what the hell was that sportscenter ad last night where jim kelly lost a bet to a mascot and then the mascot ate his hall of fame jacket?

i can't find any youtube evidence that i actually saw this ad on my television. man poor jim kelly, he cannot win ANYTHING amirite.

seriously did anyone else see this or was that a dream i had.

OMG SCHEF I HAD THE EXACT SAME QUESTION!

so glad i did not imagine that ad. it makes me sad that jim kelly doesn't even get to talk in it? it seemed very mean-spirited to me. also, kelly sporting a little beer belly. i like that in a former football player.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

he just says "best 2 out of 3?" and then the mascot shakes his head and eats jim kelly's jacket. i have no idea what the hell was going on in it.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

oh right. i wasn't even sure it was jim kelly at first because it had such a throwaway feel. he just looked like some dude.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

What mascot is that, anyway?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

i know, it took me like 5 seconds to be like "wait that is jim kelly"

and i don't even know what mascot that is, i mean it was a giant terrifying shapeless blue blob.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

lol i am so defensive. when i recovered from the oddness of the commercial i was like, HOW DISRESPECTFUL HOW DARE THEY NOT PAY TRIBUTE TO THE GREATNESS OF JIM KELLY'S CAREER I MEAN IF THAT COMMERCIAL ACTUALLY HAPPENED WHICH I'M NOT COMPLETELY SURE ABOUT!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

The Blue Blob, a mascot of Xavier University, is shown eating Jim Kelly's NFL Hall of Fame jacket after beating him in rock paper scissors. Kelly then asks for best 2 out of 3, the Blue Blob declines.

okay, espn should stop letting stoned kids make their sportscenter commercials

omar little, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

Why is Jim Kelly even associating with a basketball mascot? Sportscenter office is a strange and fascinating place.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

i prefer my commercials bombastic/including that bearded pats fan, i.e. nfln commercials. none of this oblique shit.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I had NFLN. ;_;

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

although nfln has not really been bringing it this season, either. i don't like the "every day is like sunday" commercials as much as the "this is football" commercials from last season.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

I want to see another commercial with that smug Pats fan.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

he posts mostly on the politics threads these days fwiw

omar little, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

um why isn't "this is sportscenter" an actual tv show, every one of those is fucking awesome

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

From Sportscenter wiki:

"Big Red, the mascot of Western Kentucky University, is confused over which restroom to use until Dan Patrick instructs him to "use the woods out back."

Ha! I'd forgotten about that one.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

the best nfl network ad is the nfl replay one where they had a pile of players singing and dancing terribly in some cheerleadery busby berkeley production but god forbid you can find that clip anywhere ever because nfl keeps ripping it off youtube.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

A 2007 ad features Shaquille O'Neal dressed as a cop as he rescues Mike the Tiger from a tree (Shaq attended LSU). At the end Shaq asks Mike if he's all right and is handed a vitaminwater for his efforts.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

i think there's a thread about that nfl replay ad somewhere. shockey doesn't dance, is what i remember about it.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i would know some important things if i didn't remember stuff like nfln commercials/which threads exist already. :(

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

haha i like that "important things" are things like, for example, the fact that the commercial starts by warren sapp busting through a wall, kool-aid man style, at a group of bronco fans to yell "YOU SPENT ALL SUNDAY WATCHING GAMES ON THE TUBE????!"

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

then chad johnson ocho cinco sings "but you missed 85 and there's nothing you can do" and then the cheerleaders make ;_; faces and sing the exact same line as chad just did, as if you misunderstood him, somehow.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

guys i need help

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

aw i love that commercial

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

also the cheerleaders are not real cheerleaders, apparently, because they jump + cheer awkwardly.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

i think they are just actresses. i don't think they are even strippers cos none of them were busty/fake-boob-y. they were all awkward dancers and just were there to mug at the camera.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

nobody really distinguishes themselves dancing, it's true, but at least they all try, Shockey!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that guy just sucks, everyone else made a production

" The second commercial airing right now is a heated rock, paper, scissors contest between the Blob and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.
Though the commercial ended up looking great, it came about accidentally.

The Blob was in the process of filming another commercial for ESPN but during the break, Jim Kelly challenged the Blob to an rock, paper, scissors match. It was then the director thought it would look great on TV and videotaped the match.

“It’s tough to have a rock, paper, scissors strategy against a Hall of Famer like Jim Kelly. You really can’t out think him,” said Wimsatt.

The result of the contest was the Blob winning and eating Jim Kelly’s Hall of Fame jacket.

“I was kind of surprised he let me do that to his jacket, since it was his only one,” said Wimsatt."

The best commercial ESPN did was the one where they were doing Y2K testing and everything goes haywire with mascots running for cover and Mark McGuire comes in with a neck tie tied around his head like RAMBO and is using a baseball bat to destroy computers. I think that is one of the funniest commercials ever, not just for ESPN.

Better quality, plus an old Eisen commercial tacked on after it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

wow. i like in the longer y2k commercial, how it shows everyone freaking out, then cuts to (maybe?) john randle, chilling out, eating pudding (or canned fruit?), then cuts back to the mayhem.

the mcgwire bit is awesome. it's as if he's in the throes of some sort of rgae. hmmmm...
