esp. if you're coming from college, you might as well save yourself the two years and take an offensive coordinator job with a pac-10 team right out

i think al davis makes all of the above look quite sane. that article is ridiculous.

is the dicky betts wannabe rob ryan? seriously, dude..shine on, you crazy diamond.

a million years ago (well, like 13 years ago) when i was dating this hippie girl we went to see the allman bros. band and dickey betts was so drunk that after the intermission they had to set up a chair on stage for him because he couldn't stand up. but he still played the rest of their interminable set because along with being a drunk HE'S A PROFESSIONAL.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

this is a thing that is good about Ade & company's blog. i always wondered whether Raiders fans approved of Al Davis or what. apparently they are just as disgusted as the rest of us:

apropos of nothing, i would like to say that my favorite America's Game is the one about the Raiders where that intense Mormon dude gets all choked up recalling Marcus Allen "running with the night." that's my favorite instance of man-love of the whole series, which is saying something because it is all manlove all the time. also it succeeds in making Howie Long seem kind of beautiful and tragic rather than the douchebag he seems like on Fox NFL Sunday. also it is narrated by Alec Baldwin. i feel for Raiders fans; it must be hard to come to terms with the contemporary team reality.

horseshoe, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, it'a hard to believe that howie long was a bad ass and make no mistake about it: he was!

j.q higgins, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

there is a moment where he sort of detachedly acknowledges that he played the way he played because he grew up terrified and insecure because of unspecified family problems. i know i am a sap but it gets me.

horseshoe, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

howie long grew up in the housing projects of charlestown, ma in the 70s during the race riot/forced busing/desegregation era in boston. he got into a lot of trouble and i believe was shipped off to live with his maternal uncle in medway or one of those tiny towns near rhode island when he was in high school. i seem to recall the option was go live with your uncle or go to juvenile detention. anyway, it was down there he started playing football and went from focusing his rage on the general population of the commonwealth of massachusetts to the specific population who played high school football.

i'm pretty sure the fact that he had some personal issues was the reason that villanova was the only school that really recruited him.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

wow i never knew that!

horseshoe, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

huh, his wiki entry has two things that kind of stand out:

1. "Long also boxed at Villanova and was the Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Boxing Champion."

and

o_O "He will not fly on the same plane as his wife for fear of orphaning their children."

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

what if him and his wife and kids all fly on the same plane? will he not drive in the same car as her as well? not stay in the same room? i think he just doesn't like his wife.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

on a lighter note (also from the wiki entry)...

Currently Long works as a studio analyst for the FOX Network's NFL coverage, where he often plays the "straight man" to the comic antics of co-host Terry Bradshaw.

yes. "comic antics," indeed! if it's hard to believe that howie was a badass, it's even harder to believe that terry bradshaw was a professional athlete.

Essentially, Asomugha had to reach certain incentives to keep his contract from being voided. That included either a) playing more snaps in 2010 than 2009 or b) improving upon his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks from 2009.

That means Asomugha, who's one of the best defensive players in the NFL and, depending on how you feel about Darrelle Revis, possibly the best cornerback in the NFL will be a free agent whenever free agency picks back up after labor negotiations are settled.

New terrifying Al Davis photos

Maltodextrin, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 07:45 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I guess it says something that he's more than willing to make a public appearance in that state. He could've just done a voice appearance (like Charlie's Angels).

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

Not quite sure why anybody would want to work for the Raiders, if you are going to get docked pay/sued/have your contract reneged.

Nice way to get talented people to come to your team, Al.

things ive noticed:

there's no Hd video of al davis on the internet... its like all the media made a pact... we must not show this nigga in 1080p... it would change the world... like the vatican hiding some bible passages or some shit

Continuity: During the press conference, Al davis is seen mouthing words but the audio doesn't start until after 5 seconds

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

The only 'positive' takeaway from this is that Al can still speak extemporaneously. The fact that his extemporaneity is largely rambling rants against former coaches, well, yeah not so positive.

Cable lifted the team, lifted the fans and did a service to the organization as a coach. That Al would sit there and shit all over that bc of $$ and personal axegrinding infuriates me.

For a man that keeps the organization as locked down as North Korea to still quite happily...nay gleefully, air all of his ugly nasty dirty laundry about his personal vendettas in a press conference just boggles my mind.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

Getting old sucks.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 January 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

I never saw the press conference, but from what they were talking about it on the radio, the old guy was pretty forthright on a bunch of issues and kind of shot from the hip on a bunch of things. They made it sound like he was aware and in charge (albeit maybe obsessed with the past).

earlnash, Thursday, 20 January 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that was the one takeaway...he's still lucid, did the whole thing without notes...and especially on the x's and o's, mechanics of football he was very detailed and obviously still as passionate about that as ever. It's not to where he is a shell of his former self, or in any kind of senile state...but he's going way more off res now, to the point where he needs a bit of corralling. How one does that? No idea.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 20 January 2011 05:45 (fourteen years ago)

The guy's gotta be made a figurehead there, or be removed altogether. the Raider mystique I remember as a kid is completely gone.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Thursday, 20 January 2011 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

It's Al's club, what can you do? Hey Al and the Raiders were great for a good long time. If he hadn't had got into a battle with Chucky ran him out of town and had gotten busted on that fluke ass call in that NE game, they might have won a Superbowl in the decade. They have been bad for 6-7 years, but it isn't like a Bidwell Cardinals setup.

I think they get the right guy at coach that Al feels good with, things will go OK. Thing is that it is an odd situation.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 January 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

to think how different the league would be now if Bledsoe never gets hurt in week 2 of 2001.

The Cardinals almost won a Super Bowl recently themselves.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 January 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

I think Bill Bidwell's son is kind of running the show now, so they are probably somewhat better off, but the old man was a terrible owner.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 January 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

Bidwell was incredibly cheap, but Davis has created a toxic workplace. But I don't know that much about Bidwell so I could be wrong.

polyphonic, Friday, 21 January 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I don't know anything about Bidwell. Care to drop some knowledge on me, earl?

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

Bidwell doesn't look like rizzo the rat, so that's one up he has on al davis

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Friday, 21 January 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)

Bidwell has owned the Cards since '62 and they have made the playoffs six times and that includes the two recent visits with Kurt Warner.

Raiders haven't been 'much' better, but some. And at least Al Davis was great once...
