yeah it was really awful
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
also, kurt warner led an impromptu prayer session between both teams
― cankles, Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)
fuck, w/27 seconds left. wtf dudes. what sort of play was it on?
― omar little, Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)
pass to the end zone, jets player is going to get hella fines for the hit too. who spears someone else in the neck?
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)
it was bad, there was no fucking around -- the ambulance was brought out basically immediately.
fuck, jets were up by 21 too. what a douche move to put it mildly.
― omar little, Sunday, 28 September 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
well they're the team that went for two on their last td (you know, the one that put them up by 21 in the last two minutes) so hey douchebaggery is apparently the name of the game.

espn chat, can't vouch for the veracity but:
Justin (Tempe, AZ): on the radio they said, anquan was talking and moving after the game. i dont have any other info though
SCOUTS INC.'S MATT WILLIAMSON: Wow. That is good to hear. Gotta love the way that guys plays the game and seems like a class act all around. Sometimes those things look much worse than they really are-lets hope so.
― omar little, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, he's got movement in the ol' "extremities."
― polyphonic, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
oh holy shit i just saw the hit. how is he alive?
― horseshoe, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)
i was talking about this with my brother, and he said that he thought that it actually was better for boldin that he got hit on both sides of his head because it prevented his head/neck from snapping really violently in either direction (which is what killed dale earnhardt). dunno if this is actually true or not but it seems to make some sense to me
― you have been yellow carded by an actual referee (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 September 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)
It's still dirty and I hope Eric Smith gets fined back to 1963.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)
If by 1963 you mean a one game suspension then yes.
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)
he should've been hung upside down in central park with david blaine.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
It's football, not chess. Shit like this happens. The suspension is fair, I don't think the fine is.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)
that's because you're completely nuts.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
bill magill why do you post on i love nfl when you so clearly hate nfl
― Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

just in case there was anyone laboring under the impression that the cards-jets game was a chess game

"bill magill is otm regarding: its football, not chess"
Damn, you're on fire today man.
I stand by it. The play on the opening kickoff last night was helmet to helmet as well, no talk (that I've seen) about that guy getting suspended. If you watch the Boldin play, he gets knocked foward, and down, by the defender behind him. Smith was aiming at his chest but got his head instead. I don't think the fine was warranted.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)
They fine based on result, not intent.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
which is stupid
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
did he intend to seriously injure the guy? no. was the hit dirty? yes, it was. i'm not sure how you are spinning this, i mean at best you're advocating chop blocking here.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)
how are you justifying the suspension is ok, if this is stupid?
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
You kind of can't spear someone with your helmet in the chest or the head.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
"did he intend to seriously injure the guy? no"
That's how I'm spinning it
"how are you justifying the suspension is ok, if this is stupid?"
the suspension is enough. Save the fines where there is intent.
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)
The suspension is generally considered the more serious form of punishment.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
I was just reading the AP report on this, yikes. I don't want to see any video of this hit because it sounds horrifying.
Warner, who threw for 472 yards but had five turnovers in the game, said he went to Boldin's side and told him he loved him. <--- waht
― i am the small cat (HI DERE), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
I hear Boldin is a great man, and Peter King told me that Warner likes to pick up the tab of random families having dinner in restaurants. Lotsa love on them Cards.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
\O_o/
the way you are "spinning" it still doesn't have anything to do with the fact that THE HIT WAS DIRTY. very few players mean to seriously injure people with dirty hits! that doesn't make it more acceptable. you might've only meant to burn down the old warehouse for insurance money, but if there were people inside the warehouse, you're still a murderer on top of an arsonist.
and yeah the whole "suspension is worse than fines" angle is generally how the nfl operates but whatever dude! you make up your own rules!
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, I said the suspension was worse because I was thinking Bill was arguing that the fine was worse since he said the suspension was "enough." This sort of confusion can happen when you must explain something slowly and deliberately.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)
No. He didn't intend to hit him in the head with his helmet. Being dirty is a question of intent. Here's Smith's take:
"'They just look at the end result, rather than everything that goes into the play,' Smith said of those who think it was a dirty hit. 'I'm coming to break up a pass and if I don't, it's going to be a touchdown. So, I'm going 100 percent and so is Kerry from the backside. Sometimes, somebody gets hit, angles change and things like that happen. It's not like I was directly leading with the top of my head from what I saw on the film.'"

For what it's worth, here's the rule:
using any part of a player’s helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/“hairline” parts)or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily; although suchviolent or unnecessary use of the helmet and facemask is impermissible against any opponent,game officials will give special attention in administering this rule to protecting thoseplayers who are in virtually defenseless postures (e.g., a player in the act of or just afterthrowing a pass, a receiver catching or attempting to catch a pass, a runner already in thegrasp of a tackler, a kickoff or punt returner attempting to field a kick in the air, or a playeron the ground at the end of a play). All players in virtually defenseless postures are protectedby the same prohibitions against use of the helmet and facemask that are describedin the roughing-the-passer rules (see Article 11, subsection 3 below of thisRule 12, Section 2);
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)
Leading with the helmet is dirty and fineable. Doesn't matter where he intended to hit him.
x-post thank you poly
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)
I usually don't like Peter King, but he agrees with my point namely that football, especially the NFL, is such a fast sport that things like this will happen:
"I know Jets safety Eric Smith will get fined for the helmet-to-helmet hit on Anquan Boldin, and I support the league trying to make the game safer. But it's impossible for a player to avoid another player when both are in full flight trying to make a play."
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)
haha so you're quoting the player who performed an illegal hit, and peter king. okay bro.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)
Both have probably forgotten more about football than you'll ever know!
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
ahahaha
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)
he wasn't trying to make a play on the ball! he clearly launched himself head first into boldin's head! this dude needs to remember to do 2 things that many other players remember to do:
1. don't lead with your head!2. don't hit a receiver in the head!
― poetry unit (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
No one is denying that "these things will happen." That does not preclude punishment. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.
― What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
temp ban why because you are stupid xposts
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
I feel that Smith was punished accordingly, but perhaps I should restrict my opinion to Springsteen.

i consider a suspension to be enough punishment, but read rule book before come back >:[
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
you can feel that smith is punished accordingly but please to use opinions other than "he did not mean to severely injure boldin therefore it is ok because hell it is not chess"
also please to not be unpleasant person in general all over the goddamned board >:[
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
once i killed a dude, with a knife, but i didnt mean to, on account of the angle, and things happening

The real question is why the fuck did Whisenhunt have Boldin on the field with 0:27 left in a blowout?
And yeah there is no doubt that football gods will smite the Jets later in the season for going for two there. All I ask is that it be against Buffalo.
― rogermexico., Thursday, 2 October 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)
also fractured sinus sounds like a funny non-injury (like turf toe) but fucking sucks and messes with your game (like turf toe)
― rogermexico., Thursday, 2 October 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)
"And yeah there is no doubt that football gods will smite the Jets later in the season for going for two there"
I agree with this completeley. What the hell was that about? Unless the kicker was hurt again, there's no reason for that.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 2 October 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)
