe vote for urlacher though - that bears d is scary as hell. in fact they're my pick in the nfc - i'm leaning super bowl xl = super bowl xx (in terms of teams in it only, not results). i know for damn sure it ain't gonna be the seahawks. in fact I GUARANTEE THE SUPERBOWL WILL NOT BE DENVER-SEATTLE. I forget what he'd have to do. Was he on probation? This was his service, and if any kid failed it was the clink? I forget.

By the way (speaking of MNF), Launch Yahoo is playing Shooter Jennings right now: He used to hang around GN'R, is cashing in on the family name by going country, some of which sounds like Charlie Daniels–Hank Jr. but with touches of Blue Cheer's hippopotamus stomp.
