What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

NYJ @ BUF Jets are just plain bad but i don't think the steamroller will be out for this game
DET @ CHI if Chicago didn't turn up the Lions would lose 2-0 with an unfortunate fourth quarter safety
JAC @ CIN Jags weird this season, but not weird enough to commit suicice here
BAL @ CLE i haven't figured Baltimore out but they can keep this low scoring and Browns not enjoying low scoring games this year
TB @ KC this looks like one of those games where KC give a clearly superior teama scare before capitulating easily
HOU @ MIN oooooooh. Houston are the better team for sure but not much of a road team. i guess Vikes is the sensible pick.
ARI @ STL Rams resurgence is a myth - caught 'Skins sleeping, Brad Johnson killed 'Boys, NE game should've been a blow out
GB @ TEN this has potential to be a great game. don't understand exactly why Titans keep winning so difficult to argue against them.
MIA @ DEN i think smart teams will beast Denver and, weird as it is to say, Miami seem like a smart team under the new regime
DAL @ NYG best chance for Cowboys win is Sam Beckett leaping into Brad Johnson between now and the end of the game.
ATL @ OAK tho i can see this going either way
PHI @ SEA this looks closer to an upset game than a vicious beating, but can't rationally go against cheesesteaks here.
PIT @ WAS Roffles doesn't seem to like those NFC East defenses but i dunno. i am going against instinct here yet again.
NE @ IND you beat this Indy team by denying the deep pass. they can't run and their short game can be contained. Titans did a textbook job last time out, holding Peyton to something like 2 from 9 deep throws and letting Clark have the ball whenever he wanted except in the red. the problem for the Pats is that most of those deep incompletions were knock-downs. if NE take the obvious route and play the whole game in nickel and their 3 safety dime they will get burned because Peyton can still throw, he's in the dome, and NE's backs get beaten long as several QBs have shown. their best chance is to blitz the shit out of Manning and hope that that junior O line folds, especially with Seymour returning to monster status and Adalius getting sacks from OLB this season. with steady offense and a couple turnovers Pats will get something like 24 points in this game but i can't talk myself into believing Indy won't get more.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

from the post's skins blog:

We all know that Jason Campbell has added a lot to his game and is having a breakout season. But this week he took it to another level, going public with his Pete Kendall impersonation. Kendall, the gregarious starting guard with a gruff New England accent, would seem like a difficult target for Campbell, with his Mississippi twang, to take on but I've got to say JC pulled it off.

Campbell was mimicking the way Kendall talks in the huddle.

"J, you might want to think about changing that cadence," Campbell mumbled, sounding a little bit like a baritone Jerry Remy. "They're getting a jump on it on this side."

NYJ @ BUF - I'm going with the Bills. I don't get why people are so surprised that the Jets are not great, if they got to .500 that would have been an improvement over last years terrible club and that still seems somewhat possible.
DET @ CHI - I think it is a disappointment if the Bears just don't dismantle the Lions, let alone win.
JAC @ CIN - The Jags might run for 300 yards on the ground today, it is a total mismatch.
BAL @ CLE - This is a hard game to call, I'm going with the Browns but I don't have much confidence in the pick
TB @ KC - Tampa better not lose to KC.
HOU @ MIN - I want to take Houston, but I cannot pick them on the road, so it Vikings it is.
ARI @ STL - I'm going with the Cards, but they usually cannot win on the road.
GB @ TEN - This is a good match up. I figure Green Bay is a bit better than their record and Tennessee a bit worse than theirs. I'll take the Pack.
MIA @ DEN - I'll go Denver at home, but Miami is an interesting team and I could see them winning.
DAL @ NYG - Giants.
ATL @ OAK - This is a game Atlanta needs to win.
PHI @ SEA - Philly is getting healthy and SHOULD walk, but they seem to lose these kind of games in the past couple of years.
NE @ IND - I'm going Colts, but I don't feel good about it.
PIT @ WAS - This should be a good game. I'm going to take Washington, as I have a feeling that one of these games all of those hits that Big Ben is taking is going to catch up with him.

T-PALIN (daria-g), Monday, 3 November 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

super disappointing that the Pats didn't lose that game because of any problems in the secondary, which for some reason Indy didn't test that much deep, but because Belichick had one of those games where he seems to lose his head late in a close game. i'd say if they played that game 10 times with the same play calling from the Colts, NE win 8 or 9 times and Dungy looks foolishly over-cautious. Cassel played fine but i'm concerned about the return of early season inability to get TDs from red zone ball. hopefully just a blip.

men in denim build this country (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 3 November 2008 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

a big fat game full of who gives a shit

Every Day Jimmy Mod Is Hustlin' (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 3 November 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

Cinci did play with some zing today with some improvement on both sides of the ball, but J-ville's game plan was really screwy. The Jags never really seemed that committed to trying to run the ball, which considering the Bengals problems stopping the run, is really weird. That seems to be Jacksonville's problem, they will play up with the good teams and then have let downs on clubs they should clobber. Cedric Benson looked pretty good for the Bengals today. It could have been a walk if Fitzgerald would have hit on one of the deep bombs, he had three chances with people way open and missed on all three.

son of a BITCH~@

omar little, Monday, 3 November 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

ohno, sorry Bears!

cosign re: Belichick, I thought this one was on him, more than anyone. Cassel did fine. if that stupid personal foul hadn't moved them out of field goal range the one time.. and I think another where they went for it on 4th and 15 into Indy territory, late in the game.. why not let Gostkowski take a shot. game plan seemed hyper conservative, was it true that Indy's secondary is pretty well decimated & if so why weren't they throwing it to Moss more? even Welker? and Gaffney should NOT have dropped that TD.

