Probably a short list

i love ed as much as any other football player ever but i never got the feeling that he was as dominating as everyone says - i mean ppl talked about bob sanders more than him. ed gets a bunch of TDs but is he a consistent all-around great safety? i dont really watch enough ravens games to get a good feel

Sanders is great, especially when you consider how pathetic the Colts defense is without him. Reed is always around the ball, plus he is a phenomenal blitzer. I give Sanders the edge against the run.

I have no real dog in this fight, but safety is a tough position to evaluate, because most of their work is done off-screen. Who are the best of all time, and how do they compare to Reed (and Sanders)? There are some good active guys, like Dawkins and Polamalu.

Right now is probably the golden age of the safety with those four guys playing.

Lott was unquestionably awesome, I think he spent half of his career as a corner though.

joey browner? denis smith and steve atwater? deron cherry? these are guys i remember, in addition to ronnie lott, as being considered great safeties when i was growing up. i feel like there's a cyclical nature to guys being deemned "the next great safety." seems like for years it was brian dawkins. i also wouldn't say that being a ballhawk or good blitzer necessarily makes one a great safety.

guys forgot about Sehorn already

bnw, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

brian dawkins, most versatile safety who ever lived

cankles, Monday, 15 December 2008 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

sehorn was only a safety for a little bit, though, right? he started out as a corner, for sure.

Rod Woodson was another CB who wound up being an excellent safety in his later years.

i just like to mention sehorn whenever possible since he is to your secondary as sweatpants are to your wardrobe.

"joey browner? denis smith and steve atwater? deron cherry?"

I don't think any of these guys is in the HOF. I remember Browner being a fantastic player.

adrian wilson is another pimpin, versatile ass player

Then again, they've got Antonio Cromartie as the 2nd-best CB in all of football, so obviously they don't know shit.

God, these rankings are fucking stupid.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 15 December 2008 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

I think those safety ratings are decent.

I think those safety ratings are decent.

Yeah, I mostly meant some of the other rankings in that feature.

a lot of them read like they were listed by madden rating.

Al Harris on the CB's ruins the credibility of the whole project.

Bill Magill, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

Ronnie Lott was a better safety than hedge fund manager:

Good lord, does time move quickly in the NFL. Just looked at those rankings, Roy Williams got a vote? Has anybody seen Bob Sanders lately other than on a milk carton? KERRY RHODES?????????