T-PALIN (daria-g), Monday, 3 November 2008 06:34 (seventeen years ago)

Gaffney drop was pretty lame, it really did fall into his arms perfectly and he just let it slide through. with all of the scrutiny Cassel and his numbers are under, the receivers need to give him a break and catch some passes. that's 3 TD drops on two games from the 3 senior WRs. i wasn't too mad about the Thomas personal foul. he was making a block and hadn't realized the play was over. probably pretty easy to do in a noisy dome, especially for a younger player.

men in denim build this country (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 3 November 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

Wuz hammered last night watching Green Bay - Tennessee. That game was dope.

Nothing has transpired (Noodle Vague), Monday, 3 November 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, Cassel looked good to me! also madden quoted him as saying that he doesn't understand why people are always telling him playing qb in the NFL is all about having fun because he does not find it fun at all, so now i kind of love him. still, fuck the Pats etc.

horseshoe, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

also, that sucks about Orton, omar.

horseshoe, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

^yeah that was great re: cassel. who will start the matt cassel is not having fun thread?

johnny crunch, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

the best QBs are the ones that are able to have fun, and the reason they are able to have fun doing an incredibly difficult job under intense scrutiny and pressure is because parts of their brains are missing or do not work properly. everything about Cassel screams "i am just some regular dude". even if i wasn't a Pats fan i would want this guy to succeed. although i would be glad for the Pats to retain him at the end of the season, as long as Brady gets fit he will go somewhere else and get more than minimum salary. if the fates conspire to put Cassel, Beast Mode and Jim Zorn on the same team, i would have to switch allegiance.

I am currently out of the office (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah cassel does seem like a totally regular guy and has dealt incredibly well with being asked condescendingly 'so are you learning and making progress?' & 'what would tom brady do?' like 10000 times a week. i am pretty impressed, especially given that the boston media is obnoxious, belichick is satan, and all of new england wanted to throw him out on his ass after that san diego game. (eg just get daunte culpepper and have him chuck it to randy moss on every play!) i dunno if belichick doesn't completely have confidence in him yet that they're not throwing deep passes, or if this is all part of some evil master plan.

T-PALIN (daria-g), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

At this point I think Cassel would be a better choice at QB for like half of the teams in the league.

polyphonic, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

they have given Cassel more deep options as the season has progressed. last night was different because Indy played 2 deep safeties all game long, and you aren't going to help a QB develop by encouraging him to throw into coverage. the game plan was right, but in such a tight game, all it took were a couple of errors and some coaching madness to mangle it.

against Buffalo it will be more of the same. the teams that have beaten the Bills this season have used a lot of short passes - have basically played the way the Pats have been most comfortable. they won't play as deep at Indy did, but they have a good secondary that NE don't have to roll the dice against to compete.

I am currently out of the office (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

re: coaching madness. i was pretty stunned what with throwing the challenge flag over 12 men on the field? also, i didn't see it incredibly closely but when they used the last timeout on 4th and 1 when they'd lined up to go for it, then decided to send on gostkowski.. did the players not hear the whistle blow & the play went off & would've resulted in a first down? that's what i saw, but again, don't know if they heard the whistle or not. thinking back to other bouts of madness though I'm still wondering why they punted inside the NYG 35 yard line in the super bowl (it was close to the 30, wasn't it??)

T-PALIN (daria-g), Monday, 3 November 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

I feel bad for DA, the fans have been merciless in their treatment of him. Still he's one of the lowest rated QB's in the league right now and the offense has yet to show any consistency so I think this was the right move.

also, tony kornheiser. the point of playing football games is, in fact, to win football games. it is not to impress sportswriters.

[fixed]I feel bad for "Cleveland QB", the fans have been merciless in their treatment of him. [/fixed]

yeah, wow. in a sense, there's no shame in being stuffed by the number one defense in the league, but, man did they come out flat in the second half and the skins looked ferocious in the first. i'll also say that how could they have even prepared for leftwich? he hasn't really been healthy for years...he looked a lot better than roethlisberger, i thought.

...but, then, when a quarterback decides to actually throw the ball instead of holding on to it forever, it does tend to make the offense run more efficiently.

couple plays really killed them.
WHY must rogers keep dropping the easy INT + 6!?
did i see campbell doing that thing of locking onto one guy again? of course, w the pass rush in his face constantly.. glad he didn't get hurt at least. santana moss was still hurt AFAIK

Leftwich is a DC native actually & after the game was like "man I love the Redskins, I don't ever want to see the Redskins lose but today.. uh.."

actually just listening to leftwich postgame cracked me up because his accent is SO total dc-murrland & I'm not really used to hearing that from anyone on our team

rogers not catching that ball and taking it for six was huge. i mean, his path was clear as day. it was nice to se cornelius griffin get a pickle.

bye will be good for springs, betts, samuels...
